Last March, when my friend Heather and I were making our way up to Bar Harbor, one of the places we stopped at along the way was Milling Around in Newcastle, Maine. But they were closed. 🙁
So last week when the HH and I were in the area buying bread at Head Tide Oven, I made sure we stopped by Milling Around and hooray, they were open!
Old wooden soda crates… when was the last time you saw one of those?
Milling Around in Newcastle, Maine is partly an antique store and partly a store that sells old wooden bobbins… or old wooden bobbins that have been made into new things. And it’s super cool.
A stainless steel suitcase! I had no idea they made suitcases out of stainless steel back in the day. I wonder how much they went for back then… nowadays they run $125 {with a key!}.
Bobbin candle lamps…
And lamps made from old Brownie cameras and other found objects.
Hey! I think we had that blender when I was a kid. And now it’s a lamp. How crazy is that?
The worlds largest shoe last. Just in case you were wondering, Milling Around in Newcastle, Maine has it.
Vintage duck decoys. Now there is something I can use!
And this old laundry hamper on wheels… I told the HH I needed one and he said it wouldn’t fit in the car. Seriously, where have I heard that one before? Hopefully they’ll still have one when I go back next time because I think it would look super cool all cleaned up with a couple of bolts of wool in it.
But you know… somebody probably died in it so I’ll have to scrub it down real good.
Husbands. They were made to make us crazy.
But anyway, if you love antiques and you ever make it Maine, check out Milling Around in Newcastle, Maine. It’s pretty rad.
Have a good one,
~Mavis

Oh my gosh, I had the same blender in the same color, and replaced it only about 3 years ago! And figures, the price on the “antique” was a lot more than we paid for it new!
Anne says
I still do have mine! It works just fine! I believe it was the only color it came in.
Dianne says
I had the same blender as well. Shower gift in 1980! Great blender!
Diane says
I still have mine! Things were built to last back in the old days!

In one of your pictures I see a metal dollhouse which I had as a kid. New it was around $5.00 When you are wandering around these antique shops there is a very rare 1962 Marx Metal Dollhouse with a fallout bomb shelter. I was told by a dealer that this is worth thousands today.

Wow! Thanks for the tip.

Hi there
The laundry hampers are also USPS Postal hampers, used for parcels and -till this day-to load all mail to carry out to the vehicles. Each carrier has a hamper, loads it up with circulars ( grocery store ads etc), trays of routed letters, all parcels and flats ( magazines), it gets pushed out to the postal vehicle and loaded.
Heads up talented Mavis peeps.
I am on the look out for a vintage folding wooden canvas camping stool. Or two. Any condition. I need it to complete my camp theme backyard cottage/camp. Thanks team!

I’ll keep my eye out for your Sandy. 🙂

I STILL have that blender, and it still works perfectly! My husband got it (used!) from his parents when he moved away from home after high school, and brought it with him when we married, 32 years ago. We called it his trousseau
They dont make them like they used to…and by using that phrase, I have just confirmed to myself that I’m an old lady

Love the look of the Canadian geese decoys, but they can sure make pests of themselves. When we lived at the beach they were on our deck all the time, leaving poo everywhere!
Linda says
I love antiquing! Thanks for taking us along! I hope you got to bring home a decoy!

My best friend has one of the metal doll houses. I can’t wait to ask her if it has a bomb shelter!! And yes, thanks for taking us on your antiquing trip!!

The metal suitcase was used by students and military personnel to mail their dirty laundry home to mom, who would wash it and mail it back.
