Here’s a look at the meals and purchases from this past week.
The plan was to stay away from the grocery store until closer to the end of the month, but we went through all the fresh fruit and vegetables from our Trader Joe’s stock up trip at the beginning of the month, so I had the HH grab a few more.
First stop was Market Basket where he spent $14.14. The Brussel sprouts were no deal at $2.99 a pound but the celery was only $1.69 and the selection {and QUALITY!} is so much better than Hannaford or Walmart so it all works out in the end.
Trader Joe’s $15.26
Thanks to a hot tip from reader Laura, I also had him grab some more of Trader Joe’s chimichurri rice and a few cartons of their roasted pepper soup. I’ll share the AWESOME recipe tomorrow because trust me, you’ll want to make it!!
The cheddar jalapeno wasn’t on my list but apparently he thought he needed it so that made its way into the cart as well. 😉
Last week we were really busy and ate a lot of quick meals like pickety bits and avocado toast for linner.
Cheese and crackers {and a little dried fruit} I think I could pretty much live off of it.
The HH and I decided we aren’t huge fans of Trader Joe’s breaded chicken. So I won’t be buying it anymore. Once you’ve had Ritz Cracker chicken, everything else is just a big disappointment.
Trader Joe’s lasagna is a winner though.
I served some 8 can chicken taco soup {from the freezer section at Casa De Butterfield and we also met up with Kiln Guy and The Chef for lunch at a Thai restaurant. Which was a big mistake in my opinion.
Three of us ordered the chicken pad Thai {which I thought was a safe bet} and I had one bite and said ummm NO. I’m not going to eat this. It was very stinky, and fishy tasting, and had a weird uncooked egg texture to it. I couldn’t handle it.
The HH kinda sort liked his chicken pad Thai, and Kiln Guy {who will pretty much eat anything} said it was okay. Different, but okay.
So basically we picked another dud. Grrrr.
We seem to be batting 50/50 when we go out t lunch with The Kiln Guy and The Chef. Our next lunch date will be at their place though… So I know it will be a winner.
I think I’ll just stick to cheese, crackers and fruit in the interim.
So how did YOU do last week? Did you find any deals at the stores? Make anything new? Curious minds want to know.
Have a good one,
~Mavis

I am a fan of Pad Thai and eat it often. The one you ordered doesn’t even look right. It looks to be lacking a proper sauce, green onions, and other colorful toppings. I have had a few bad ones, but mostly because they put too much heat in it to where it is barely palatable or the noodles are incorrectly cooked or the meat tastes old or like oil. I like it loaded with veggies. I have never had it with that much egg either.

I was thinking the same time! A well-made Pad Thai is PHENOMENAL! That image is not one I’d be willing to eat.

At this point we are just wondering how we are going to eat all the leftover appetizers from yesterday. I can tell you there will not be any cooking done in this house for the rest of the week!

I bought a 10 lb bag of frozen chicken wings at Sam’s for $20.98 – I thought it was a good deal. (The wings were all grouped together in one package.) The wings were cut into 2 pieces each which is what I like. I found some surprises: some wing tips (which would have added to the weight), some feathers still attached and a couple of odd-looking pieces. I divided them up into 6 groups (there were 64 wings) and I put a different marinade on each group. I baked them and then froze them – except for one group which I held out for dinner. They tasted good but I am not sure I will take advantage of this deal again. I prefer the way the Costco wings look and are packaged. (It was probably a good deal for Super Bowl food.)

I made Mississippi Pot Roast for the first time and my husband is raving about it. It will be made again and often I think.

So glad you liked it!!

I made the Mississippi Pot Roast for my Dad. He went bonkers over it.

We didn’t care for TJs front lasagna. The cheese was rubbery and so little flavor in the meat sauce. I was sad about it. I really wanted to like it enough to add it to my freezer on a regular basis.
So far, my favorite TJ frozen item is the Pork Gyozo(pot stickers). And I do enjoy their frozen Mac ‘n Cheese on occasion. Their ginger thin crispy cookies are really good too
Every once in a while I come across a list online that shares people’s favorites from TJ. I give a few of those a try when the budget allows.

I spent $11.58 on a large bottle of honey this week, and that was it. Brocolli Cheddar soup was my friend this last weekend, along with hot toddies, my fuzzy pajamas, and pants. Because one parent decided to send their child to school while he was sick, my entire classroom is now infected, even though I wiped things down with lysol constantly.
Tonight, it’s chicken satay, the rest of the week will depend on how I feel.
Hope you have a good week.

Our toddler has issues eating enough solid food, so his occupational therapist recommended we do 3 food groups and 3 textures for 3 meals and 3 snacks each day. But, I have to prep most of that in advance for his nanny to feed him, and I’m not supposed to repeat foods within the span of two days. So, I’m going more than a little bit crazy sorting all that out while simultaneously working around his food allergies and keeping other allergens in rotation.

You are such a good mom Mel.

Wow! That’s a lot of work I’m sure but I agree with Judi Y. What a great momma for your sweet toddler!0

Mel,
Keep up the great work you are doing for your dear son! You are doing an extraordinary job and you’re such a kind, caring Mom. You can do it! Hugs!
Mel says
Thanks, Judi, Amanda, and J! I don’t know how good a mom I really am in this area since I’m now counting chocolate pudding as a puree, but we’re making it work!

Your pickety bits always look so good!!!! And I like that they are always different. Never gets boring.
Susie says
Sounds like someone poured too much fish sauce in your pad thai. That makes me sad because I LOVE pad thai.

We love Trader Joe’s Penna Arrabbiata. I add cooked italian sausage or beef to it because my husband runs/works out and needs the protein.
