Hannaford $19.25
I must be getting old because $4+ for a bag of grapes seems high {even if they were on sale}. $4 a pint for ice cream though…. totally reasonable.
Costco $44
Thank goodness for Costco eye exams and inexpensive lenses. And enough common sense to walk into the store without a cart. Nothing to see here Bob, I’m just here for the salmon thank you very much. 6 pounds for $44, I thought that was a pretty good deal.

If you have a big family, or your’e looking to make a boatload of meals all at once {or in batches} One Hundred Dollars a Month reader Mel wrote an AWESOME post a few months ago on how she made 4 months worth of freezer meals. You can find her post HERE.

I’m really enjoying your pics of your daily eats. I hope you keep doing that; it’s given me some good ideas, and it’s helpful to see pics from someone who seems to have a pretty healthy perspective when it comes to food and eating:).
Lynne says
Just curious – have you told your neighbors about your blog? What is their reaction to your taking photos of the food you are eating? It all does look delicious, by the way.
Suzanne Shaw says
Hi Mavis – I stopped buying the Costco frozen salmon because I can never – EVER! – cook it right. What exactly do you do, because the photo looks delicious.
Mavis Butterfield says
350 degrees, about 20-25 minutes. We like to add a splash of lemon juice, soy sauce and sprinkle with brown sugar. 🙂
Suzanne Shaw says
Do you cook it frozen? Or do you thaw it 1st?
Mavis Butterfield says
I thaw it overnight in the fridge.
Lunch Lady says
Me too. Watched a show on farm raised salmon, the farmers feed it special food to turn it orange and to make them grow really fast. The farm-raised tastes fishier to me. I live on the Oregon coast so I’m spoiled by fresh seafood.
Lunch Lady says
OOPS! meant to put that comment under Alice’s!
Alice says
I won’t buy the Kirkland salmon because it’s farm raised. We want wild salmon.
Laura says
Completely agree. Plus, it is Atlantic Salmon. Why in the world would I want that when I live on the West Coast?
Claudia says
Living on Vancouver Island we sure don’t eat any farm raised fish. Glad to see you don’t either.
Yvette says
Agreed. Farmed seafood is NOT okay.
Mary says
I agree, I like seeing the pics of what you eat (it is kinda strange in a voyeuristic kind of way LOL)! Thanks for sharing! I might start doing that too…maybe if I did that for a week or two and look back I’d see where I’m making mistakes in my choices. I remember watching this show on idk some fyi channel or something where they put everything this woman ate on a table to see how white/brown everything was and point out her food intake mistakes. I mean, I’d hate to see everything I eat spread out on a table on tv ;o)
Tracy W says
At Costco, in the same section you find the Salmon is individually sealed cod fillets, they are amazing!
Mavis Butterfield says
Thank you!
Rita says
I thought you didn’t like fish & seafood Ms. Mavis. Have you developed a liking for it now that you’re in Maine?
Mavis Butterfield says
I suppose I’m going to have to get used to it if I’m going to live on an island someday. 🙂
Tanya says
Try the Starbucks English Breakfast tea latte with soy milk, it’s delicious! It’s like a London Fog except English Breakfast tea bags and simple syrup instead of vanilla syrup. It is caffeinated so bring your own decaf tea bags.
Katherine says
We don’t buy or eat any farm raised fish. Costco carries fresh caught sockeye that is delicious. I usually cook it in a stainless fry pan with just a touch of extra virgin olive oil, turning it only once. Yum!
Cynthia says
I can’t believe you buy farmed fish. You should be able to get fresh Atlantic salmon where you live.
judy says
We don’t eat farm raised fish or sea food either…….
rj abrams says
Looks like you had some tuna on crackers in the last photo, and then similar “crackers” with your Cuppa. So did you have tuna on cookies, or crackers with your Cuppa? Either way, it looks yummy, and what kind of crackers/cookies were they?
Michelle says
I will not eat farmed fish either. We are spoiled living here in the mountains of SW Washington. If we’re out of (wild) salmon, a nice, fat, lake trout on the Traeger will suffice! Nothing tastes better than cooking your own catch!
Claudia says
Hey Mavis just a word to the wise. Don’t buy/eat Atlantic Salmon as it is farm raised in pens in the ocean being fed pellets and causing damage just to mention lice that attach to the young wild sockeye. They are destroying our wonderful wild stocks.
Gina says
Mavis, my Costco sells Wild Alaskan salmon frozen in individual packets just like the farmed raised in case you wish to try. Also, love that you have “become” a social butterfly. I think it’s funny not to think of you always being a social butterfly when you think of how many people you interact with here on the internet on a daily basis! Btw, great food.
Susie Janov says
Gina, I also buy the wild salmon at Costco. Surprisingly, it’s less expensive than the farm-raised! But even if it cost more, that would be what I would buy.
debbie in alaska says
I was hoping folks might mention some of the issues with farmed salmon and gently encourage you to look into buying wild. Maybe consider a quick google search and then decide for yourself.
Sue says
I noticed in your photos there’s not a lot of bread.
Have you given that up? My total weakness.
Mavis Butterfield says
Nope. Just an off week for bred with no trips to the bakery I guess.
Stacie says
That chocolate cake looks decadent! Do you have the recipe?
Linda Practical Parsimony says
Farmed fish of all kinds has more Omega 6. so I do not eat it. I refuse to eat never-frozen salmon because it contains parasites or something…lol tired. Freezing will kill whatever it is. So will heat, but salmon cannot be cooked at that high heat.
