A few days ago we stopped by Moose Crossing Garden Center in Waldoboro, Maine to pick up some seed garlic for the garden and luckily, they had just gotten their garlic bulbs in so I was able to get what I needed before they were all gone.
Just like earlier this spring, when there was a huge run on vegetable seeds, things like garlic and flower bulbs are now selling out quickly and well, if you snooze you loose. {Botanical Interests is almost already sold out of their garlic already too!}. It’s crazy!
If you’ve never planted garlic before and you are thinking about doing it this fall, I wrote a quick little tutorial post about it a few years ago, Planting Garlic in the Fall For a Summer Harvest in case you’re interested.
I ended up buying 3 bulbs of red Russian garlic and 3 bulbs of German extra hearty. If all goes as planned, that should give us about 42 bulbs of garlic next summer. Nice! 🙂
But back to our visit to Moose Crossing Garden Center in Waldoboro, Maine.
In a nutshell, if you are looking to buy some mums for your fall garden, Moose Crossing Garden Center in Waldoboro, Maine is the place to go. Just look at all those mums! They’re everywhere. Outside, in the greenhouses, alongside the greenhouses, in the shop… it’s nuts.
And their greenhouses… holy canolies! There are FILLED to the brim with SO MANY flowers. {Most of the nurseries around here are looking pretty sparse so late in the season, but not Moose Crossing}.
So many plants!
I loved these limelight hydrangeas! I might have to find a place to plant a row of those next summer, they’re gorgeous.
They even sell rhododendrons {although the selection isn’t quite as big as it is in the Northwest}. Ha!
And they had a great selection of fall veggie starts too {kale, lettuce, broccoli, cabbage brussels sprouts… you name it, they had it.}.
I love it when a garden center has garden carts instead of grocery shopping carts, don’t you? I only wish I had found this place earlier in the season because their prices we so reasonable {and much lower than a lot of other garden centers we’ve been to}.
Oh well, at least we know where it is now so we’ll be able to go back next spring and get our starts.
Moose Crossing Garden Center in Waldoboro, Maine… they’ve got everything you need for your garden. And a lot of mums too. 🙂
It’s just another reason to visit Mid Coast Maine.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone,
~Mavis

I might plant some if I can find the starts. I’m in the process of moving my garden closer to my house due to an overwhelming attack on my existing garden by moles this summer. I think after 8 years the hardware cloth in my raised beds has broken down allowing moles to get my veggies.
I’ve never planted in the fall so I’m excited to see what I can grow.
Mums…..I thought they were only a fall flower but I’ve had them growing and flowering in my front flower bed all summer since planting them last fall. I’m shocked at how well they’ve done thru the hot hot summer here in the PNW. The greenery is beautiful.

What a beautiful garden center. I plant garlic every year – – – such an easy and useful crop, and since it is harvested in June, you can plant another crop for later. I like planting green beans to follow garlic. This year I am planting:
Inchelium Red Garlic – 1/4 pound
Music Garlic – 1/4 pound
Romanian Red Garlic – 1/4 pound
Kettle River Garlic – 1/4 pound
I have grown Inchelium and Music in the past, and will be trying the Romanian and Kettle River for the first time this year.

I plant German hardneck garlic–we like scapes. I think it’s similar to Music? Last year my online seller cancelled my order at the last minute, so I planted bulbs from the farmer’s market. It was my best garlic year ever. (Probably because I planted in October and used winter row covers–some years I’ve planted in February.)

Have you ever tried growing garlic as a perennial? My aunt has a garlic bed and it self seeds every year.

No I haven’t. What state is she in? That might make a difference.

She’s in northern Wisconsin. It’s zone 4a.
