Summer eating, and simple meals are here, that’s for sure. This past week I pulled the usual suspects from the freezer; tomato soup, chicken soup, Saturday night beans, cinnamon rolls, slices of cake and I even made a few batches of cookies with the frozen cookie dough I tucked away.
We have also started making the rounds to some of our favorite seasonal spots. Last week we visited Jameson Point Lobster, this past week we met up with The Kiln Guy and The Chef at Bet’s Fish Fry.
Even though we were busy outside nearly every day this past week, I still managed to take some time and make a few homemade meals.
Tuna casserole, Pepperoni Focaccia Pizza, and Cherry Linzer torte {dessert counts as a meal, right?}.
The haddock sandwich at Bet’s Fish Fry… If you’re headed to Maine this summer, be sure and pop over to Boothbay for a bite.
I also made a batch of my rhubarb cinnamon jam, because well, it’s rhubarb season and you can never have enough jam. Or can you? 😉 Hmmm I suppose that could be debated.
The Girl is here, and so she’s been busy working on her latte art.
The in-laws sent the HH a box filled with BBQ for his birthday {they find the BEST care packages on Goldbelly!}. I plan on making another pot of Saturday night beans to go with the ribs they sent. And maybe some homemade potato salad.
The Duck Lady $8 {$4 a dozen}
I’ve been in the mood for quiche lately so I loaded up on eggs.
A note about the eggs… We stopped by the Boothbay Farmers Market last week and one of the stands was selling eggs for $9 a dozen! Holy Cats! I couldn’t believe it.
Costco $118.17
Necessary summer rations from Costco.
Having someone else stop by Costco and pick things up for you is really a smart shopping strategy if you ask me. It removes all temptation.
I can’t decide if I’m looking forward to plates full of nachos or those Thinsters coconut cookies more.
Fact: The big bag of Costo chips is now $6.79. I think we first started buying them, they were only $3.99 a bag.
So with $676.52 spent on groceries for the year, we might be a little over budget for the year right now… But things tend to even out towards the end of summer.
We should still be on target for a $100 a month average grocery budget for the year once we get a little later into the year and all the goodness from the garden starts to roll in.
Speaking of the garden… Today The Girl and I will be planting the tomatoes, peppers and potatoes in the garden. Yee-Haw!
So what’s new with YOU? Did you find any fantastic deals on food this past week? And I’m curious, would you ever pay $9 for a dozen eggs?
Have a good one,
Mavis
P.S. Our local Home Depot has blueberry bushes on sale this weekend for $12.88. Maybe yours does too. 🙂

Too much jam? Not. Before I can open the next jar of the favorite peach jam, its predecessors have to be eaten first. So….I opened a jar of chokecherry jelly from 2015. Still delicious.

I would have to be pretty desperate to pay that much for eggs. They have come down in price recently
Love your about to be garden!

I find that even though eggs have come down in price and I am no longer paying $6+/18ct that I seem to be buying more. I guess my brain has the thought that they might go back up, so I better buy 2 just in case. Of course I am still paying more now for eggs than I was a year ago. Inflation and shortages mess with my shopping thinking.
I went to Costco last week and I noticed a lot of the staples I buy there have gone up $2-$8 from the usual price I have been paying for years. The quality has gotten worse too. I have been label reading since January because of my hubby’s health condition and I was going to buy a pack of the Nathan’s hotdogs for the kids. I assumed they were the same as they are the identical product from the grocery store I buy, just a bigger package. They were identical in all labels except the nutrition (much higher fat and sodium) and the ingredient list had a dozen extra ingredients. We were shocked. It seems every trip I find something that is not what is used to be. Last time was the vanilla extract as it is not as dark as it used to be or have a good strong vanilla flavor, it is weak and you can see through it and lacks the solids that were in the bottom. The chocolate chips changed too, from the white to the red package and are full of additional ingredients and do not melt the same. They also did away with photo services. I buy less and less at Costco.

If you are ever interested in extracting your own vanilla I belong to this group. The beans offered are from all over the world. The price cannot be beat. https://www.facebook.com/groups/848812811970139/?hoisted_section_header_type=recently_seen&multi_permalinks=2234923533359053

I am seriously debating whether to renew my membership with them. We, too, are buying less and less there. It seems every time we go, their cheese offerings are fewer, and so many things have gone up substantially in price.

I noticed on the Nestle’s chocolate chip package it now says contains bioengineered ingredients. You have to read everything now!

I would not pay $9 / dozen. Eggs have come back down around here. Last week $1.99 / 2 dozen at Costco!

I pay $7 from a local farm share. I get them delivered right to my door with my personal vegetable bag. The veggies are from local farms too.

I will build my own coup and “find” some chickens before I pay $9 a dozen. My local egg lady is still at $4 a dozen and the eggs are really good quality. The best deal I got this week was seeds for the garden at tractor supply – they were less than $2 a pack. More basil and radishes for us this year!

We came in under budget this month on groceries ($66.00 under)! I haven’t bought eggs in a while (we have chickens) but I saw that Publix (in Florida) had 1 dozen for $4.74.
Our area had a new Publix open a few weeks ago and boy oh boy is it pretty! It has a 2nd floor (with elevator or stairs access) with tables and chairs so that you can buy your lunch (or dinner) and eat it there. I have never seen a 2nd floor in a grocery store. They also have a buffet area (8.99/lb of whatever you pick) – it has different specials each day. The meat is chicken but there are different variations each day and there are also salads and all the yummy things you put on salads. Plus, they have all the usual items at their deli counter. And ALL the shelves were fully stocked! Haven’t seen that for a while . . . This Publix is not close enough to me to be my usual shopping place (it’s about 30 minutes away – my usual place is about 12 minutes away), but I think I will have to go out of my way and shop there at least once.
Our topless greenhouse garden is still doing good. The romaine and red leaf lettuce are done – we did eat well for quite a few weeks. I updated my blog with the current status of everything. Here’s a link :

Hi Rosemary, Can I ask where this double decker Publix is? I live in Fort Myers *wave*

We finally have our coop up and chickens should be laying by fall. Will take a bit to recover our investment, but, so very worth it!
15 chickens should supply eggs for us, our daughters family, and my parents! Hope to save money by fermenting their feed. We are still paying 7.99 for 24 eggs at Costco. Farm fresh eggs are selling here on average for $5.00 a dozen. With the chickens, garden, and groceries mostly from monthly Azure Standard purchases, hoping to eliminate trips to the grocery store as much as possible!
Mel says
In theory, I would not pay $9 for eggs. In actuality, I did just pay $9 for a package of American cheese slices because prices are nuts, so paying that much for eggs would probably be a better deal.
Linda Practical Parsimony says
I absolutely pay $9/doz. I paid $7 earlier. However, I am grateful to have paid $1.25 for for 18 eggs a few weeks ago and $.99 now. When I had four hens, I wanted eggs from happy hens that ate food not chicken feed. Basically, those eggs were free since I gathered food not sold from a produce stand and leftovers from everywhere. I even pulled weeds and from my yard for them.

Is it me or does that seem like a lot of moola for Costco. Yesterday I paid $2.00 for 6 backyard chicken eggs from my little one’s friend (age 8) who raises her own chickens and puts them in a cooler at the end of her driveway, on the honor system. We had given her a ride home from a birthday party and she didn’t even want the $2 but I insisted.
Nancy says
How many chickens does the Duck Lady have? I had three and they were a lot of work and worry but incredibly entertaining . Had a deal with a friend, she’d buy feed for the hens in exchange for 10 dozen eggs. The feed was about $35.

I don’t trust Home Depot for ANY plants… they’re probably spraying them with bee killing sprays…go to a local plant nursery! Buy LOCAL!

Hi from SWFL. Eggs at Aldi have gone down considerably. My local store was $1.12 for a dozen this weekend. Despite the price decrease, we eat a lot less eggs in the last year or so with the price increases. So, I have started to buy on an as needs basis only. When I’m down to one or two eggs I’ll then buy another dozen at the store. I’ve taken on this approach with a lot more groceries. Avoid unless I need it or it’s on a great sale.
