Well, I don’t know what’s going on at your house, but at our place we have pretty much given up on any sort of meal or menu planning this summer. Most days, it’s either too hot to cook or we have been so busy with house and art projects that by the end of the day it’s pretty much a free for all when it comes to any sort of dinner.
Pie has become my breakfast of choice lately, and around mid week I was able to polish off the sour cherry pie I had made last weekend {anyone want the recipe? It was delicious.
Thanks to the two rows of lettuce we have growing in the garden boxes it was big salad city.
These days I’m adding eggs, chopped apples, cheese, dried cranberries and pumpkin seeds to my leafy greens.
I also made a batch of Mrs. HB’s favorite quinoa salad which lasted me a few days.
And tuna salad has become a summer favorite around here as well. {I usually add chopped apple, relish and dried cranberries if we have them}.
It’s been a while since we’ve gone to a bakery but The Girl was out running errands so I had her stop off and pick up some bread and use the gift card we received from the tea basket I won a few weeks ago.
The HH made bruchetta for dinner using the basil from our garden and the tomatoes our neighbors gave us a few days earlier.
Jelly toast, scrambled eggs with hosin sauce and cheese balls {In case you were wondering, we still have about 4 pounds of cheese balls sitting in the fridge}. 😉
Pizza over the kitchen sink. Newman’s Own supreme is still our favorite frozen pizza.
And remember all those beans we bought last week { I think we bought a total of 27.5 pounds} well, on one of the cooler days I threw two cups of beans in the crockpot with some leftover sausage, a can of tomatoes, a can of Rotel and some chicken stock and holy canolies, it turned out fantastic. Plus, it was enough to last 3 meals.
I’m going to try the same combo this week but use some shredded chicken that’s been sitting in the freezer for a while.
And last but not least… Jam. I tried out a new recipe and it turned so good, I’ll be sharing the recipe tomorrow.
Grocery Store $34.40
Much needed rations. Cherries were $1.99 a pound and from Washington state if you can believe that. 🙂 How much are cherries going for in your neck of the woods… Curious minds want to know.
Have a great Monday everyone, stay cool.

Do you use any dressing for your salads? They don’t appear to have any. I like pomegranate vinaigrette on salad with fruit and maybe feta.

I just came home from cherry picking so I would love your cherry pie recipe. I picked 4 qts. of raspberries at a friend’s house and 5 qts. of sour cherries at a orchard.

I made a ton of food for the Fourth of July (cheesecake, potato salad, coleslaw, an entire crock pot of baked beans, etc.). I had planned for us to eat the leftovers for several days, but our refrigerator died on Saturday, so everything went into the trash instead (along with a few weeks worth of groceries we had just bought). We currently have what little we could salvage in coolers, so we have to go out and buy more ice each day until the new refrigerator gets here. In theory, the new fridge arrives today, but it will apparently take another day for it to be cold enough to use. Never a dull moment.
Mavis Butterfield says
That’s awful! Never a dull moment is right.

Mavis, were you able to cook the beans from dry in the crock with the other ingredients? That sounds so easy!
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes. I am actually making another batch today. Cooking time was 6 hours in high. 🙂

We made Mrs. Hillbilly’s kale salad last week and man, it was so good. Going to make it again as soon as we have more kale to harvest.
