Mississippi Pot Roast. Pretty much the easiest and tastiest way to cook a pot roast on the planet.
And the leftovers make a delicious Shepard’s pie the next day.
Cucumbers and tomatoes… are you swimming in them? My favorite way to use them up these days has been to chop them up and pour a little Ken’s Steak House lite Caesar dressing over them.
Garden fresh green beans sauted in a little olive oil with a few cashews thrown in at the last minute.
Beans and weenies with cherry cola jello salad and macaroni salad from ALDI.
Fresh corn and John Boy peaches from the local fruit stand.
Tuna casserole. I used a can of cream of chicken instead of cream of celery soup. I don’t know about you, but I love meals that provide leftovers for lunch the next day.
The best meatballs I’ve ever had. Date day at the local Italian take out place. We went for lunch and skipped dinner because we were so full. 😉 I think I’m going to order a pan of their chicken Parmesan when Mrs. HB comes to visit me this weekend.
Local Produce Stand: $15.31 {HOLY COW MAN!} 🙂
Corn was $0.75 an ear and peaches and nectarines were $2.29 a pound. Someone mentioned they paid $0.10 an ear for corn in Texas. Talk about a price difference.
What are you paying for peaches and corn these days? Has anyone found a crazy fantastic deal? If so, I’d love to hear about it.

I think the cheapest I’ve gotten corn here (in Central Texas) is 6/$1. That was at my favorite grocery store, HEB 🙂

Good morning Mavis- meals look delish! We can get corn and fruit for free because my Dad has orchards about 30 minutes from where I live. I’m not really into putting up fruits and veggies these days so I don’t want 50 ears of corn or a box of plums or peaches because we are a family of 3 these days and much of it would go to waste. I have purchased 3 local watermelons in the last week- one at a time and as soon as one is gone, we get another one- my daughter and I can finish off a watermelon in about a day.
I made your corn and black bean salad and your pinto beans (added some chorizo and a tomato and spices) for a family taco bar party this weekend- everything was a huge hit but the beans were especially loved!
Cheryl says
I only buy my corn local and pay $2.00-$3.00 for six. Corn needs to be eaten the same day it is picked not after the long trip to the grocery store. We only eat corn in season.
Sabrina says
Peaches are on sale at Safeway in Western Wa for .99 per pound
Alice says
Thanks

I bought corn last week 3.00 a dozen from a roadside stand. I know a farmer around here that grows sweet corn and his kids sell it in the summer all through high school and college to pay for college. 3-4 dollars a dozen is the going price around here in SW Wisconsin.
Sheri says
Pretty much the same price here in south central PA at roadside stands, in a grocery store maybe a tad more but its still local
Leslie says
I usually buy corn in-season for 25¢/ear. Seems interesting how much it varies from place to place.
Alice says
Mavis, the picture of your beef pot pie looks more like what I call shepherd’s pie…with mashed potatoes on the top.
My 4 year old granddaughter told her mother that she wanted a “real pie”. Not shepherd’s pie or pot pie. LOL
Do you have a recipe for chicken pot pie?
Thanks. We miss you here in the PNW, but I know you are happier where you are.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yep, Shepard’s pie is what I meant to say. 🙂
Karen says
In Southern New Jersey we usually pay 50 cents an ear for corn,
peaches go for about $1.99 a pound if not on sale
Higher prices at our farm stands
Arlene says
Hi Mavis, Love your blog! I’m in NJ and I paid $1.49 per lb. for peaches just a few days ago. They were on sale. Corn varies from store to store. The highest price so far that I saw was 3 for $1.99 which seems expensive being I paid 5 for $1 a couple of weeks ago. I don’t know why the prices should vary so much. I don’t buy a lot of corn at a time because I like it the day I buy it and not after it sits in the fridge for days. Farm stands around here are much more expensive than the supermarkets but the produce is so much fresher that it’s worth spending the extra money IMO.
Helen in Meridian says
I bought lovely giant peaches from Symms Ranch at Albertsons for $1.29#. They are just like we bought by the bushel at Symms Ranch when I was little and we canned them. This week they are .99# for Symms peaches at Albertsons. Our store is trying to buy as much local as possible. When the new Albertsons on Broadway opened they had corn for .10 and bought the whole field from the local farmer that week. I let my peaches rest for a week until really like. I like my peaches and cream, peach shakes, and fresh peaches on oatmeal almost rottingly ripe. Corn is about .50 at most of our stores

I use Ken’s light caesar dressing/marinade to marinade chicken before bbq’ing. My family LOVES it. They think I’m a master cook. Ha Ha Ha I’m guessing veggies skewers would be yummy marinaded as well.
Laura says
Will have to try this Heidi–thanks for the idea!!

Our local farmers market corn prices = 4 doz/$20. I purchased organic, which was $8/doz. Our Rotarty club sells peaches by the lug this time of year for $17. Excellent peaches! LynneinWI

My Sprouts in Georgia has peaches for $.77 a pound. They have fantastic produce, and great sale prices!
Pam from Issaquah says
Hi Mavis.. @ Foley’s Produce here in Maple Valley, Wa. they’re selling Organic Peaches for $2.99 # and organic corn 5/$2.00…so my guess is if it’s grown organically and Non-GMO, it’s going to cost more….
Alice says
I love Foley’s.
Tracy Fluri says
Our local corn is 15 cents a cob, and our peaches are 2.97 for a 3 litre basket. I’m in the Niagara region in Ontario, Canada.

I purchased a bushel of absolutely beautiful Pennsylvania peaches for 24.50 along with my Amish friends. Corn at my local Amish vegetable stand is $3.50 a dozen or $.30 an ear.
Libby says
Farm stands in CT are selling corn for 50 cents a ear. We only buy local corn picked that day – never grocery store corn. The sugar levels change rapidly after picking, plus there is less pesticide on local corn.
Local peaches in a bushel “utility” peaches i.e., not perfect are $17.
Laura says
Here in San Diego I bought corn 6 for $1.00 and peaches are on sale this week for 3 lbs. for $1.00. Our gas is high but produce is priced pretty well.
Lauren says
I can’t wait for stone fruits again, my nectarine tree has its first few blossoms and the almond tree’s are in full blossoms my back yard looks like it has been snowing (which is never going to happen where we are Adelaide, South Australia) – looking forward to spring now.
E in Upstate NY says
This weekend bought 6 ears for $2.50. Could have purchased a baker’s dozen for $5. Refrig space is why went small number. I LOVE fresh corn on the cob. Could just make a meal out of it.
Peaches at the same place were $.99 a # and $1.50 a # for white flesh peaches. It’s too cold here to grow peaches, so the farmers get theirs’s from PA.
Can’t can this year, so didn’t even ask them their bulk prices. [I know, frustrating but that’s life right now.]
Molly Jo says
Got a deal today on peaches 12 for $2 and the corn was $3.50 for bakers dozen at our farmers market.
Pam Kaufman says
Here in S.W. Michigan I paid .99 cents a pound for peaches and $6.00/dozen ( .50 cents a piece) for corn on the cobb.
Linda says
Same with Sprouts in Tampa. corn prices vary from 5/$1.00 to .50 a piece.
Beth says
There is a big difference in flavor in northern corn vs southern corn- not sure why that is. I really think that may be the big difference in prices but it could just be availability of it too.
Emily Decker says
I’m in Chester County, PA (average-priced state, but expensive county). A typical price for corn right now is 6 for $2 from Produce Junction. The local farms are selling for $4/dozen. Stores like Giant, Acme, and Wegmans are doing 5 for $2 or 10 for $5. The best deal was two weekends ago, Giant, of all places (tends to be the most expensive store in my area), had a special for 8 for $1! It was local too! Amazing! The next weekend they had local peaches for $0.50/lb. Amazing again. Typically, I pay $1/lb at Produce Junction. Giant, Acme, Wegmans usually has them for $1.50-$2/lb
C says
50 cents an ear of corn, and 69 cents/lb for local peaches here in NC

I bought peaches for $0.69/pound, on sale at Sprouts, in northern Nevada this weekend. I heard that a neighbor is allowing people to pick peaches for free so I might see if she has any left. I wonder if she would like a zucchini (we are picking at least one a day).
