Yesterday, I drove to Portland and took the radioactive iodine pill. The pill was the size of an ordinary Tylenol capsule and was stored in a glass tube inside a heavy lead {?} container. The whole thing was pretty uneventful.
And since coming home from the hospital yesterday I’ve been locked up in the craft room all by myself and will be here until Saturday morning. That’s when I get to break out of this joint and eat REAL food again. I am SO OVER this whole thing.
That low iodine diet, is not for wimps let me tell you. I think I’ve lost like 5 pounds in the past two weeks. It’s crazy!
The food here in captivity is pretty good though. All I do is text the HH what I want and at what time and it gets delivered on a little cart that the HH places outside of my room. Then comes a little knock on the door and by the time I get to the door he’s gone and it’s sort of like room service only I don’t have to leave a tip and there’s no cheesy carnation on my tray.
Things I did yesterday in captivity:
- Strung 124 ornaments
- Tied up 10 bundles of wool and listed them on Etsy
- Read two magazines
- Wasted time on the internet
- Watched 3 episodes of Escape to the Country on YouTube
I don’t think I was all that productive, so today I’m going to try and get a little more done.
24 hours hours to go! And then tomorrow when I wake up I get to eat a slice of chocolate cake and have milk in my tea. 🙂
Life is good.
Wishing you the best of weekends,
~Mavis

Sending prayers. You’ve got this…
Lisa says
I LOVE watching escape to the country! It’s so interesting to see homes in other countries. Well, you didn’t fall down a rabbit hole, and you were productive! The garden will feel nice under your feet when you get there, yes?
Karen says
You’ve got this, Mavis! Sending prayers your way!
Nancy says
You will enjoy that cake in the morning! Sounds like room service is pretty good at your house. I’m not so sure I’d be as lucky.
Christie says
So close!!! What a gem that HH is! 🙂
Julie says
My cat had the same procedure done. But she was locked in a tiny little cage for 4 DAYS! The door to the room with cages had a whiteboard with notes about the pets. Her note was, “Watch out – she’s a darter!” .
Amy says
Are you sleeping in the craft room?
Hang in there! Won’t be much longer!
Mavis Butterfield says
Yep. Doing time in the craft room.
Michele says
Sending healing vibes. You got this!

Hi Mavis
So glad u r almost done. Enjoy the chocolate cake.
I did not think anyone else watched Escape to the Country. It has been my guilty pleasure over the last year. We get 3 episodes every day on one of our random channels. Love it and makes me want to buy one of those homes.
Gayle Taylor says
Escape to the Chateau and escape to the Chateau DIY are interesting, too.
Nancy says
Yes! We love both of those
Joely says
Mavis you are strong, resilient, determined and amazingly creative. If anyone can do this it is you! Your sense of humor has remained gloriously intact through all of this madness.
Diana says
You have such a positive attitude! Time will fly by while you are having fun with your crafts. Enjoy your cake!
Mary G says
Best wishes with everything! I love your description of the HH delivering your meals. That’s so sweet–the image made me smile. He’s most definitely a keeper! 🙂
J in OH-IO says
Mavis, you are amazing! You accomplish a lot and you’re doing great! Love your positive attitude and sense of humor! Rooting for you and cheering you on! You go, girl!
Jeanine says
I bet Lucy is confused.
Is she scratching or whining at your door?
Just a few more hours to go and you can “break out”!
Cheryl says
Just remember without your health there is no chocolate cake. You can do this.
KC says
I’m not locked in a craft room for 48 hours, but I kind of needed a laugh today, and I laughed out loud at this – thank you, Cheryl, for this grounded and chocolatey reason to stay alive. 🙂
MEM says
You are almost there! I have a question related to your Etsy photo – I believe I see whales’ tails ornaments? Will there be a whales’ tails garland, perhaps? I would be interested in that. Sending you warmest Get Well wishes (we have snow in the Boston ‘burbs)
Mavis Butterfield says
Yep. I just listed the whale tails, and garlands will be coming soon. 🙂
Sandy says
Mavis,
You may enjoy The Positano Diaries on You Tube. Nicki and Carlo live in Italy and they grow their own food. I pretty much want to sell everything and go live there. It’s nice to watch!
You got this! Enjoy that cake!
Nancy says
We watch that too! So much walking but so interesting!
Kim says
This has got to be a very weird experience. As we say in the south, bless your heart.
So excited that you will be released from prison tomorrow.
I think all of your readers should eat something deliciously chocolate tomorrow in honor of you finishing up your sentence! Yeah for great husbands.
Patti Vanderbloemen says
You have been in my prayers! You and your husband are both blessed to have each other! Enjoy your cake!!,
Margo says
Heck of a way to lose 5 lbs!
Marcia says
Why are you locked in the craft room? Are you radioactive? I might have to google. I assume you are allowed to use the bathroom?
Marcia says
Apparently, yes, you are radioactive. Huh.
Diane says
I always thought anything that was radioactive lasted last much, much longer. That’s why they worry so much about radioactive contamination. I was kind of surprised that it only lasts two days but I’m glad that’s the case!
Mavis Butterfield says
The craft room has a bathroom. And an electric tea kettle. 🙂
Carolina Cooper says
Good to know. I had been wondering if you were allowed out to use the cute, newly renovated “guest bathroom.” Is that chocolate cake going to be homemade by the HH?
tia in boise says
thanks for asking (and “researching”)! i was curious too!
Chyrl says
To show my support for you, I’ll eat a piece of cake tomorrow! Life is good! I need to check out Escape to the Country. I love watching Escape to the Chateau.
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks for taking one for the team! 🙂
Dianne says
Enjoy that cake! Will HH be making the cake for you?
Kippy says
It must have taken a tremendous amount of planning to make sure you had everything you needed/wanted in the craft room before your confinement. I bet that chocolate cake slice tomorrow morning will be the best tasting chocolate cake you have ever had! Yeah Mavis
Pam says
I love watching Out in the Country but I wish there was more closure. Did they buy a house or not? I need to know lol! I have to say being stuck in a room by myself for a few days sounds kind of nice. But being in there because I had to swallow a radioactive pill not so much. Hope all goes well. Enjoy your cake, you definitely deserve it.
Kristen says
Mav! Saw your garden markers featured on McGee and Co website. Wow, gf! You go, lady!
Mavis Butterfield says
Very exciting! Thanks for letting me know. We couldn’t figure out where all the orders were coming from. 🙂
Kari says
I pre-funked and ate some chocolate cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes for you tonight. Well, maybe I also celebrated my brother’s 50th a little, too. Either way, thinking of you in your last night of captivity. Wishing you good health and a joyous day tomorrow.
Carolyn says
I am impressed by your stamina. When I took the nasty radioactive iodine pill I was drained. Took more naps in 5 days than I had in 5 years. Hang in there.
Ellen Marshall says
Love your positive outlook on life- makes me smile. Cake- life’s pleasure food.
LaToya says
Oh, Miss Mavis – sorry I’m late to the party on this one …. been having my own little health battles over here. I was so hoping that you wouldn’t have to do this. But hopefully this will be your one-and-done for the I-131.
I had to do it several times for several years. When my lads were toddlers — I remember being quarantined in the bedroom and them pounding on the door for mama to come out. I treated myself with popcorn and dark chocolate (BLECH) and they had me doing a lot of hard sour candies to keep the salivary glands from deadening or whatever because the treatment can kill salivary glands. I have since become hypersensitive to spicy foods – i.e. the mashed potatoes that I used to love at Goodwood are now too spicy for me.
Cheers to this being in the rearview mirror for you!
