Mrs. HB flew into our little airport on Wednesday night and we greeted her with an ice cold diet coke {her favorite beverage} when we got to the car. I say we, because the HH was the chauffeur. I dislike driving immensely, have I told you that before?
We stayed up really late {10:30!} yakking away and we were so tired the next morning, that we got a bit of a late start. The original plan was to go to the Sheepscot General Store for a sticky bun, and then head to Longfellow’s Greenhouse to load up on plants.
But, well… we made a few extra stops along the way.
First, we stopped to see a bit of road kill. {We passed a dead porcupine and Mrs. HB wanted to get a quill from the porcupine but changed her mind after seeing it’s bloated body. She was worried it might have rabies. I KID YOU NOT! This really happened. I took the photo for proof.}
Of course we were only able to spot the dead porcupine alongside the road because she was looking at everything along the route and driving 25 in a 45 zone. I kept telling her to SPEED UP… YOUR’E DRIVING LIKE AN OLD LADY, but she wouldn’t listen.
She wanted to take in the scenery.
So I actually took the wheel.
I actually drove. That’s how slow she was driving.
But in hindsight, had we not stopped to see the porcupine on the side of the road and turned down the wrong street as we were leaving, we wouldn’t have stumbled upon the little roadside stand selling maple sugar and dilly beans.
There was also a freezer full of meat at the little stand along the road, but since we knew we’d probably be gone all day, we didn’t buy any.
We also passed a little Amish stand and turned around for that too {and bought a loaf of fresh bread, cookies, pie fillings and some pot holders}. {We missed out on the pies though because those are only offered on Fridays and Saturdays}.
The next stop was the general store where we bought vegetable starts and sticky buns and then ate them in the car because I refused to sit outside at the picnic tables.
I was worried there might be ticks in the grass {it was about 6″ high} and Mrs. HB thought I was being irrational and then we started laughing so hard that she spilled her water and sticky bun all over the seat of the car and then she had to sit in her wet toddler plants for the rest of the drive to the greenhouse.
There was also an incident with the toilet at the general store {but we don’t need to talk about that}.
Then as we were getting ready to leave the general store, I remembered there was a place down the road that sold fresh Greek yogurt {Mrs. HB’s favorite} so we stopped for a tub of that too.
And then as we were leaving the Greek yogurt place, she spotted a sign for Alpaca crafts and well, oh course, WE HAD TO STOP THERE TOO.
The little shop was incredibly cute and the store owner was as nice as could be and you’ll never guess what Mrs. HB bought.
2 hand knit scarves {and some baby mittens too.} Which was a good thing, because according to Mrs. HB, one can never have enough scarves {even if they already have 102 of them}.
Well, we finally made it to the greenhouse. I picked up 2 wisteria {purple}, to hibiscus {pink} and a hanging flower basket that I plan to transfer to another container.
And after that, it was off to Red’s to get her seafood fix.
Mrs. HB says she was to eat seafood EVERYDAY she’s here. And well, I’m going to make her dreams come true.
On the list of things she wants to try:
Lobster RollScallops- Clams
- Oysters on the half shell {GAG}
- Haddock
- Seafood Chowder
2 down, 4 to go. So if you know of any great seafood places here in Mid-Coast Maine… please let us know. We’re up for anything.
Have a good one,
~Mavis

Wow…may the adventures begin! Sounds like a fun time you two gals are having….sounds like when a group of my friends go to a gals home in the mountains. It’s a 4 hour trip, but takes us about 8 hrs to get there…due to stops here and there along the way. Once there, we take turns with the cooking and cleaning of dishes. We works on our creative projects and laugh and talk all day…sometimes staying in our PJ’s. We work on quilts, rug hooking, crochet, knit, and rug braiding. Oh so much fun. I have missed it since the pandemic, but have high hopes to go road tripping in the future.
Have a fun time together!!
Katie says
Wow, seems like y’all really had a boring day. I was really hoping y’all would do more things so you could talk about them on the blog. 😉
DYING about the porcupine.

Not sure if you’re anywhere near Portland, but I thought Duck Fat was totally worth the hype. Wow. Also in Portland, Micucci’s Grocery store has awesome Italian groceries, but the highlight is the pizza they sell in the back — SO GOOD!! It’s Sicilian slab pizza, so the crust is thick but light, like a biscuit. I’m usually a thin-crust kind of gal, but this was so different and heavenly.
Several years ago, we went to Portland for the day and did a Whoopie Pie “crawl.” We walked our way around the city and tried whoopie pies at all the bakeries. It wasn’t as obscene as it sounds since we’d split one pie (often pretty small) between my husband, three kids and me, but it was a really fun was to explore the city. (The clear winner was Cranberry Island Kitchens, but I don’t think that’s around anymore, alas).
Melissa A Schulze says
I’m so sad about Cranberry Island Kitchen closing. Totally agree about Duck Fat.
Tammy says
Sounds like you’re having a blast!
Mrs. HB says
We are !! Ms. Mavis and her HH are the most gracious hosts! And of course Ms. Lucy keeps showing me how much she has missed me as well ! She can’t get enough lovin’ from me !!!
Daria says
Damariscotta River Grill has amazing food and adult beverages (including, but not limited to, oysters on the half shell) but is on the pricey side. However it is clean and trustworthy. In this age, you want to make a reservation.

The porcupine! I feel like Mrs HB is my soul sister.
Mrs. Hillbilly says
And the REAL reason I didn’t get my porcupine quill was that I was afraid if I pulled one out, the thing would have exploded !!! It was soooooo bloated ! And that my soul sister I would have never lived down!!! My dear friend Ms. Mavis would have never let me back in her car !!! She said so and also that she would have asked the lady, that was outside her house watching us, to hose me down! But I did get a close up picture to show the family!!!
I will see if she can add it to my reply tomorrow. She is already asleep.
Mavis Butterfield says
No. I will absolutely not be putting an up close photo of a dead porcupine on the blog.
Maxine says
“If you give Mrs. HB and Mavis a cookie…”. Just like book. Fun adventures ensue. Lol. Have fun!
Christie says
You sound like two teenagers on their first solo road trip! So.much.fun!!! Enjoy the rest of your time together!
Joely says
You two look like you are having a blast. I can’t believe Mrs. HB likes Moxie!
Wendy M says
I have missed yours and Mrs. Hillbilly’s adventures so much! I was so devastated when you moved to the East coast because of the bond of your friendship. I know that probably sounds silly but it felt like a great loss to me at the time. I know that those kinds of friendships are rare indeed so I didn’t like seeing your separation. Life must go on though, I suppose, and I know you are finally in your happy place!
I can’t wait to read more about your visit together!
Mrs.Hillbilly says
True friendship doesn’t let a little somthin’ like miles come between them . In a way it brought us closer I think . Appreciate each other more .
Rachel says
Everything you did made a great adventure! Now, however, I have to ask, do you know much about wisteria? Yes, it’s gorgeous in the spring, but it is categorized as an invasive plant. I remember an aunt planting it, and I remember the same aunt pulling it back out not too many years later.
Mrs . HB says
Being from the south , there was beautiful smelling Wisteria everywhere ! I personally LOVE it ! But learned early never plant it near a tree, it will choke it too death !

Dying laughing while reading this…..dont get me started on the skid marks in the porcupine photo!
Mrs. Hillbilly says
I’ve noticed these skid marks everywhere and have commented on them to Ms. Mavis no less that a dozen times ! What’s up with them ? Seriously I have never seen soooooo many!
Vivian says
So. Much. Fun.! I wish I was with you! I would love to see the potholders Mrs. Hillbilly bought. And absolutely LOVE her yard photos!
Mrs. HB says
Thanks ! I have loved working in my garden over the 15 years that we have lived there . It along with my chickens are my happy place ! Will ask Ms. Mavis to post the pot holders . I am keeping on and giving the other to my Mom.
Pj Truman says
OMG Mrs. Hillbilly… how we’ve missed you! Hope you two have a blast together and don’t get arrested. Driving too slow can get you stopped by the Police!
Mrs. HB says
But how then do I take in the scenery? ms Mavis has take. Over the driving but in my humble opinion goes too fast for me to soak up the scenery!!
Heidi P says
Mrs H….what a crack up! When our daughter was young she’d make us repeatedly circle back if there was roadkill. She loved looking and seeing what it was. I will never understand the interest but it provides a great chuckle.
You ladies keep doing you! You’re a refreshing break from my mundane life:)
Gigi says
You might need to start keeping a cooler and in the trunk for the road trip food finds. My aunt permanently keeps one in her trunk for the summer.
Cheryl says
Good friends are hard to come by. You both are lucky to have such a friendship. 🙂

For oysters, head to Shuck Station in Newcastle.

I just love this blog! Today I got to go on a road trip that was fun in a crazy, girl-friend kinda way. And in my home state! When I moved away from Greene, ME (first to PA, then to OH) I left my best friend and almost sister in Norway, ME. We have continued our friendship for over 50 years – trips to Myrtle Beach, the Poconos, various places in Florida, and visits at home. I miss her even more as I read your blog, but know we’ll see each other soon. Good friendships don’t die unless you let them.
Thanks so much, Mavis and Mrs. HB! You made my day.
Mrs.HB says
Awe……. you brought a tear to my eye!
Nancy says
Damariscotta oysters just may be the best in the country. Check out Schooner Bay for a nice outdoor location to eat them with a lot of other options too.
Julie says
Soul sisters indeed! HOW FUN!!!!
Stacie says
Sounds like a fun adventure!!! What is a Diet Moxie Mrs HB has??? They don’t sell that down here in the south.
Mrs. HB says
Apparently it is “ America’s oldest soda” and is here in Maine . My HB Hubby told me that and learned it off the American Pickers TV show . How funny is that !!
Sandra says
I WAS wondering what dilly beans were, but then the story about the porcupine made me laugh so hard! You two are a hoot together and I enjoy reading about all of your fun adventures!
Mrs. HB says
I have never had dilly beans myself, But they are a pickled green bean . Soooo if you like strong dill pickles , you’d love dilly beans .
