Local bakery $63.29
We have decided to make conscious effort to support the local bakeries and restaurants we would normally buy from that still have their doors open for take out. This week we picked up a loaf of sourdough, two pastries and a $50 gift card to use in better times.
Local Sugar Shack $45.90
More expensive than Mrs. Butterworth’s, but it’s the real deal and absolutely delicious.
Although totally not food, we also grabbed a magazine subscription to Maine Magazine and Maine Home Design since both were running a special {$12 for a 1 year subscription}. Normally we go to the library once a week and can look at these magazines for free, but the library is closed and well, I truly LOVE both of these magazines and it was another way to support a local business.

We did an initial stock up of beans, rice, pet food, etc. about two weeks ago (we had almost nothing on hand to start), and then we went to the grocery store last week in the hopes of not having to go again for 2-3 weeks. I’ve been making some pantry meals and some of our simpler freezer meals (due to the limited range of ingredients available in stores) to restock the freezer. I’m trying to freeze more meals than we are using up each week so that there’s a net gain. I wish we had a local bakery we could support, but we don’t, so I made zucchini muffin batter and 5 loaves of bread to freeze yesterday. With pantry meals, freezer meals, frozen bread, and our amazing CSA, we’re in pretty good shape.
I technically start working from home today, but I forgot the charger for my laptop at work, so I have to run into work for that. Since I have to go in, I’m planning to leave some eggs from our chickens in my office fridge for a coworker to help minimize his family’s trips to the store.

We’re doing the same thing for our local restaurants, even though we don’t eat out very often. My husband said we can get pizza every week, yes! He’s not the biggest fan of pizza but it’s my favorite food! Chinese takeout is next.

How do you eat so many treats, bread and rice and still stay so little. I would love to but there is no possible way

Did you make the Irish soda bread? I made some for the first time on Tuesday, but yours looks better.
Also, will you please link your beans/rice recipe again? Thanks!

I LOVE the idea of buying gift cards NOW for future use. We also have been having local carry-out since our shelter-in-place started about a week ago or so. I really can’t keep track…
I think I’m going to pay for 2 haircuts in advance too. I heard that a gardener was cited in our general area for working (more than 6 ft from ANYBODY) 🙁 That just doesn’t seem right 🙁
I love your blog, have since I discovered it several years ago form your potato tower Pinterest pin!
Hugs to you and all your readers,
Elise

Here in the Maritimes in Canada we are under emergency measures. Anyone travelling into the province from another Canadian province must self-isolate. And, of course there are the federal restrictions on travel into Canada itself. So no free access to other provinces or Canada unless you self-isolate. An exception will be made for those bringing critical supplies or service to our province. All stores, daycares, libraries, most banks and businesses are closed except for grocery stores and pharmacies which are operating during limited hours. All beaches, trails and parks are closed. Grocery stores only allow max 50 people in at a time and the people in line must stand two metres apart. (6ft). The cashiers in the grocery stores now have Plexiglas shields installed so they are safer. All restaurants are closed….they used to allow take out but are now moving to delivery only. There is now a max of 5 people who can gather at once. We have 28 cases so far and all are travel related. So far no community spread.
So, we’re making our own fun here….yesterday my local sourdough group participated in a cinnamon bun baking challenge each in our own homes. It was fun to do something “together” and we each had yummy cinnamon buns to eat afterwards….Quaranbuns rule!
My ukulele group has been sending each other songs to practice for when we get together again. Once it gets nice enough outside I’ll sit on the porch and serenade the neighbours (from a distance ha!).
Our 16 month old granddaughter continues to come to our house for the day as her parents are working from home. They’re both so lucky that they can work from home as many have lost their jobs here. However, trying to get any work accomplished with a 16 month old doesn’t “work”. We are able to follow the 5 people in a group rule and…..bonus we get all the snuggles!
Well, that’s about all …. keep safe everyone!

My kids are home from school for … I dunno how long. We are both now working from home. SO jammie time is all day. Literally I wake up, change into exercise clothing, lift weights in the living room or go running. Then I eventually shower, and get back into my jammies/ leggings.
We prob have to grocery shop tomorrow or Weds for milk. We have a running list and only go if we run out of something critical. We’ve got enough food, though I do have a teenaged boy. We got takeout once. We already get our produce delivered by two local services that get produce from local farms. Now I do more “add ons”, like jam, honey, dried beans, eggs.
I ordered 4 loaves of gluten free bread from North Carolina (I’m in California) and it’s delicious. I have been baking a ton of regular bread for everyone else.

Here in the UK, as from tonight, we are on lockdown for at least three weeks. Hardly surprising after the ridiculous, selfish behaviour of thousands of people over the week-end. All businesses except those providing food, and pharmacies are closed. Funerals are the only social occasions allowed. Lots more, I haven’t really taken it all in yet.
It was Mother’s Day in the UK yesterday, my oldest g’son came to my door with my gifts, he stood at least six feet away talking to me (I have asthma and other conditions, so have been self-isolating since last Monday), all I really wanted was a big cuddle stay safe everyone.

Today we made the list: a county resident confirmed with virus. Up until this time, all the cases in the regional hospital came from other counties. Since I’m high risk, been staying away from people as much as I could for a while. Did very early go downtown to my favorite coffee shop for one last cup and to purchase a gift card. Guy behind the counter, a manager, was very pleased to sell me one. Also went to the farmer’s market. Here they are considered needed, so will continue. Was there while the farmers were setting up. Learned that the baker that I wanted to purchase something from wasn’t coming this week, so I said my thank yous and said good bye.
A local restaurant decided that they couldn’t make it on carry out, so they closed. Got a message that they were giving away their fresh produce. Scored a 50 lb bag of red potatoes, 5 doz eggs, and misc. other veggies. We’ve been sharing with others the potatoes and eggs. With the understanding that when this ends, we all support the restaurant.
What can I say, so far we are surviving. Take care, and look forward to ready your posts Mavis.
