This past week was pretty low key in the meal department.
We did a lot of meal prep last week so there were leftovers we were able to enjoy, plus we {or rather the HH} made a few meals that we were able to enjoy over several days.
I’ve also been eating a ton of beans and rice lately {one of top 3 favorite meals} as a way to use up the 10 million jars of salsa that are still on the canning cupboard shelves.
Homemade lasagna {made by my husband}. It was fantastic!
So was the potato soup he made. These days he seems to be cooking once a week so I try to make sure there are at least 2 different meals on his list. 😉
I made a batch of morning glory muffins {and tucked half of them away in the freezer}.
And for Easter dinner we enjoyed turkey, sweet potatoes and peas. But the exciting part {food wise} last week was the sweet deals I got at Shaw’s.
Shaws: Milk $4.14
Shaw’s is running a deal right now that if you buy $50 or more of select gift cards you get a $10 off coupon for your next order {or groceries}.
I bought a $50 gift card to Lowe’s {which we’ll use this summer} and a gallon of milk. The milk was $4.14 {I don’t count the gift card because it’s money we would have spent at that store anyway}.
And sure enough, at the bottom of my receipt there was a $10 off coupon to use on my next order.
Shaws $5.11
I then used the coupon for the following deal:
$1.94 {2} pineapples $0.97 each w/digital coupon
$1.77 mozzarella cheese $1.77 w/digital coupon
$3.42 {6} Bird’s Eye Vegetables $0.57 each w/digital coupon
$2.99 celery hearts {crazy price!}
$4.99 {32 ounces} Ricotta Cheese
—————
$15.11
-$10.00 coupon
————
$5.11 after deals/coupons
I also purchased another $50 gift card to Lowe’s and received another $10 off my next purchase coupon which I’ll need to use within 7 days. The way I see it, it’s kind of silly not to get the Lowe’s gift cards especially when I know we’ll be shopping there within the next month or two.
$20 worth of “free” groceries? You bet I’ll take them. 😉
How about YOU? Did you find any deals this week? And seriously, don’t you think $2.99 for celery is nuts?
Have a great Monday everyone,
~ Mavis

Mavis!
What a great deal!!

The gift card purchase is a great idea! Our Safeway does a similar promotion but it’s $5 on $50, however gift card purchases are excluded. Bummer!
Nancy Settel says
Wow milk sure is high in Maine. We pay at Aldi’s (for a gallon) $2.12 a gallon here in Delaware. Yep celery has been crazy prices lately.
Mel says
I didn’t find any awesome deals, but I managed to make pumpkin muffins that were egg free, dairy free, and gluten free and still very good, so I’m calling that a win.
Amanda says
That IS a win! Congrats!

Lidl had a gift card promotion back in Nov and Dec and Hubby and I were able to do it twice each for a total of $40 free groceries. I am hoping they repeat this around Mother’s and Father’s Day. This morning in my email I had a $2 off $10 at Publix this week. I’ll take it! $2 is $2! If we shop on Wednesday this week on senior day we will 5% off our total ,too.
Ashley Bananas says
That’s a great way to utilize the gift card promotion. I haven’t done a ton of grocery shopping this past week except for some odds and ends. We went to a friends for Easter and I brought a dessert and side. It was a nice day. It felt good not to have to make a hundred things.

Great deals! I do think $2.99 for celery is nuts! Last week I purchased a head of cauliflower for $3.12 which seemed high but then I saw a comment on a thrifty site on Facebook showing that a head of cauliflower was over $12! I guess I’ll take $3.12.
Last week I purchased 2 hams on special- Cooks shank portion bone in for under $1 per pound. I planned to use 1 for Easter and one for later…and then my husband announced he wanted a spiral ham… it was too late to go to Costco so I went to Albertsons and had to spent $42 for an 11 pound ham…you can bet we are eating every last bit of that ham! So now I have 2 extra hams for future meals…

That’s an awesome deal! My mom buys gift cards when the local Kroger affiliate has four times the points – the points get applied to discounts up to $1 off/gallon at the gas station. She purchases for stores/restaurants they know they’ll be going to, or for gift giving throughout the year.
I went with the “invest at current prices, expecting higher in summer” method and did a big Azure Standard order this month that was dropped late last week. $800 but it is enough meat, fish, and grains to take us through to fall, so I’m calling it $150ish a month and we’ll only need a few perishables otherwise.
Brianna says
I have thought about Azure Standard and browsed their website but I am still on the fence. I live in a metro area and there is a location drop close enough. I have even watched a few YouTubers on it. I have cut back on Costco because they are carrying more junk in odd flavors rather than the regular stuff I usually buy and prices have gotten steep on some stuff and packaging/quantity smaller on others.
Melonie K. says
I suspect Azure isn’t cheaper on some things, but we are in a rural area and the closest Costco & Sam’s are over an hour each way for us. I actually stopped shopping at Costco in 2015 – just wasn’t worth my while.
For us Azure Standard has been a good middle ground; we have a small food co-op and a small commissary (military grocery) available that fill the rest of the bases. I can see where it wouldn’t be a fit for folks with access to the warehouse stores if organic and such aren’t a focus, though. I hope you find the right fit for you! 😀
Torry says
Melanie, my husband does the buy gift cards and get 4X the points, too. Helps at the gas pump, for sure. But he also buys them with a credit card that gives money back, so we save that way too. We always pay off the card with direct deposit, so no fees there either. Work smarter, not harder is our motto! Both of us had really smart grandfathers who used to say that, too. (And recently our 5 year old grandson told his parents to work smarter, not harder! So I think it is going to pass down a few more generations!)
Torry says
Melonie, spell check is beastly when it comes to names spelled “out of the traditional ” way. I had corrected it twice, but it snuck past me the third time. Torry ( with two results and a y. And not Tony. Sigh. I feel your pain.)
Melonie K. says
I love that your grandson is sharing the phrase too – he’s onto something there. 😉
We use a points card as well, my husband just applied ours actually. I use it to pay our utilities and such so the reward “bucks” add up quickly and then we throw it in savings.
No worries on the name – but thank you for trying! Gotta love technology! (Back in the days when we wrote gobs of checks, I had a young lady look at my check and inform me “There’s a typo in your name.” Um, no, that’s just MY NAME. haha)
Nancy in California says
Much of the celery in the US comes from California and we have had major damage to the crops due to all of the rain we have had this winter. We desperately need the rain, so we are trying not to complain but it has been a lot. There is record breaking snow pack in the mountains. The ski resorts think they will be able to stay open thru July.

Our local Albertson’s had ham for $0.77 per pound so we picked up a couple for the freezer. They also had bacon at $5.97 for 3 pounds, asparagus for $0.97 per pound, pineapples $1.47 each (man I hope they ripen on my bench) and milk for $0.97 per 1/2 gallon. Fred Meyer had butter for $2.49 per pound and we had a coupon that took off an extra 70 cents.
All in, we spent about $95 this week, but $22 of that was butter and bacon for my son (they’re away on vacation and missed the deals they could use to stock their freezer)
Mark says
I picked up a couple more spiral cut hams at .97 cents a pound to throw in the deep freezer. Less than $10 a piece and each one will feed us for a week. Celery here was a $1.99. Which was still high for me. I can’t believe the price of potatoes either. $4 for a 5 pound bag.
Lana says
We bought celery for 99 cents at Lidl last week.

I didn’t do quite as good as you Mavis but I did do the Shaws vitual coupons for the 3 day sale on sweet potatoes @ 37 cents a lb. and the 57 cent frozen veggies. Five lbs. Of sweet potatoes + 6 boxes of frozen veggies for $5.27. I was very happy with that.

I made it to Aldi this week. They had their hams on sale (Appleton Farms), reduced from $2.59/lb down to $0.96/lb. I purchased one for the freezer, costing me a whopping $11. This is great for white beans and ham, and ham and cheese scones. I have a trip to the butcher planned for next weekend, I can get beef short ribs for $2/lb, beef soup bones for $0.59/lb, and pork bones for only $0.39/lb. I am not planning for soup, however, I want to make bolognese and can enough to last me through the summer. Total spent this week on fresh veggies and that wonderful ham = $109.47.
