Costco $49.23
A friend said they were making the trip to Costco so we {along with the neighbors} put in our requests for fresh veggies. I stocked up on butter and eggs, diced tomatoes {for the Copy Cat Panera Tomato Soup} and requested some beef jerky for the HH.
Local Bakery $7.50
A baguette and an everything croissant filled with a delicious chive cream cheese. YumYumYum.
Local General Store $14.23
According to the cashier, alcohol and ice cream are the most popular items at our little general store. This week we tried Gifford’s ice cream that’s made right here in Maine. The Girl raved about the Mississippi mud ice cream and I tried the chocolate which was really good. Maybe we should try them all?
Local Eatery $15.11 {Breakfast Date “to-go”}
The HH and I went down to the local bagel place for a to go breakfast date. We got in a walk and were able to help support a local business so it was a win-win.

It was another week of overeating and I am now sporting a 3 month food baby belly. If I don’t cut back now, I might have to break out the elastic pants {which I only own 1 pair of} so this week the plan is to eat less. More soup, less treats, smaller portions more outside time.
How about you? What are you eating these days? More homemade stuff? DO tell, we want to know.
Keep Calm and Carry on,
~Mavis

And the winners of the Terra Cotta Garden Markers are:
Nancy from Mass who commented: Well, the past 10 years I keep saying I’m not gonna have a garden because the animals keep getting to it. But this year, I’m doing a raised bed it’s only gonna be 3‘ x 4‘ and I’m going to plant peas, lettuce, radishes, tomatoes and a pickling cucumber plant or 2. Maybe some beans too. I used to have a very large garden but the deer would strip it clean. I’m currently regrowing scallions and even some iceberg lettuce in the kitchen.
Wendy Good who commented: I will be growing heirloom tomatoes, onions, cabbage, kohlrabi, lettuce, spinach, okra, peppers, bush beans and pole beans, sugar snap peas, radishes, zucchini, arugula, kale, spaghetti squash, delicata squash, cucumbers, thyme, oregano, basil, sage, lavender, cilantro, chives, parsley, Egyptian onions, lovage, bronze fennel, strawberries, asparagus, spinner gourds, and any other fun thing I find! I do some planting in raised beds and some just in the ground, rotating what I can each year. I love heirlooms!
A big thank you to everyone who entered! Stay tuned for more giveaways. 🙂

My daughter and I have been doing a lot of baking while we are spending more time at home. Bread, cinnamon rolls, cake, cookies and I have been eating all of them ! I don’t know if my pants will fit when it’s time to go back to work ! We are having rainy weather here in Ohio this week so not as much outside activities….may just have to start running the stairs 🙂
Have a great week Mavis !

$4.99 for Rao sauce – a great bargain. I have paid over 7.00 for a jar. And it is phenomenal. Especially the sensitive stomach marinara. Stay safe everyone.
Peg says
I don’t buy pasta sauce very often, but when I do, it’s only Rao’s! I’ve lost weight, but I have to force myself to eat when I’m stressed or anxious. Stay well!
Andrea says
Congratulations to Wendy and Nancy! Would love an update on your gardens later in the season – perhaps a guest post? Enjoy the garden markers!

Have your friends get the Pao’s from Costco. Much better prices there.

Here on the ME/NH border we are having lots of rain and the winds are beginning to kick up, too. I am guessing that at your house it is the same. I hope that you and the HH get lots of your inside projects done today. For the first time ever (and I have been cooking for over 50 years), I am planning out my menus for 2 weeks at a time, to see how long I can last without going to the grocery store. So far, so good and we are eating well.
Beth says
I took a “vow of comfort foods” during this time of the Covid-19 pandemic so I made shepherd’s pie, hamburgers and potato salad, my mom’s hamburger goulash which we affectionately call “glop”…oh and one night we had chicken Caesar salad with croutons made from leftover fancy bakery sourdough- that definitely made it special. We also had takeout pizza one night and yesterday cooked a ham, au gratin potatoes, corn and spinach salad- more importantly we finally found a Texas sheet cake recipe that meets with our approval- it’s the little things these days…
Stay safe and healthy Mavis and everyone out there reading my favorite blog!

Texas sheet cake!!! That is something I haven’t made in years. Thanks for the reminder!

Can we get in on the Texas sheet cake recipe??

I ended up getting the virus and it shut my family down for over two weeks. I think I’m finally coming out of it. I was useless, couldn’t move without losing my breath. So my husband took care of our three kids all day long (4, 2, 10mo). Needless to say they lived on mostly snacks and we had to-go food delivered a lot.
Anne Wiebe says
Oh Katie, I’m so sorry to hear that! Thank goodness you came out of it alright! Take good care and watch out for it coming back, I hope not!
Mimi says
Well wishes to you Katie! My heart goes out to anyone dealing with this virus, whether patient or caregiver.
Gina says
Glad to hear you are doing better. God bless the caregivers…the well ones and the ones trying to heal themselves.

Wild night with high winds and tornadoes. My brother in Georgia was hit and has a huge tree on his house but they are okay which is the important thing.
We can get Rao’s at our local discount grocery for $2.99 just about anytime.

Hello! I know you have posted where you purchased your “bunny, pottery mug” (pictured in this post with your Good and Plenty) before…however, I can’t seem to find it now. Would you care to share again, please? Thanks so much!
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes! My buddy Sue Tirrell makes them. 🙂 Here is her Instagram link if you’d like to contact her. https://www.instagram.com/suetirrell/

Thanks so much! I am looking for a special gift and something similar would be perfect! Take care.

Just wondering – how long do you cook your boiled eggs? I see the grey circles around the yolk and am wondering if it’s not a little too much? Or maybe your eggs are different than what we eat in New Zealand? I’m no expert at all – just asking nicely? I find your grocery shops fascinating – so different from what we have here – especially the packaging and prices. I cook and garden a lot too. Keep safe. 🙂
Gigi says
Here’s what I use. No dark rings in our house. https://www.crateandbarrel.com/egg-perfect-egg-timer/s353892
Taryn says
Good idea. I bring them to the boil from cold water, then boil for 7 minutes. Then tip out hot and pour cool water over. I ruined a dozen eggs last year – they smelt all sulphur-like – so did some research and it’s now so much more reliable. 🙂
Mavis Butterfield says
I put 7 eggs in a saucepan, bring it to a boil, put the lid on and turn off the heat and let them sit there for a half hour or so until they have cooled down. 🙂
Tamara says
Once the eggs come to a boil, leave the lid on and let them sit for ten minutes. Pour off the hot water after ten minutes and place in cold water. No rings. I learned this from Martha Stewart years ago. Always works.
Jill Hamilton says
Mavis, I know you’re not generally a “healthy eater” (haha) but it may ease your mind to know that Rao’s pasta sauce is “Bobby Approved” if you follow “flavcity” on Instagram. He’s awesome!
Gina says
I follow him Bobby. He does great Costco videos…just spent a ton there today. Made Kirkland’s wild caught salmon, broccoli and a navel orange for dinner tonight. And snacked on Kirkland’s chocolate covered almonds. Yes, almonds make it better!
Mel says
It was an okay food week around here, but we nearly had to throw out 3 weeks worth of groceries today. Our power went off, and our generator was not working for some reason. My husband got it working 19 minutes before the 4-hour cutoff mark (food in the fridge has to be tossed after 4 hours without power–it has happened to us twice before), so that was extremely stressful. We are fortunate that we could afford to replace that food if we had to, but we’re being advised not to go out at all as our state approaches peak, so I really did not want to do that. Luckily, the main power came on shortly after that, so I immediately started sewing and was able to crank out the next set of masks for my husband’s coworkers. I’ve been making them each day based on who is scheduled to work the following day.

You are my kind of gal, pie for breakfast! I love it. I made your apple pie for Easter, the best apple pie on the planet! I totally agree! It was scrumptious!
