My 14 Goals for 2020
Goal #1 – Take Full Advantage of Having My Husband Home 24/7
I didn’t do a single dish, fold any laundry or cook anything this past week. Dang… if that’s not AWESOME, I don’t know what is.
Goal #2 – Take Better Care of Myself.
Well, I had my hair chopped off and had it highlighted for the first time in {I don’t know} 10 years. One of my neighbors is a hairdresser and so I just walked down the street, sat in a chair and let her do whatever. Well, not really whatever because she wanted to cut my hair even shorter {shoulder length!} but I wouldn’t let her.
But the HH likes it and who knows, I might even start wearing it down now 10% of the time. Baby steps right?
Goal #3 – Get Organized
In an effort to get more organized, I have decided to have “theme weeks” for the next 6 weeks in hopes it will help keep me on track, and so far it’s working!
January 12th -18th – Hooking and Pottery{The electrician came out and installed an outlet for the kiln!}January 19th – 25th – Paintand Make Shades for the lime green room {that will soon be white}- January 26th – January 31st – Finish up new offerings for my February 7th Etsy Shop update.
- February 1st – 7th – Dye Wool
- February 8th – 14th – Kitchen Backsplash and Fixtures
- February 15th – Hooking and Pottery
Goal #4 – Get Proper Window Coverings on All Our Windows.
I was planning on painting AND making shades for the green room this past week but things didn’t pan out. Hopefully I can get to them in the next few days. All the walls area painted in that room now though and I did order a new coffee table and light fixture for the space, so that’s progress, right?
Goal #5 – Master Bedroom Make Over
I’m planning on working on the bedroom makeover for late February.
Goal #6 – Kitchen Update
The HH installed two new fixtures last week {in the kitchen and the eating area} and we both really like how they look. He also changed out the knobs and pulls {but still needs to order new hinges} and began to tear out the old backsplash in the kitchen too.
It’s slow going, and he still has the main wall {along the kitchen sink area to go} but it’s coming along. Now I can’t decide if I want to paint the round kitchen table and chairs we picked up on Craigslist white or black. I might have to wait and see until after the backsplash is in place but now I’m leaning towards black.
Goal #7 – Install Vegetable Garden
Now all that’s left to do is order the asparagus crowns and raspberry canes and wait until the ground thaws! I asked my neighbors {who don’t garden} if there was anything they’d like me to add to my veg patch and they came back with a few things that weren’t on my original list {tarragon, sprouts, sorrel and cauliflower} so I’ll be adding those as well once I plot of the garden on paper next month.
I’m still thinking about 4 long raised beds along the back of the yard as well as redoing {meaning; pulling out all the barftastic plants in} the current borders and expanding them to suit my needs. Oh how I wish there was some sort of 10 year time lapse on the backyard of this home. It would be so interesting to see how it has morphed into what it is today over the years {the same with the inside as well}.
Goal #8 – Explore More of Maine Checked everything off my list for the month on January!
On the radar for exploring Maine this month:
A ferry ride to Isleboro, Maine {anyone been there?}Done!Maine Mineral & Gem Museum in Bethel, MaineDone!
Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, MaineDone!
Goal #9 – Host Some Sort of Get Together
I told the HH that if he could get the kitchen finished by the end of the week we could have a Superbowl party. He just sort of laughed, like it totally wasn’t even possible.
Goal #10 – Read/Listen to 12 Books
I didn’t make it to the library yesterday {didn’t even make it out of my jammies!} so I didn’t get a chance to pick up any new reading material. Maybe tomorrow.
Goal #11 – Learn A New Skill or Craft
My buddy Heather from Massachusetts will be moving closer to me soon and I am super excited about that. There are multiple places in between that we could meet up and take classes together and while we don’t have anything planned yet, I know we’ll find something fun to do.
Goal #12 – Visit 12 Museums, Historical Homes or Botanical Gardens {and bakeries too!}
January
- Maine Maritime Museum
- Maine Mineral and Gem Museum
- The Island Market
- Cafe DiCocoa
- Hungry Hollow Country Store
Goal # 13 – Reach 5,000 Etsy Sales by the End of The Year
As of this morning, I have made 2,933 sales on Etsy. That’s up from 2804 on January 1st. Wahoo! This past week I finished the grey house rug, a tulip rug and two stars as well as started a sunflower pillow. I also put together a new tug hooking kit; Hilda and Mabel’s Prize Winning Beet and listed it in my Etsy shop. I’ll add the other pieces {and hopefully a few more} when I do my big monthly Etsy shop update on Friday, February 7th at 6pm.
Goal #14 – Once a Month Menu Planning {for 2}
I am really enjoying this goal! And although we’ve only added one thing this week to the freezer meal section I am hopeful that by the beginning of gardening season, the freezer will be full and we won’t have to worry about meals for an entire month.
Have YOU made any goals for this year? If so, DO TELL! We all want to hear about them.
Have a great Sunday everyone,
~Mavis

1. HEALTH: I’ve mostly kept up with hydration, knocked out one doctors appointment and scheduled two more, and lost 5.5 lbs out of 10. I haven’t run in almost two weeks though due to an awful chest cold.
2. HOLIDAYS: I want to learn to carve springerle cookie molds to give as gifts. I have the tools but need to find the right wood.
3. COOKING: I haven’t made yogurt, brioche, or spice mixes yet.
4. HOUSEWORK: Deep cleaning is planned for Spring Break. I’ve mostly kept up with laundry folding, but I was sick for a week, so I got a little behind on that. It’s not quite housework, but I did just order all my garden seeds.
5. SEWING: I haven’t worked on this goal yet other than making one skirt.
6. DIGITAL STUFF: I read 1.5 out of 2 Kindle books, but I haven’t worked on organizing photos or Pinterest boards yet.

When are you sharing what you plan to have in your garden this year? 😀 I’ve just started planning and am so excited!
My 2020 Goals
Eat less sugar — not applicable to gatherings, weekends, holidays, vacation, dates, etc (loose rules I will follow are better than none at all, and it’s going well!)
Screen time —
Books — 26 new books (tried for 52 books last year, ended with 30 something)
Knitting — New projects I want to try include: stuffed animal, romper, socks, and ornaments (3).
New country — (From USA, living in Finland, made it to Canada and Portugal last year, hoping for Italy this year! But Italy was also my hope for last year )
Garden — install a cold frame, *new* earn 50€ from extra garden produce
Walking — average 12 miles per week (up from a goal of 10 last year, finished with 11.3)
Exercise — 3x per week
Me on week 3, “Why did I put exercise THREE times per week?? Isn’t that too many?” But going better since then!
Language study— 1/2 hour per week
Letters — 1 per month
Sermon— one extra per week (usually from a sister church in the US—I like to be able to still hear English hymns too!)
Floors — Once a week (embarrassing it has to be a goal but I ignore them so easily!)
Music — 1/2 hour (piano practice) per week

If you have a Kindle, tablet, or smartphone, you may be able to download ebooks or audiobooks from your library. It’s worth checking out on the days when it’s too cold to leave your house. I prefer real books but on really snowy days when I don’t want to drive, I’ll download an ebook instead. You should check to see what your library offers.

Not sure what paint you use for painting furniture but I have found Heirloom Traditions pretty amazing. Tons of links, info, videos are online. It’s super easy to use and gets amazing results.

Hi Mavis! I love how your hair looks with highlights! How many inches did she cut off? I do agree with her that a little shorter makes straight hair (like mine) looks fuller. Next time, get up the nerve to go even a few inches shorter like to the bottom of that top red bar on your shirt. Still long enough to pull into a ponytail and will be so easy to wash and dry!
Don’t forget to try winter sowing on at least a few early veggies! I happen to live in a much warmer climate than you, but I see pictures of people with snow on top of their milk jugs so I know it works in cold climates too! Have fun planning your new garden!

Dianne,
Discovered Winter Sowing quite a few years ago and it’s fabulous for those seeds which like to start out with chilly toes. Highly recommend the process.

I agree! I am in Colorado and LOVE winter sowing! It really helps me maximize my short growing season.

I love your new highlights. I’m thinking ahead about all the stuff to do for our new house (Foothills of the Sierras, 2500 ft above sea level, moving from sea level/Wine Country). I think it will take me some time to figure out what grows and how fast or slow at the new heights.
My goals include visiting 12 new coffee houses (one so far); making 12 new friends (since we’re moving — I’m up to 2); make 10 things (whatever craft, zero so far).
I also vowed to start blogging again, to write about our home renovation and life without our son. It’s at my website if anyone’s interested (www.juliaparktracey.com). I’m working on week 4 our of 52, and enjoying myself.
Thanks for the inspiration, Mavis. I look forward to following your progress all week.

LOve the color of your hair; so pretty!
Great news about your friend Heather moving closer! What fun! Life seems so much happier for you compared to last winter 🙂

Ooh, pretty hair. I just got my hair cut, and the lady is trying to talk me into highlights. My hair is about the same color as yours. Maybe I’ll do it just before our summer vacation.
