Costco $135.21
Basically, our grocery budget the last two months, has been blown to smithereens. Maybe yours has too? Nobody really wants to go to the grocery store, but when we do go, it’s stock up city and throw anything in the cart that looks good.
As I was putting this post together, I realized neither of us has stepped foot in a regular grocery store in over a month. The tiny general store in town? Yes. Local bakery or take out place? Yes.
What’s been nice is having friends and neighbors ask if we/they can pick anything up whether it’s from the butchers, seafood place or Costco since one of us is going to be shopping anyway. That sense of community with the neighbors, is pretty awesome here. Even if it’s not the same exact brand {or quantities} one of us would normally buy. {5 dozen eggs! That’s a lot of omelettes}. 😉
Local Bakery $3.75
Local Pizza Place $17.14
We tried the local pizza place for the first time. The HH liked it more than I did. 🙂 What’s your favorite topping? The HH said pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza. I disagree.

Pizza is my favorite food. I’ve read about purists who have made rules about what belongs on real pizza, but I have never actually met one. I’m sure your HH is only stating his preference, but let me make the pizza issue very clear – pizza is for everyone. Anything you like to eat on pizza belongs there!
Nancy says
Maybe I missed it and am having a senior moment but what is “Beatloaf”?
Meg C says
Yes, I was also wondering about the “beatloaf”? Is it something like a lentil loaf?
Mavis Butterfield says
It’s from A Christmas Story. 🙂
Kris says
Lol! 🙂

I haven’t had time to crunch the numbers precisely, but I think we’re actually saving money on groceries right now. Three weeks ago, I went grocery shopping for three weeks of food but only spent what we’d normally spend for two weeks. We were due to shop tomorrow, but we just decided to wait one more week based on our state’s curve peaking, so we are now looking at 4 weeks of groceries for the price of 2 weeks. We have had to order things online that haven’t been available in stores (like flour and yeast), and we do still receive weekly CSA deliveries, but I think we’d still be under budget even with that factored in. Some of that savings has gone to new expenses, like mask making supplies, though.
I’ve become really good at stretching ingredients so that we’re eating really well while still stocking the freezer, but I do wish I could time grocery trips a little better. A few weeks ago, the advice for our area was that the next few weeks would be critical and to stay home. So, we stayed home for those few weeks, but we now are delaying shopping because they’re now saying this week is critical and to stay home. Again, we’re not strapped for supplies since I’ve planned things out, so we are absolutely fine, but it’s still tricky to plan for the unknown. At the same time, we know someone who is still making daily grocery trips, so maybe I’m overthinking it.

Cheez -it Snap’d disgusting..What was your take on them?
Katherine says
We love them!!
Sue says
Hi Mavis! Who ate the rest of the pizza if you only had 2 slices of the pineapple pizza? It looks like you make the best salads. Yum!
Mavis Butterfield says
The Girl. We both love pineapple. 🙂
Lana says
Our grocery spending is way down since we have been averaging 2 and a half weeks between shopping trips. So far this month we. have spent about $125
Michelle says
We are definitely buying to buy and just get out of the store. I don’t ever buy cereal when it’s not on sale and I found myself having to buy Chex not on sale because my daughter is gluten free and we were out! Luckily it was on sale at Fred Meyer this week so I got a bunch of boxes. They almond milk shelves were also empty and we go through at least 4 a week so hopefully they can catch up before we have to go back again.
We are saving money somewhere but I don’t think it’s on groceries. Gas is so cheap and we are not driving anywhere! And we are definitely not going without food or treats. 🙂
Mavis Butterfield says
The last time we filled up was 6 weeks ago and we still have more than a half a tank of gas. It’s interesting so see the different spending categories shift.
Heather says
I was able to get a good deal on Almond milk from Amazon. It took almost a week to arrive, but we had difficulty finding it in the stores.

Pizza, it’s hard not to become picky about your pizza when living in an area full of Italian immigrants. We have more Italian restaurants here than any other type. First thing Son #2 complained about when he moved to Maine is that Mainers don’t know pizza. Maybe true, but the chowders and seafood are fantastic! And no, he’s definitely not moving back.
Cash flow makes a difference in shopping styles I’ve learned through the years. When my hubby suddenly lost his job a few years ago, we knuckled down big time. Every purchase was considered multiple times before buying. Obviously vacation plans were cancelled as was the house remodeling. Being able to take advantage of good buys become difficult when available monies were short. Two years it took of this style of living before things lightened up.
Carol @ Lake Tapps says
Yessss pineapple belongs on pizza…
Did I miss your choc cake recipe? It looks divine!
Overall we’re spending less on groceries but that’s because my HH has been doing all of the shopping – he sticks to the list and doesn’t impulse buy. I ventured out yesterday (mask & gloves…I’m high risk due to a kidney tx) to WinCo and I kinda went crazy. Part of it was just the fact I could shop again by myself.. and yes to impulse buy. But after hearing some meat companies are closing (due to the virus) I stocked up on meat. Lol and hair products.
We are spending less on gas, food, projects and entertainment while still trying to support our local restaurants by doing takeout.
Stay safe and happy Monday!

Our budget has been soooo different the last two months! Eating out/entertainment? Nope! Gas? Less than half our usual monthly amount! Spending money? Nope! So I don’t worry if it wants to shift to our grocery budget!
Carrie says
My husband just told me we are under budget for the month. I was surprised! I think we were over in March however with a few big stock ups. We are going at least 2 weeks between trips now. It is weird because that has also changed how I meal plan. I usually plan by the month and I am finding it makes more sense to plan for 2 weeks at a time.
I am also going to adjust our pantry a bit going forward. I keep a well stocked panty and buy when things are on sale. I probably have between 3-6 months supply of on hand for most things. I am going to try and stretch that this year to closer to a year sippy of most items.
We just ate out for the first time since February and that was only because our well stopped working. It was fixed quickly thankfully.
Heather says
We normally spend about $100 a week, but the past month have been averaging $250 a week. It is really the only luxury we have right now, so everything goes in the cart. In the mood for steaks, they aren’t on sale, who cares, in the cart they go. Kids put special chips or snacks in the list..in the cart they go. Can’t go out for sushi… get the ingredients at the store. We are eating our way through this pandemic ♀️
Celeste says
Yes please post the banana muffin recipe. Thanks!
Katherine says
Our grocery spending is up since DH is working from home and we are buying more junk food than we normally wood. On the flip side, our spending for stuff and outings is zero.
Tracy says
I think folks should eat their pizza — or any other food — any darn way they want. That said, I can’t stand pineapple in any form, and don’t love pizza with any kind of fruit on it. ::::shudder::::::
Lindsey says
When I looked at your grocery picture, I was horrified by all the excess (plastic) packaging. Nothing to do with you, that is how they do it in the store, but still—does no one at the marketing end consider that this stuff will not be decomposing for hundreds of years, if then? And what is wrong with the paper mache’ egg cartons, for heaven’s sake? They can at least be put straight into the compost heap when they are empty.
Annette says
Most, if not all of those, can be recycled.
Dianna says
Salads always look good to me when someone else makes them. My salads never look like that!
Heather says
I usually shop via the sales, but the local stores aren’t having many sales or the items are sold out so I know that our grocery bill is higher. We luckily live in cattle country so if we have to we can buy local beef.
Annette says
Is that chocolate cake homemade?
Mavis Butterfield says
It came from a box mix I bought a while back. 🙂
