Last week on our way to the Portland Art Museum, the neighbors ladies and I stopped at the Miss Portland Diner for brunch before taking in the Art in Bloom exhibit. The eggs Benedict I had for brunch there was so good, I told the HH we needed to go there for date day this week, and well yesterday, we did.
The Miss Portland Dining Car has been around since 1949, serving up breakfast and lunch around the downtown Portland, Maine area {in 2 different locations over the years} and clearly it’s a local favorite. Both times I was there {once at noon, and the other at 9 am, both on a weekday} the place was at about 80% capacity.
My neighbor said forget about going on the weekends, because the place is always packed. And I believe her!
Take a look at those bar stools! I was able to snap this picture just as three older gentlemen walked in and took the seats. 🙂
We lucked out when we got there because there was one booth left, and I’ll admit, I was totally giddy!
Little jammy packs! As we waited for our breakfast we guessed which packets were the most desirable. We decided the strawberry, followed by orange marmalade, then grape then apple jelly were the most popular.
I ordered the eggs Benedict {again} and the HH ordered the western omelette. Both came with the best home fries on the planet.
I don’t know about you, but when I go to a restaurant and try something and really like it, that’s it. It’s the only thing I will ever order from the place for all eternity. I don’t know why, but I just can’t deviate.
LOOK AT THAT EGG! Both times it came out PERFECTLY. Just as a poached egg should. Isn’t it beautiful? Fluffy egg on the outside, gooey on the inside. Man oh man! You need to try this place!
The Miss Portland Diner in Portland, Maine. Another winner! If you ever find yourself in the area, do stop. The place is a true throwback to simple good old fashioned food.
Also, here’s a cool link about the Worcester Lunch Car and Carriage Manufacturing Company {the company that made the diner car}. 651 diners were made between 1906 and 1957 and it has a list of the ones still around operating as diners. Cool Beans!
Have a great day everyone,

We ate there when we were vacationing in Maine this past summer and it was sooooo good! I too ordered the eggs Benedict (great minds and all that) and they were just perfect. Our two daughters were craving pancakes and the sweet and personable server assured them that the Miss Portland pancakes were the best in the world, so now my 6- and 10-year olds get a little braggy about eating the World’s Best Pancakes : ) (Full disclosure: I sampled some off my kids’ plates and yeah, the pancakes are awesome!)

What a neat diner! Our favorite local family owned breakfast place here in SC has the same jammy packs in the same holder and the strawberry is definitely the favorite. Our place has awesome home fires too made from fresh potatoes and that is so rare these days. And listen to this, 2 eggs, a huge pile of those delicious potatoes and biscuit, toast or English muffin for $2.99! Now I wish we had gone there for breakfast this morning! There is nothing like a great breakfast place!

Lana, I live in Greenvilke, SC and am wondering where your fs orite diner is.

The Grapevine in Boiling Springs. I hope you like it, too! Ask for a table by the fire!

The $2.99 special is not on the menu. Just order the two egg breakfast without meat and they will charge you $2.99 up until 11 AM each morning.

I’m the same. If I find something I like, it is impossible for me to be brave and try something else. Why take a chance?

Next time, try the homie fries. So good! A carb delight. We go there often as our doctor is conveniently located on the same street.

My husband and I owned The Four Aces Diner in West Lebanon, NH. It’s a sister to the one you visited in Portland. You should stop there the next time you visit King Arthur in Norwich, VT. They are about ten minutes apart.

Only this missing from this wonderful diner is the jute box on the tables!

The A1 Diner in Gardiner, ME is another Worcester dining car still in service. Their fare is excellent, ranging from the typical to the gourmet, and their desserts can’t be beat. You should definitely visit!

This looks AH-MAZING! I’m putting it on my Maine Trip list! I’m planning on going next fall with my 3 little boys. Any other kid places that you would strongly suggest? I will be going through your blog travels to other amazing places to go visit! I’ve never been there!! It’s a bit away from Washington where we grew up, but much closer to Ohio, so we are going to go for it! ❤️
