I have been watching programs on PBS and there was this snippet where they asked kids what their favorite holiday was and why. The Majority of the answers was Christmas because of all the presents they get. Now don’t get me wrong when I was a kid that was a big deal BUT my parents were on the low income level and our gifts were things we needed with an occasional special gift. New PJ’s on Christmas Eve that my mother MADE was very exciting. Now that I am older I just don’t get why HUMANS have to corrupt “Christmas” with all the commercialism. I believe this teaches the younger generation to be greedy, selfish, slothful and envious of their peers. I do not buy into the commercialism I make all the gifts for my children and grandchildren and even then it bothers me that they expect Gifts. So this year I am writing a note to go with all the homemade gifts about the simple meaning of Christmas and plan to eventually eliminate the gift giving at Christmas. I will try to extol the meaning of the holiday and get them to understand kindness and giving of oneself to others of the world.

My mom makes some of the Christmas gifts. Those handmade things are the things I can hang on the walls, use in the kitchen, etc. I hope to have them for many years to come, They are the lasting gifts for me.

I use beer boxes that come with dividers to store Christmas ornaments!

Have you bought a cactus yet? I ask because I was gifted a little jade plant start from a friend a few years ago that was having money troubles. That little two petaled jade plant has grown four fold already, and I love looking at it every day. It was such a thoughtful gift given from from the heart and with it I discovered that I really like succulent plants. This year I bought a little Hawthorne Zebra at the Biltmore house gardens one afternoon, and most recently I bought a beautiful Christmas cactus. All are doing well and all offer a more sculptural beauty than typical leafy houseplants, you know? Please show us your cactus photos if you get one!

Laura Z (or anyone with knowledge of succulents). This spring I bought 4 little plants to put in a hollowed out rock on my front porch. Different shapes and sizes–they must really like it there because they have grown like crazy and are no long the cute little blobs they were before-in fact they are growing up and over and out of the rock. Can I trim them back? I’ve never had anything other than hens and chicks and these things have gone bonkers!!!
