Big Purchase of the Week $5.11
Surprisingly, bananas are a little hard to come by at the General store. I’m always putting them on my list for my personal shopper and the HH only finds them about 25% of the time. Also, that little bin of lettuce, it’s the perfect amount for my 2 big salads a week.
General Store – Large salami and cheese sub to share $8.5o
Crazy good! And there’s even a little capicola in there for an extra kick.
Butternut squash ravioli from Costco. HOLY COW MAN… it was excellent {and we still have another container of the stuff!}.
The blue box. Why mess with childhood?
The HH cooks!
And I ate leftover potatoes for lunch the next day.
The HH also made the Copycat Panera tomato bisque soup recipe. It was soooooo good, I told him he should make it again this week. Have you tried it yet? Seriously, it takes just like Panera’s.
The Girl came with exotic gifts from afar…
- Fuji Apples – You can’t find them in these parts
- Giant Potatoes – See above
- Meyer Lemons – Seriously? See above
When The Girl makes dinner.
The HH had a special request for his famous meatballs {in Rao’s sauce of course}.
And last but not least, our turkey dinner from last night. I was planning on making a cranberry pineapple marshmallow salad, but totally forgot I needed to soak the cranberries overnight so we had to use the cranberry sauce out of a can and I immediately regretted it. Blech.
Also, I asked The Girl if she wanted any of the extra turkey or scalloped potatoes to take home and she was like, sure, I can take it all. 😉
Oh well. We’ve got another turkey breast in the freezer, and honestly, it makes me happy I’m sending her home with containers of food {she wanted the meatballs from the night before too!}.
Comfort food. It’s the best thing on earth.
How about YOU? Did you end up with many leftovers this Thanksgiving? Curious minds want to know.
Have a good one,
~Mavis

Mornin’, Miss Mavis –
Because of COVID, we did not host the big family Thanksgiving this year. And while it was just the 4 of us, we still cooked for a crowd. We had leftovers through lunch on Sunday and then last night I made tacos with the remaining turkey and mashed potatoes – they were sooooo good. The only thing we still have left is the orange jello Cool Whip dessert … and the Brussels sprouts stalk that I picked up at Trader Joe’s and forgot to cook. I guess it’s what’s for dinner tonight!
Have a great week!
Mavis Butterfield says
I miss those stalks of Brussel sprouts!!! They were so fun to buy.

We had a 23 lb turkey for two people (long story there), so we had more leftovers than usual, but I’ve already used them up. I made 4 pot pies to freeze (two using the leftover gravy and two using a cream-based sauce), and I made a giant batch of turkey noodle soup to freeze (our favorite cold and flu remedy). We used up the rest of the meat in gobbler sandwiches and turkey cranberry Monte Cristos.
I made slightly smaller versions of broccoli salad, macaroni and cheese, desserts, and stuffing, so we were able to eat those by Sunday. For lunch yesterday I mixed the leftover mashed potatoes with cheddar and egg and cooked them in the waffle iron, which was amazing.
It’s going to be an insane week at work, but I can’t wait until next weekend when I’ll have time to make Christmas cookies. Tonight, we’re doing takeout!
Laura L. says
Every single thing you mentioned sounds yummy especially the 4 pot pies. I love those but have never given one a try because I’m no good at making crust and I always wonder if I’d be able to make the broth (for lack of the correct word here) in good proportion with the veggies.

15 lb Turkey and small ham for three adults plus tiny sides of mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes and corn casserole. It was a carb load but worth it. Inventory this morning shows the corn casserole is gone. I made fish cakes on Saturday night with the mashed potatoes, the sweet potatoes were someone’s lunch. I made Turkey soup with some of the Turkey but still have almost half a breast left so might make Turkey salad today although we are all running out of steam for the Turkey. The leftover stuffing is going to become my son’s breakfast crisped in a pan and served under a fried egg. The leftover cranberry sauce I’m going to mix half and half with orange marmalade to make cranberry orange marmalade. I’ll probably freeze the gravy because it was a really good batch.

Although our gathering was smaller than usual, we still had my brother-in-law and his family here for five days. Needless to say, all the leftovers are gone. We had leftover turkey and all the fixings for a second day, then used the rest of the meat in a turkey noodle soup on Saturday. It didn’t take us long to plow through them all. I also ended up making my homemade potato rolls three times (a total of six dozen!) to get everyone their fill. Yikes!
Today I clean up the aftermath and start decorating for Christmas.
Linda T says
Any chance you’d share your recipe for potato rolls?
Kari says
Sure! https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/blog/2019/11/18/amish-dinner-rolls?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIv6_7g4Ws7QIVZxitBh3UbgPkEAAYASAAEgKyevD_BwE
I always rice my potatoes the day before, but any leftover mashed potatoes work, just be certain they aren’t too lumpy.
A T says
Made these yesterday, fantastic!
Thanks!

I don’t like turkey and since our daughter and her husband couldn’t come due to COVID, it was a much abbreviated version this year. A ham, green bean casserole, macaroni and cheese and rolls. After eating on it for three meals, I have the ham bone and leftover ham in the freezer where it will make an awesome ham and veggie soup. Not a big of waste as I threw the last bit of macaroni and a few rolls into the yard where we have an abundance of birds, squirrels and chipmunk that enjoy the leftovers.

We were missing our Maryland crew since we all were at the beach together in early November for my birthday. Our 21.5 lb turkey left us with plenty after feeding seven of us. I also did not do well adjusting to preparing smaller amounts of dressing, sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes and, really…how do you make smaller amounts of pecan, apple, pumpkin and buttermilk pies? I did not make the chocolate pies, though, since we had petit fours. Everyone has their favorite. The buttermilk recipe makes 3 pies so I gave each of the yard guys a pie. Hopefully my HH will finish off the pumpkin pie today. We had plenty of leftovers after everyone took home extras; it makes me happy to know they count on taking home leftovers of my cooking. Mavis, I made your turkey soup with the tomatoes and chiles and it was delicious! Even my husband liked it and soup is not on his favorite foods list.
Mel says
On years where we do several types of pies, I do miniature versions–anything from bite-sized to 7″ in diameter depending on the type of pie and how many people like it.

I had thawed the turkey but then my husband ended up in the hospital with pneumonia Thursday morning. We had already decided no big dinner but I was going to still cook up the turkey and instead a friend sent over more than enough of the full Thanksgiving spread for the kids and I and took home my turkey. She roasted it up and brought it back. So we still have leftovers that we are working thru. I think some sort of turkey casserole will be on the menu tonight.
Thankfully hubby only had to stay in the hospital 2 nights but we are all in quarantine for another 10 days.
Mavis Butterfield says
Glad your husband is back home and that was super nice of your neighbor. 🙂

I had a 14lb turkey and have a wing and half breast left. Also have some mashed potatoes, a pie plate worth of stuffing, a few cups of green beans, and about 2 cups of gravy left. I ate all the cranberry sauce because I love it in oatmeal. We are taking a break from the leftovers tonight and tomorrow night will hopefully be the last of them.
I have never been good at using up Thanksgiving leftovers because my mom use to just throw everything away after the meal, we never ate leftovers or even had them in the house growing up. The first time my hubby saw me toss leftovers after a meal it started a great debate, so I keep them for him and try to repurpose them into another meal. There are a lot of things ‘leftover’ I won’t eat still, but the hubby is happy to eat them.

We always have a blue box in the pantry. Not many leftovers here. Martha Stewart published Rao’s sauce recipe way back before they were famous. I feel rich every time I see it in my recipe files.

THANK YOU

Ooooh, can you share the recipe?
Annette says
Google is your friend 😉
Laura L. says
I just checked out the prices of Rao’s sauce around here and they’re super expensive. Any places that have them for less, I wonder. Amazon wants around $11.00 to 12.50 per jar!

If you have a Natural Grocers where you live, they will have it on sale December 12-24 for $4.95.

We had our usual twice baked potatoes, collards, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and turkey. For dessert I made ice cream with homegrown bananas and pumpkins , it was delicious! Each family member posted their meals in a group text so it was fun to see what everyone ate. Mavis you have to carefully read the ingredients on the butternut squash ravioli, there is one ingredient that will crack you up! I agree the ravioli is delicious and I think this unusual ingredient is why!
Mrs. M. says
I just had to Google it!
Hilarious!
Diana says
That must be why it is so delicious right?

Amaretti Cookies. Wahooo!

We had family here, 17 in all, which is smaller than normal. We had 2 turkeys, 2 smoked turkeys, ham, duck, and the regular sides. Company was here Wed through Sat. We still have a TON of leftovers. Hubby is making turkey broth to freeze, turkey soup, also to freeze, and we are working on the rest of the leftovers. I’m already planning Christmas and New Year Eve menus. Christmas will be just my son and his family that lives close to us. New Year’s will likely be just us. Thanksgiving is my biggest and favorite Holiday. It was a blast! I should share my green bean casserole recipe and cranberry jello recipe with you. They are really good, and family favorites now! I make them both lower-carb since we are eating Keto when not Thanksgiving.
A says
yes please to the lower carb recipes! Thanks!

Just two of us this year. Got a 13 lb hen turkey from costco. I scaled down the portion size of mashed potatoes, and stuffing and cranberry whip cream salad. Didn’t make my home made rolls or yams this year. Just one pumpkin pie, a mini berry pie, and pecan “pie” shortbread. I REALLY wish my husband liked soups because I would like to make Mavis’s turkey wild rice soup recipe. I do love left over turkey sandwiches so been eating those.
