Before we moved, I did a giant stock up trip to Costco and not only filled the cart with essentials, but also some of our favorite foods. Or rather what I thought were our favorite foods.
I’m not sure when the last time we had taquitos was, but when I made them last week the HH and I both decided that it was The Girl and Monkey Boy who really loved taquitos, not us. 😉 Getting older and cooking for two is weird sometimes, especially when you realize some of the things you’ve been buying all these years were for the kids… and not yourself.
Some days I look forward to eating, and other days I look in the cupboards and grab the first thing I see because I could totally care less and wish there was just some sort of meal replacement pill I could take instead.
Our lovely neighbors stopped by with a pie plate of mini cheesecakes and puffs on Christmas Eve. The HH was in the middle of laying tile in the entryway and I was standing at the kitchen sink in my flannel pajamas {so clearly I wasn’t going to be the one to answer the door because I don’t know them that well} and well, to make a long story short, Lucy ran to the door and stepped in the mortar the HH had just put down and it was total chaos as he tried to pick her up as fast as possible.
The HH couldn’t open the front door {because he had just laid the tile right there} and so he had to go out our messy garage and talk to our neighbors in the driveway while I had Lucy in the tub trying to get the cement off her paws before anything dried.
It was hilarious and embarrassing all at the same time and I’m pretty sure the neighbors think we are a bunch of nuts now. Note to self: Next Christmas Eve, wear real clothing and be more prepared for visitors. 😉
Christmas Day. We had apple popovers for breakfast and then a ginormous platter of pickety bits for linner. We made some phone calls, watched 2 movies and then went to bed early. 🙂 It was quiet and calm and a lovely way to spend the day. And I suspect New Year’s Eve will be pretty much the same.
How about YOU? How was YOUR holiday? Do you still have a fridge full of leftovers, or are they long gone? Curious minds want to know.
Have a great Monday everyone,
~Mavis

We are still eating leftovers from Christmas! Yum… those cheesecakes from your neighbor look so good to me. How do you slice your apples so thin for the pickety bits?
Lana says
I hear you on the taquitos. I wonder if they changed them because I don’t remember them being gross like they are now. We are in the same food rut and I have declared this week eat out week.
Heidi P says
I think I might steal your idea and declare our week “Eat Out Week”. I’ll tell my family Lana said so!

For the first time in years, it was just my immediate family (five of us) for Christmas dinner. I really did try to scale back on food, yet it still seems I prepared for an army. We are still eating turkey leftovers, as well as pulled pork from Christmas Eve. I don’t know how I will manage if it’s ever just the two of us.
Your Christmas sounds relaxing and very enjoyable. Wishing you a happy, healthy New Year!!

As a two year alumni of the “just the two of us” club now, you just eat a lot of leftovers. My husband says the leftovers taste better than the first serving. I just try to remake leftovers, last nights burrito filling becomes taco salads the next day. If you figure out how to cook for just two, please come back and let us know. Lol

We still have some leftovers but not terrible. I did lasagna for Christmas Eve and ham and the trimmings for Christmas Day. I also struggle with cooking just for the 2 of us (we had 5 kids and the last just started college). It’s weird…just sayin! I digress. Anyhow. The lasagna was finished last night as leftovers and I have turned some of the h into split pea soup (thanks for the post, I altered my recipe a little based on your post). Any remaining h leftovers will meet the freezer this evening and the fridge will reset! Ha ha

It was so warm on Christmas Eve, we were able to have a socially distant gathering in the driveway at my in-laws’, and enjoy the Feast of the Seven Fishes outside, in Maine, in December. We didn’t open gifts (it was dark) but did exchange them. My parents visited over the weekend, and we opened presents in the driveway. On Christmas, I made a rib roast, scalloped potatoes with herbes de province and goat cheese, popovers, and broccoli. We still have plenty of leftovers, and lots of cookies, which makes the kid happy.

That Christmas episode of you in your jammies, dog paw in mortar, and door blocked off sounds like a Chevy Chase movie…hilarious. I live by myself and am in my jammies on Saturdays a lot. I might need to get dressed. Lol. No leftovers. About to make some homemade chicken noodle soup with carrots and peas. Can’t wait!

I’ve been thinking that Mavis’ life would make a great tv series! It is always positive, always kind, but would take us from tears to fits of laughter in every episode. But who would be smart or quirky enough to play Mavis? (And ‘quirky’ is a compliment!).
Carolina Cooper says
I would say the only one qualified to play Mavis would be Mavis herself!

All 5 kids at home for Christmas but no visitors, so it was unusual for us. We finished the leftovers this weekend. And just found a dish I had put in the freezer because I had made it ahead of time. Guess we’ll eat that for NYs

I’m actually kind of bummed that the leftovers are almost gone. We have a Christmas Eve buffet and Christmas beef roast. The last of the garden jalapenos and cubanelles were cheesy-stuffed for the buffet. Today I’m breaking down the ham for new meals including pea soup.
I recommend the Costco mini-quiche as a replacement for taquitos–sorry they didn’t work out.

Snort. Only you, Mavis! I served a delicious but oddly unpopulated Christmas dinner with the old ones and one daughter who was able to quarantine before she came home (yay!). NYE will be early bird dinner again with my elderly Covid pod, then home to my dog and guitars. I’m trying hard not to complain about a pretty solitary, quiet NYE, and count my blessings that I get to share an early dinner with my parents and elderly cousin who I am fortunate enough to still have here earthside.
Linda Practical Parsimony says
I was ill feeling before Christmas and a fever on Christmas day and since. So, there was no cooking and no leftovers. I can picture the chaos and door answering.
Julie Radford says
Hope you feel better soon, sending good wishes your way x

We turned the leftovers into cottage pie yesterday. We are in the part of life where it isn’t so much the food that the kids liked but discovering the foods again that we the parents liked but we stopped making since there were 6 kids and only 2 of us. Now we are down to only one picky teen who can make his own food, the rest of those at home are adults who discovered lots of different foods that they like after their college years.

Here in Southern CA- we are on a stay at home order with no gatherings outside of who lives with us…so my son came over (after I required him to have a negative COVID test) and we barbecued filets with homemade French fries, fresh baked bread and blueberry pie. A quiet day, followed by the “Call the Midwife” Holiday special…my favorite.
NYE will be just the two of us. My husband just said to me…”you either die of COVID or kill each other” He has a dark sense of humor that man…but we are doing pretty well for 10 months of basically a stay at home order. Good thing, because today I discovered that my passport is missing from my last March 2020 (week before COVID shut down) international trip…uh oh…

I get as much enjoyment reading the comments as I do reading the blog. Yes, Mavis a movie or series would be awesome!!!!! Hey Ree Drummond did it and look at her now (as if they didn’t already have money). I love reading your posts and look forward to them every day. Hey dividing your yearly expenditures on food into twelve and then four looks like One Hundred Dollars a Week! LOL I just moved in with a daughter and her 3 children so my life has changed a LOT after a divorce 27 years ago. You think it’s hard to cook for two? try cooking for ONE! LOL I love your posts…don’t ever stop!

what is that delicious looking bread with I think cranberries and nuts? Recipe please.
