Local Eatery $14.25
Crabby cakes for the 3rd week in a row. We just can’t seem to get enough of them. π
Costco $15.74
Just the basics. Is it just me, or does it seem like most of the produce Costco carries is organic now?
Leftover drunken beans. The HH loves them and I predict they’ll be on the menu this winter at least twice a month.
Beans and rice, rice and beans.
Costco canned chicken. Better than canned tuna in my book. I like to add sweet pickles and apples to mine. Dried cranberries too when we have them. Sadly though we haven’t had any for a while now.
BBQ season has arrived. Oh joy. I wish we had thought to buy some frozen burgers when we were at Costco last month but we totally weren’t thinking about summer bbq’s when we were there but maybe I’ll give the local butcher shop a call and see what’s available.
Have you been to Five Guys before? I love their hamburgers and strawberry shakes. I don’t think I’ve had anything from Five Guys in over a year, but I’ve been craving that place lately. BIG TIME. Homemade strawberry shakes, they never taste the same as when you get them from a burger joint with a little whip cream on top and a fat red straw.
Grilled chicken, bacon pineapple weenies and crispy brussles sprouts.
Eggs with hoisin sauce a little leftover bbq.
Eggs and chicken weenies.
Do you say guac or guacamole? The HH can’t stand it when I say guac and he always flips out. HOW HARD IS IT TO SAY THE WHOLE WORD!?
I don’t tell him I say guac just to annoy him. π
I’m out of pickled beets {and I can’t find any online at a reasonable price} but I did make another loaf of my favorite no knead sun dried tomato bread. Also, goat cheese, it’s my new favorite thing. I never really ate it before we moved here, but now, I can’t get enough. The HH isn’t a fan but The Girl and I love it. I would love to find a local farm that makes the stuff, so if you know of such a place in Southern Maine, do tell.
If you have rhubarb and are looking for something delicious to make this summer, the recipe for rhubarb cherry cobbler I posted last week is AWESOME. The HH had three servings and I had 5 over the course of three days. It was that good. And, the cobbler is loaded with fruit so you know, totally a breakfast food. π
Ice cream season, it has finally arrived and we are up to a twice a week habit right now.
Joy, it’s in the little things. And they all seem to revolve around food these days. π
How about YOU? What have you been eating lately? Are you on salad and ice cream mode too?
Have a great Monday everyone,
~Mavis

Looking for ways to save on your grocery budget? Back when the kids were in school, I used to cook loads of freezer meals in bulk, and preserved as much food as possible from my vegetable garden. I have written about the list of pantry staples I always have on hand and The Best Foods for Eating Well on a Tight Budget. I’ve also written about How to Cut Your Grocery Bill in HalfΒ and even did a series on 52 Ways to Save $100 a Month.Β

I made no-churn ice cream since it uses less milk, so we had that once, but it’s really been too cold for ice cream. I wish it would finally warm up. We seem to have an endless stream of cool gray days. We’re also sort of craving hamburgers, so I am saving some of the local ground beef we bought for that when it finally gets warm.
We made a trek to Costco to stock up on things like olive oil, maple syrup, yogurt, and pasta (I’ve mostly been making our own pasta, which is amazing but not always convenient). We were also finally able to find salmon and shrimp (our usual grocery store rarely has the former and has been consistently sold out of the latter). So, last week we had salmon and mashed potatoes, homemade pizza, roasted chicken and potato salad, homemade chicken noodle soup, bean fajitas, tomato soup and cheddar biscuits, and Veggie Lover’s Pasta Salad. I also made banana bread and oatmeal zucchini muffins.

I say guac!

Guac too!!!

I think saying GUAC is super satisfying! Way more fun than the whole word.

I buy dried cranberries (craisins) at Costco. Very good. They always have them at our store.
Love the paint on your hand in the ice cream photo.

I recognize that Peanut Buster Parfait – my teen boy works at DQ. Their tiramisu shake is sooo good. Sometimes I ask for the cake pieces from that in my PBP instead of the peanuts. It makes it super sweet tho – ask me if I care Oh, and the cotton candy dip is good too. Do you do the surveys on the receipt for the free Dilly Bars? #worthit.
Have a great week, Miss Mavis!

Hey LaToya! I haven’t seen a comment from you in a while… glad you are still around. π

Some of our meals last week and this coming week:
taco salad
French toast and bacon (someone on a teaching blog asked which one we liked most: French toast, pancakes, or waffles–so of course, I started craving!)
salmon with creamy dill sauce
creamy Ritz chicken (yum!!! i don’t boil chicken, tho–just bake it first) recipe here: https://www.food.com/recipe/easy-creamy-sour-cream-chicken-casserole-108651
spicy pork tacos with cabbage, cheese, (and jalapeno cream sauce picked up from Taco Del Mar)

If you can find goat’s milk the cheese is easy to make. bring the milk to a near boil-careful not to burn it-then add lemon juice or vinegar. Wait for curds to form then drain in a cheesecloth lined colander. Voila! You can season it with salt, herbs, garlic or just leave it plain. it lasts in the fridge for a few days if you don’t eat it first! LOVE goat cheese!

Our Five Guys now has curbside pickup. You order online and describe your car. They bring the food out to you.

Mavis, since this is the second time you have mentioned pickled beets, I thought I would send you to my family recipe that I posted on my old blog. These are very easy, require no canning, and have been a favorite since I was a child. As mentioned in the post my dad made them often, and the recipe is from a very old Kerr cookbook. Try them and see what you think. Adjust the spices to your liking. https://grandmaloyskitchen.blogspot.com/2011/08/ingredient-spotlight-pickled-beets.html

Thank you for sharing! Iβve Pinned your blog post with this recipe.

Try a log of goat cheese with honey and walnuts on top. Eat it with the pretzel chips from Costco (actually we get all of this at Costco!) Heaven!
Marcia says
I love the canned chicken from Costco. It is great for everything. Chicken salad, stew, soup, Thai curry, enchiladas…
Sue says
I love it thereβs more organic choices in produce but hate thatβs it wrapped in one time plastic.
I love pickled beets, in fact I love pickled anything.
This is for LaToyaβs comment, my husband loves the dilly bars so much that I got a box for his birthday.
I could eat crab cakes everyday also. Best I had was in Maryland on the harbor.
Morgan says
Homemade Pickled Beets are super easy and super tasty! I get carried away every year and end up with quarts and quarts of them but they never go to waste!
Lace Faerie says
That chicken salad looks delicious, will you share your recipe?

Each time you post about “crabby” cakes, I think of Sponge Bob Square Pants.., and say in my head:
CRABBY PATTIES! My kid was obsessed with that cartoon.
The ice cream photo has now ensured that I’ll be heading to DQ after work.
Mrs. M. says
I say “guacamole”….
and “family” instead of “fam,”
pregnant instead of “preggo,”
and “supper” not “dinner.”
But that’s a whole different story. π
I don’t tell any of my family it bothers me to have words shortened because they have a bit of Mavis in them and would do it more often just to annoy me. Lol
I have a friend who shortens everyone’s names to one syllable… why, You ask!? Well, I don’t know. ββοΈ
Mrs. M. says
That’s supposed to be the lady doing the “I don’t know” shrug. I don’t know why it came up as the female symbol… I’m not trying to start a gender conversation.
Oh, I say “conversation” instead of “convo.”
