Pizza Pizza $12
The good news is we found a pizza place. Or rather a small general store that sells pizza. General stores in tiny coastal towns are a major perk up here in Maine and we are so lucky to have one that’s not only reasonably priced, but one that’s close by as well. I have a sneaking suspicion that other than a couple of major stock up trips a year {I’m thinking quarterly, or if we’re lucky, twice a year} at a Market Basket or a Costco, we’ll probably be doing all our shopping there.
And I LOVE that. I love supporting small hometown businesses with just a handful of employees that know you by name and offer good products. Shops that have fair prices and forgo all the silly advertising and hoops the big box stores make you go through. It gives me hope. Hope that there are other people out there like me who have zero interest in playing the game. That there are people out there who want to live in a world without the noise, the fluff, the superficial and fakeness of it all. Where people are just easygoing and kind.
Sorry about that, I got sidetracked.
I think what I started to say was the good news is we found a pizza place… the bad news is it took us 3 days to eat the pizza because it was SO FREAKIN’ BIG. Next time I think we’ll order a small. 🙂
General Store $12.30 {missing from the picture are 2 pears and two tomatoes}
Big salad with tomatoes, goat cheese, green pepper, pickled beets, dried cranberries and sunflower seeds.
Big salad 2.0 – Tomatoes, pickled beets, peas, salami, goat cheese, dried cranberries and sunflower seeds.
The HH’s favorite – Pasta with Rao’s marinara sauce.
Dessert of the week: Upside Down Gingerbread Pear Cake. Absolutely perfect for this time of year.
Salmon dinner. The HH tried a new recipe and it was a big hit {let me know if you want the recipe}.
And last but not least, last night’s dinner: pickety bits on the dock. We had to bundle up a bit because it’s starting to get downright chilly around here. 🙂 Life is good!
How about YOU? What have you been eating lately? Are you craving Crock Pot meals and soups yet?
Have a wonderful Monday everyone,
~Mavis

We picked 75 lbs of apples last week, so I’ve been working on processing those. I made apple cinnamon pork loin, apple pancakes, a double batch of applesauce, and 72 apple cinnamon scones. I still need to make apple butter and a few pies to freeze.
We’ve definitely switched to comfort food as of this week since it finally got a little cooler. This week we’re having MD crab soup and roasted potatoes, lasagna with homemade noodles, bacon bean soup, etc.
Very jealous of your pizza access. We can’t get delivery here, and there was one place for pickup that just closed. I usually just make our own, but I haven’t had a chance to make pizza sauce yet this year.
Mavis Butterfield says
What variety of apples did you pick?
Mel says
Stayman apples. They’re an older variety, and they are our favorite because they store well and are just incredibly versatile. We usually pick closer to 100 lbs, but Maryland had a hard freeze in the spring, so 60% of the apple crop was destroyed, so there was very limited availability. The orchard where we normally go only had them available for picking one day this fall, so we went to a different one. Luckily, we didn’t need as many this year since I can’t make mini pies for all my students like I normally do.

That IS a big pizza! We tried a new (to us) pizza place here and ordered just one “party size” thinking it would feed our family of 2 adults and 3 kids, with maybe a couple slices leftover for one of us to eat the next day. The party size is a 20″ like the one in your picture. The pizza was amazing, but so filled with cheese and good toppings! I think we ate 1/4 of it before being full? Definitely kept us fed all week. Next time I think we’ll order the small too lol

Had a glass class tonight. Learned quite a bit. Should be able to start making night lights soon. Still picking tomatoes in the greenhouse

Salmon recipe please

I’m with you, but sadly we no longer have any locally owned grocery stores. So perturbed when I went to buy groceries this weekend at one of the big box stores, I’m going to return to ordering online and picking it up. Our high yesterday was 11 degrees and got 14ish inches of snow. Fingers crossed it made a significant dent on the fires around us.

Another vote for the salmon recipe!

Oh yum. Mavis, your pear gingerbread cake is my favorite fall recipe. Now that I’ve seen the photo today, it going to be a baking day.
Have you ever tried making it with apples or other fruit.
Mavis Butterfield says
I think I’ve tried it with apples before, but I like it with pears the best! 🙂 So good.

Hi Mavis!
I’m interested in hear more on how you would plan a quarterly shopping trip? Would you track what you ate? Would it just be for non perishables? I’ve been thinking about only going twice a year…..thoughts…..

I’ve been working on a pizza dough recipe that I can make in my bread machine. Every one I tried was too hard, too crunchy too doughy too much too little but we still had to eat the rejects. I saw somewhere where small size pizzas could be made on English muffins and that got me to thinking. Yeah why not? The recipe is found on 1840 Farm and it’s for English muffins. I make half the dough in English muffins and half the dough as a pizza crust and it’s pretty good. It’s doughy like a pan pizza or you can make it on a pizza stone for a thin crust pizza. I cut velveeta into thin strips and roll it into the dough. Because you just need more calories. I make egg mcmuffins out of the english muffin half of the dough and wrap and freeze them. You can nuke them in the microwave for a fast breakfast. Here’s the link to the dough: https://1840farm.com/2017/09/farmhouse-english-muffins/ I make mine in the dough setting of the bread machine
Lana says
We have used this pizza dough recipe for decades and it does great on the bread machine-
1 cup water
2 tablespoon oil
2 1/2 cups bread flour or all purpose
1 tablespoon yeast
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
Shari Harniss says
Thanks for the recipe, Lana. I’m going to give it a whirl this week!
