A big thank you to everyone who chimed in about my herb dilemma yesterday. After reading all your comments I decided to definitely NOT move the mint next to the greenhouse.
Instead I went ahead and turned our old half oak barrel over {it had a few potato plants growing in it} and emptying some of the dirt out. At first I was thinking about removing all of the dirt and lining the barrel with landscape fabric.
But in the end I figured I’ll probably just be moving the mint in a few years again, and decided to take my chances and not worry about lining the barrel.
After all, how much can one little mint plant grow in a year anyway. Right?

Your mint plant will do fine in just a little bit of dirt and you really do not need to line your barrel with anything. I took a small plant and plant and planted it right in the middle of a good size galvanized bucket/ pot and it has taken over the whole thing and that was the beginning to middle of the summer. I am not sure how to attach a picture to the comments or I would send you a pic of how my mint in doing.

To be on the safe side, I would put a piece of plastic or trash bag under the barrel. I had a horseradish plant in a large plastic pot with teeny drain holes. For 2 years the plant didn’t do much of anything because I had it sitting on concrete. Then I moved it next to the deck. Turned into Amazon plant. Found out when I went to move it that the thing had sent tiny roots through the drain holes and grew larger roots another 3 FEET into the ground. We dug out as much as we could, then moved. Hope it didn’t grow back for the new owner….
