Last week got off to a slow start. For starters, Cameron shot his thumb with a nail gun and John Voight took almost an entire day to install the cook-top in the kitchen. We also discovered that after installing the cabinet above the refrigerator, it was the wrong size {again!}. Luckily, we figured it out before any crown molding went up.
And then I came to conclusion the laundry counters were too high and decided to have Cameron lower the side ones down about 3 inches. The original plan was to install a folding counter-top over the washer and dryer and have it continue all the way around laundry room counter-tops and sink.
All the guys of course {including the HH} thought the counter height was just fine, but then I asked them who uses the laundry in their house and they were like… Oh, maybe they are too high. 😉
Cameron also started on the new pantry shelves {they’ll be finished tomorrow, I think} and worked on trimming out the bottom of the kitchen cabinets as well.
He also installed the new mantel. What do you think? Pretty freakin’ awesome if you ask me.
Cameron is actually Girly Girl and Chino the Handyman’s Brother-in Law. Which is great, because when Chino and I argue or start negotiating things like installing kitchen crown molding in exchange for me choosing a cheaper laundry room tile, it’s like a total big dysfunctional family argument. And Cameron fits right in {mostly because he’s quite and doesn’t react to drama. Which leads me to believe he probably grew up with a house full of sisters}. It’s the perfect combination of quick decision making, bottom lines, and trust at it’s best.
I’m think I might miss the chaos when they’re finally finished.
What do you think? Mario the tile guy had to let the tile set before adding the final layer.
He’ll be back later this week to finish the fireplace tile.
Mario will also grout the kitchen back-splash, lay the laundry room tile, the laundry room counter-top and The Girl’s bathroom tile too. He is total character… you’d like him.
Oh, and here’s something kind of funny. See that piece of trim above the kitchen window? {There are actually 3 more pieces of it in my new kitchen.} The stained wood was leftover from a house Chino built 9 years ago and it just happened to match the style of trim we are using for the remodel.
Guess who’s house it was “leftover” from?
Mr. and Mrs. Hillbilly’s House!!!! How funny is that?
I hope Mrs. HB doesn’t want it back. 😉

Are you using the same tile above the mantle? I notice it is unpainted. It is really beautiful. Envy you your trusted handymen! Do they travel?
Mavis Butterfield says
No tile above the mantel. Drywall guy has to come back and repair the seam at the top of the wall so Chino told me to wait on painting that area.

Where is the microwave going? Good luck w/the 20 year old part. I had one stinking part go out on my 6 year old stove. And that part is no longer made. After an extensive search for the part, I had to buy a whole new stove. I was not happy.
Mavis Butterfield says
It’s above the oven.

Dang! I can’t help thinking your kitchen is the same size as ours and your remodel is helping me to visualize our current redesign issues with our space before a total gut job. Scary process!! What are the dimensions of your kitchen?

Looks great! Can’t wait to see the pictures when it’s all done!

It is all looking so good, Mavis! Did you find your part, then? All I know is most appliances have their parts list online now. Hopefully you will be able to get the part and move on down the happy road.
Mavis Butterfield says
Not yet, hoping to get to it later today.

Love your new mantel!! Just the right size and shape for the space, and far enough from the fire to be really decorated!
Sharon says
Ouch, Cameron!!!!
Looking good. You need to cook them all dinner when it’s all done!

Pretty interesting….I’ve never seen a (casement?) window behind a cooktop like that. Looks like you get to throw open the window to vent! View from the sink and a view from the cooktop -nicely done Mavis!
Mavis Butterfield says
I LOVE that window… it will work better than any fan I tell ya! There is a pop up vent behind the cook top though.
