Costco $27.82
Costco has 10 pound sacks of organic sweet potatoes on sale for $6.99. Holy smokes that is a good deal. Non Organic sweet potatoes are running about $1.69 a pound at the store right now so I totally bought a bag. Plus Lucy the puggle dog has been eating about a half of a sweet potato a day lately. She loves them.
As for the dried fruit, we were out and yep, I picked up some yummy chips and some evil Costco milk cartons as well. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand the shape of those things!
QFC $20.10
QFC is having a stock up and save sale with certain items on sale for only $0.67 each when you buy them in sets of 15. I thought $0.67 for tuna was a pretty good deal as well as canned diced tomatoes with green chilies.
I know you’re probably thinking, Mavis, why on earth are you buy canned tomatoes when you grew over 200 pounds of tomatoes this year? And the answer is simple. Convenience. I actually didn’t can any tomatoes this year {well, other than salsa}. I froze them all. So I stocked up for those times when I’m in a hurry and don’t have the time to thaw some out in the refrigerator {or I forget}. I’m human after all. 🙂
Mr. Produce Guy – FREE
Last week we scored organic strawberries, apples, lettuce and cantaloupe from Mr. Produce guy. Life is good when you are eating trash. 😉
How did you do this week? Did you get sucked into Costco too?

Ha! I remember when they first changed those milk cartons. My Costco put signs up on the refrigerator doors explaining why they did it (can’t remember why, now), etc., etc.

Even though I did can tomatoes this season, I always stock up on diced, with or without green chilies, this one store I shop at has them in a 2 pack for a dollar. Can’t beat that at all…I snagged 10 for $5. Tuna, .50 a can, another $4 for that, people here love tuna. Free produce was 4 pounds mixed onions, about 4 pounds carrots, almost a half bushel of apples (yep, more apple butter for me!) and, with the produce was some baked goods, as in doughnuts and 2 loaves of Italian that is being turned into garlic bread. Then I was “gifted” food items…4 cans of corn, 4 of green beans,2 of pinto beans (refried beans!), 2 cans of sliced carrots and 4 cans of whole potatoes, 2 packages of hot dogs and a quart of fresh green beans. Oh and 5 pounds of chicken legs! Only spent $9 total. I am happy camper.

That’s a great round-up of food. Where have you found a “Mr. Produce Guy” – sure wish I could find one!
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Shirley,
I recommend asking you local grocery stores. Sooner or later you’ll find one that will give away their scraps.
Kathy says
Shirley,
Like Mavis said, ask your local grocery stores. The one I get mine from usually composts their unsold produce but if one asks and gets there before it’s shipped out, they will give it to those who ask.

I love Costco….but what are they thinking with the milk jugs???? The WORST!
My dogs’ poop is always orange-y! They love sweet potatoes and pumpkin. Just don’t give Lucy the skins. She’ll be pooping her brains out! 😛

Do you do any prep before Lucy eats the sweet potatoes? My dog loves “people food” and I’m trying to introduce more vegetables, but I’m never sure if I need to do anything to them.

I don’t have a Costco membership, just one at Sam’s which I hit this past Wednesday and picked up a few things. I hit Walmart Thursday and got 8 cans of Libbey’s corn and green beans, 4 each, and they only cost me 40 cents each. I had two $1 off, of four cans, coupons from the Sunday insert a few weeks back, Thursday was the day they expired, and Walmart has them for 65cents per can. I got the ones that were no salt or sugar added and I’ll drain and rinse them before using them anyway. I’ll be picking up food from the food bank drop held monthly by my church on Thursday so I will hopefully be set for about another month depending on what I get. The last two months we haven’t gotten any type of meat so I’ll probably have to buy some boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut them in half and freeze them for future use.

I too, grabbed a sack of the organic sweet potatoes. I grew two crops of sweet potatoes this summer, one is still in the ground, so, these will come in handy til I dig up the rest. We had two huge ones baked last night actually and I’m still feeling good about my harvest even though, my sweet potatoes, the ones that I grew, look like Mini Me’s next to the COSTCO organics. Has anyone else had luck with sweet potatoes ? Any tips ?
p.s.
I made my dogs some doggie cookies with pumpkin and peanut butter and I’m thinking of using sweet potato instead of pumpkin. It will Rock their little doggie world.

I followed your updates and posts and saw you had a gang-buster year with your potato yields. Being slightly lazy ( um….. ) I didn’t pay enough attention to my 20lbs. of potatoes that I planted in the ground and lost most of my yield. The reason ? Turns out when the plants were turning yellow and falling over I took it to mean I was ready to harvest, on closer inspection, it was a bad infestation of spider mites. So, lesson learned. Gonna be like Mavis and get me and my pajamas out early and take care of business.

We do not have a cosco, kroger, target, sam’s, etc. but I am watching extreme couponing on TLC and one shopper is doing her shopping at K Mart. I do love K Mart and have gotten gas coupons for $.30/ gallon of gas. There is always a way to do better.
