Albertsons $41.70
Last week I pretty much lounged around in bed because of my dental surgery. So I decided to send The Girl Who Thinks She’s a Bird to Albertsons {with a small list} and this is what she came back with. Ha! Serves me right for sending a teenager to the grocery store alone.
She thought she scored the deal of the century when she was able to pick up 4 boxes of cereal and 2 gallons of milk for only $8. Although cereal was not on the list, she spotted $1.00/2 coupons on the cereal boxes and went wild.
The yogurt, cottage cheese, juice, soup {not chili} and Haggen Daz was for me and my soft foods diet. The canned chili was a surprise for her brother. Apparently she found a deal on breakfast sausages too because it looks like manager markdown stickers/coupons were removed from the packages.
For the most part, I think she did pretty good.
Garden Stand $3.00
The Girl and I were driving home and noticed someone had a sign for fresh corn at the end of their driveway. $0.50 an ear. I wasn’t able to have any but the HH said it was the best corn he had ever tasted. And I’m sure it was. Nothing beats fresh picked corn.
I did a bunch of bartering last week with friends and neighbors. You can see how all the deals played out HERE.
Fresh from the Garden
Let’s just say we are swimming in potatoes right now. 😉

And tomatoes too. Wait until you see what I made with these beauties.

Another thing we harvested a boatload of last week was beets. The are still chillin’ in the refrigerator and I’m not sure what I’m going to do with them yet. But once I figure it out, I’ll let you know.
Mr. Produce Guy – FREE
And last but not least, this is what we salvaged from our free produce boxes from Mr. Produce Guy last week. I don’t know about you, but I love free food. 🙂
How did you do with your grocery budget this week? Did you stock up on anything exciting?

Mavis, I’m really enjoying reading your blog. We garden, too, and enjoy it. I can and freeze a lot of our food. We have chickens, 4 pigs, and goats (Mavis and Murphy 🙂 who are just little mini-fainting pets) and started just this year raising quail for food. We also got a good deal on Craigslist for an incubator so we can hatch our own eggs and raise whatever sort of birds we decide on in the future. I’ve got 80 quail eggs and a couple dozen chicken eggs in there right now. It’s a lot of work, but very satisfying.

How do you like growing quail? I’ve been thinking about it.

We like it a lot; haven’t decided firmly on the breed we want though. Right now we have jumbo Bob White’s because they were available to us, but we are checking out jumbo Coturnix and a couple of other fowl options. We started out with about 120 quail and have ended up with many more and are selling them to hunters for dog-training purposes. Thanks goodness my husband loves to build things. 🙂 I spent a couple of hours peeling quail eggs the other night to get enough to pickle. 🙂

We’re still living off what’s in the pantry & the fridge. So no budget busting (just yet).
I spent an hour or so picking blackberries at a local elementary school’s bushes with a friend yesterday. I ended up with about 5 lbs of berries FREE, while she took home about 3. We also stopped at the Everett Farmers Market. I got 4 pints of raspberry/blueberry mix (usually $11, but I got it for $9 for returning 2 boxes. I love that Hayton does that!) & 2 GIANT cucumbers for $1. Two GIANT bell peppers for a buck. & splurged heavily on a quart of strawberries for $11 😡 We did a u-pick this year but the kids went through the last 4 lbs I had frozen for smoothies while the other 13 was used for jam (which out of 11 jars, they only have 5 left!)
Swear as fast as I make it.. it’s gone =b

Have you ever had borscht soup? It is DELISH! Perhaps you can make some of that with all those beets, and can it? That is what I would do if I had some. I can’t wait until I get to put out a garden next year. There will be a few rows of beets, that is for sure.

For the beets: borscht, definitely. Love it. Here is a wonderful recipe!

And we love pickled beets with onions. So beautiful in the jar, and tasty.
