Local Bakery Trip #1 Free thanks to a gift card that now has a zero balance. 🙁
Their potato rosemary bread makes THE BEST grilled cheese sandwiches. I use butter for the outsides of my bread, but I’ve heard of some people using mayonnaise. I haven’t tried it yet. Have YOU?
Local Bakery Trip #2 $19.05 and worth every penny.
6 dinner rolls, 1 brioche loaf, 1 blueberry hand pie and a slice of tomato basil focaccia. I could never be one of those people who give up bread and sugar.
The HH made meatballs the same day so we had mini meatball subs on dinner rolls. I guess I was so excited to eat dinner that my picture ended up blurry. 😉
Luckily though he doubled the recipe and so we were able to freeze a bunch for later.
Even though I’m not really cooking this year, I did go all out at made a batch of 8 can chicken soup on night in the Crock Pot. If you haven’t tried the recipe yet, you should, it’s super easy.
Plus now we have leftovers in the freezer. I’m telling you…. May is going to be a no cook {or is it no prep?} month for us. Actually, at this rate, it might be a no spend month too. I am convinced we’ll be too busy in the garden prepping beds and planting like mad to worry about what’s for dinner. I don’t know hoe many meals I’ll be able to fit in our little freezer at the bottom of our fridge, but I’m willing to find out.
The HH made Thai chicken peanut noodles for dinner one night and I tossed the leftovers into the freezer to see if the recipe would work as a freezer meal. I mean, I don’t see why not, they sell noodles in the freezer section at the store, right? We’ll see.
Ritz cracker chicken with baby potatoes and a dinner roll. Note to self: Find a local honey person.
Yes, I made him muffins. 😉 Cherry almond with a crumb topping. Give me a shout if you want the recipe.
And last but not least… Miss Lucy. It’s like she truly doesn’t understand why she can’t sit at the table with us. It’s heartbreaking sometimes.
Have a wonderful Monday everyone. Today should will be a high of 26 and a low of ZERO here in Maine. Weeeeeee!
~Mavis

I tried mayonaise one time for my grilled cheese because someone was raving about it. The mayonaise was ok, but I much prefer the flavor of butter.
Jennifer Jo says
Mayonnaise on the bread, butter in the pan. Try it!
Mary Ann says
Yes! This is how I was taught to make grilled cheese sandwiches. My husband thinks I’m crazy. He was taught nothing on the inside of the sandwich, but cheese, and butter on the outside.
Deanna says
Muffin recipe PLEASE
Amanda Tirado says
Yes. I was going to ask for this, too.
All your food looks delightful!
Faith says
I’ve always buttered the outside of the bread and put mayo on the inside. My husband only likes the outside buttered. It’s a southern vs. northern thing in our house.
VBarron says
Yes, please share your muffin recipe!
Linda says
I double cook almost everything. I also find myself fixing dinner and then baking chicken, roasting veggies, or making a soup for the freezer at the same time.. Love my freezer!
Melissa Nowak says
Recipe please!
Lana says
No clue on the mayo. Hubby would revolt. My secret for reheated freezer soups is a few drops of Frank’s hot sauce. It really perks up the flavor since frozen soups seem to sometimes just go flat sometimes.
Jo says
You had a very simple salad dressing recipe with jelly and balsamic vinegar that you posted a few years ago. I was hoping I could get that from you again? Thanks!
Mona says
Hi Jo. Here is the recipe for the dressing.
My new favorite salad dressing:
1/4 olive oil
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon jam
Put all the ingredients in a jar, shake it like a polaroid picture and pour desired amount over salad. Store extra dressing in the fridge. A big thank you to the person who recommended this to me. I have emptied 2 jars of jam so far this year using this recipe.
It is in this post:

Thanks Mona!
Cathriin says
You must try the mayo we love it
Susie Janov says
I love mayo on the outside of grilled sandwiches. I think it tastes better but, honestly, it’s mostly about convenience for me. Much easier to spread mayo (especially edge to edge) than cold butter. And yeah, I know I could melt the butter in the pan first, but it doesn’t leave enough for the second side! At least try the mayo once, Mavis, to see how you like it.
Laura Anne says
Oh I just love the combination of cherry and almond so please share the recipe!!
Brianna says
I am not a fan of mayonnaise and it takes my household of a year to go through a tiny container of it. I think it is gross, especially when on burgers. I never have heard of people using it for grilled cheese. I just soften butter and spread it on the bread. I don’t dip my grilled cheese in anything either. I do think the type of bread and cheese used make a big difference on how good it tastes and are worth the splurge.
Grandma Loy says
I second, third, fourth or whatever the request for the muffin recipe. I love cherries and almonds together. Thanks.
Mimi says
Mayo + grilled cheese=nope. I tried it once and did not think it was worth repeating.
Hopefully you will never have to give up bread – that bakery sounds fabulous!
After years of denial (and telling friends to give me all their unwanted gluten) I’m facing reality…wheat is making me feel terrible. Eating bread has an almost immediate effect and I’m feeling much better without it. It’s so often the things we love. 🙁
Earlene Nojd says
Muffin recipe please
Diane says
Mavis, you (or your husband) should try making your own bread. It’s super easy if you get a bread machine to do all the kneading for you. Then you can just dump out the dough if you want a free-form loaf or put in a traditional bread pan.
I had never made bread before I got a Breadman for $3 at a garage sale! Then I made every single loaf of bread in our house for the next 5 years! It’s SO easy and your house will smell heavenly! The best $3 I ever spent! Ha ha!
Lori says
Hi Mavis, I use mayo for my grill cheese all the time. My grandmother (Mom-Mom) taught me that. Once it’s grilled to perfection you lightly butter the top to give that nice butter flavor. Using mayo makes it toast even and doesn’t tear the bread like butter can. I wouldn’t make it any other way.
Janice V says
I would love to have the muffin recipe.
Mary Pearce says
Yes please on the cherry almond muffins recipe.
Marcia HEIN says
I’d love the cherry almond muffin recipe, please!
Staci says
I would love the muffin recipe! Cherries and almonds – swoon. 🙂
How do you keep Lucy on the slimmer side? Our puggle, Yoshi, needs to lose a few pounds but he is very food driven. He only gets his food (which is now the healthy weight version) and 2 or 3, 5 calorie milk bones each day. He doesn’t get table food and we try to keep him moving but man, it’s hard with the cold and both working full days, to get him outside for extensive exercise. Anyone have any suggestions?
Traci says
You might try slowly decreasing the amount of dry food he gets. It may take a while for weight to come off but that could help. We have a chunky monkey cat and our vet recommended that.
Vicki says
Your Lucy reminds me of my beloved Chelsea, who passed over the rainbow bridge many years ago shortly before her fifteenth birthday. She was a terrier mix LBD (Little Black Dog). She was so incredibly smart, and almost human in many ways. When we were all gathered around the table for family celebrations, she would just sit on the floor and look so sad that she wasn’t sitting at the table with us. Everyone in my family and circle of friends loves dogs, so we just pulled up a chair and plopped her down on it. She sat politely and watched each of us as we participated in conversation. She never tried to get up on the table (not when there was food on it), she never begged, and she would sit until the last of us was finished and the table cleared off. I really feel like she just wanted to be part of the conversation, and that’s really hard when you’re little and have to sit on the floor. She had a place at my table until the day she died, and she’ll have a place in my heart for the rest of my life.
Mavis Butterfield says
That is the sweetest thing ever. Thank you for sharing.
Mary Beth says
I have an unhealthy love of mayonnaise (I’ll put it on eggs or use it as a dip for French fries) and I’m not a fan of mayo on grilled cheese. The tang just doesn’t quite work.
As for the frozen noodles, I find they don’t maintain their texture very well. It might be better to freeze the sauce and protein, then cook noodles when you’re ready. That said, I’m not picky and totally eat chicken noodle soup.
