Hello Monday…
Part of me wants to fast forward to winter {my favorite season} and the other part is like my garden looks so good right now, would I really want to give that up?Β It’s a tough choice, but I do miss my jeans and long sleeved shirts. π
Food wise, it was a great week, filled with all my favorite things {well, except fruit pie} and I mostly kept cool by working down in the basement building up my inventory of Christmas ornaments and garden markers. I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot more people will be shopping online this holiday season and I want to be prepared just in case I get a bunch of orders.
Also, I’ve been thinking about doing another big food shopping trip as I think buying groceries this fall and winter is going to be a major pain. Life is so weird right now. And while the best thing to do is stay positive and take it one day at a time, I think it’s also a good idea to be prepared.

I think I’m actually cooking much less than I normally do this time of year since I decided to skip freezer cooking (too hard to shop for all that right now) in favor of just keeping ingredients on hand. So, it’s harder because I have to figure out what to make each night, but it’s easier in terms of overall quantity. Infrequent shopping has also been difficult because I can’t eat as many veggies as usual, even with CSA delivery.
Our tomatoes are coming in, so we have been eating a lot of bruschetta and BLTs. Last night we had bruschetta and sheet pan shrimp boil, and I think I’m actually making both again tonight since they’re easy, light, and summery.
I’m also dreading shopping this fall and winter, partly just because I will be insanely busy with work and partly because of the crazy times. So, I’ve slowly been stocking up on rice, pasta, beans, local meat, and other staples. We have maybe 40 meals that I froze this spring as well.

It has been so hot in KS without much relief and cooking feels awful. I try to prep everything in the morning so not as much has to be done at night. I have a gas stove and by the time Iβm done standing In front of it my head is usually wet. Nothing says sit down and enjoy a nice dinner like a sweating head. Ha!

Totally approve of the Holy Donuts! I haven’t had one in months π
The food thing- I wonder too if things will get crazy again- so it is best to be prepared but then not go to the hoarding extent ( which I may sometimes be guilty of)
Also- totally agree with the winter thing- so tired of the heat! it is my least favorite thing but seems to be the biting insects favorite time of the year. Boy, do they love me!
Such a fine balance all of this is- I love your bees by the way…

Wish I had ice cream within walking distance. I’d be doing a lot more walking π
The Chicken and Green Bean Stir Fry looked really good. Do you have the recipe for that on the blog?
Mavis Butterfield says
It’s basically this recipe: https://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/a-lighter-version-of-general-tsaos-chicken/

Due to an injury, I’m not cooking/eating much. Lots of salads and sandwiches which is great in the summer but will be horrible if this drags on when the weather gets cooler. I’m actually kind of longing for a hot meal. Not today though, there’s a heat advisory of 91 in the Puget Sound region today. Ack!, that’s hot for me (and this area). Take care everyone and be safe.

Your comment about what might be coming this fall/winter got me thinking. I did not do too badly this past spring, but I realize I was lucky. I haven’t been stocking up so much as resisting the temptation to use up what I have without replacing it. Whatever level of comfort I once had that I was “prepared” is being reset, and I find I’m needing a bigger cushion to be comfortable.

Ohhh…..a toasted coconut donut. I need one of those!

Cooking is a chore. 3 meals a day for 4 people… Last week was curry week – crockpot butter chicken and crockpot curried lentils. The lentil recipe made so much that we froze half for next week. Lots of instant pot pasta. This weekend, beans and rice. Lots of salads, particularly those with tomatoes. It’s not particularly hot here in coastal So Cal yet. Sept and Oct are our hot months. It’s going to get worse when distance learning school starts. Sigh. At least we taught the teenaged boy how to make his own ramen and nachos.

Are those bee ornaments I spy?

Thanks to you writing about pickety bits I now have cheese and crackers with olives and grape tomatoes for my third meal every day. Somehow I never get tired of that.

I love ice-cream(!!) and I make sure it is a daily part of my diet in the summer. Otherwise, a lot of salad eating too, but I want to find some new and different recipes (kinda getting tired of the same old ones). Currently, we have a βSpecial Weather Statementβ issued from Environment Canada for our first βheat waveβ of the year. It is 30 degrees Celsius (and it might get to 31), that is about 86 Fahrenheit. There is also info included on how to stay cool (I admit it- I am a snowflake and this is too hot!)

Hi Mavis, If you have an Aldi store in your area, or maybe going to one closest to you, I find this is the best store to stock up at……..
