My 14 Goals for 2020
Goal #1 – Take Full Advantage of Having My Husband Home 24/7
The big projects of the week for the HH were fixing all the squeaky doors, helping me unbox all the wool that was delivered and raking leaves. I thought I’d go easy on him this week as the new tile for the entryway is supposed to be delivered next week. 🙂
Goal #2 – Take Better Care of Myself.
I need to make an effort to exercise a little more. I only left the house once last week {for date day}. This whole lounging around in my jammies all day {unless I’m going out in the kayak, I do get dressed for that} is really nice. But I probably need a little more exercise than walking back and forth from the the kitchen to grab another cup of tea.
Watching the HH rake leaves all day and rug hooking for hours is nice, but I should probably be moving around a little more than that.
I organized winter project #1 for the HH. Sooo thoughtful, I know.
I ordered the tile, the light fixture, counted the outlets {so he can replace the tan ones with white ones} and finalized the paint colors for the space {white for the walls and trim, black gloss for the French door}.
My job is to paint and find artwork for the wall. His job is to do everything else. 🙂
Currently the entryway has bright blue walls and a reddish orange tiled floor, so I think this will be a BIG improvement once it’s all done.
Goal #4 – Get Proper Window Coverings on All Our Windows. Done!
Goal #5 – Master Bedroom Make Over Done!
Goal #6 – Kitchen Update Done!
Goal #7 – Install Vegetable Garden Done!
Goal #8 – Explore More of Maine Done!
Goal #9 – Host Some Sort of Get Together Done!
13 turkeys came for a visit on Friday. That counts, right? 🙂 I hope they liked all the acorns we left for them on the grass.
Goal #10 – Read/Listen to 12 Books {1 more to go. I’m only counting real books, not cookbooks or home decor books}
After finishing up The Dutch House for the SECOND time, I bought the book Chickens, Gin, and a Maine Friendship: The Correspondence of E. B. White and Edmund Ware Smith. I’m only a few pages in, but I can tell it’s going to be a good one already!

Goal #11 – Learn A New Skill or Craft Done
I learned how to make swizzle sticks with my former neighbor and I think they turned out great for my first try {you can see the kiln pictures here}.
Goal #12 – Visit 12 Museums, Historical Homes or Botanical Gardens {and bakeries too!} Done!
We took a drive out to the Marshal Point Lighthouse to take in the view and check out the maintenance barn there. When we visited this summer we loved the look of the barn {white} and the simple light fixture and are hoping to paint/fix up our little barn the same way. It was the perfect date day spot since nobody else was around.
Maine in the winter is the best though… there’s rarely a tourist in sight, and it feels like wherever you go, you get the real Maine.

Goal # 13 – Reach 5,000 Etsy Sales by the End of The Year DONE!
As of this morning, I have made 5305 sales on Etsy. That’s up from 2804 on January 1st. Wahoo! On Friday I stocked the pillow section of my Etsy page with a bunch of new wool pillows and I enjoyed making them so much, I think I’ll make a few more. 🙂
I’ve also been busy packing up ornaments and I’m looking forward to getting my kiln set up again in the Spring. I just have to figure out where we’re going to put it first.
Goal #14 – Once a Month Menu Planning {for 2}
- The HH’s meal plan for the month: Toasted Cheeze Its {He’s down to 2 boxes!}
- My meal plan for the month: Crock Pot soups and comfort foods.

If you enjoy that book, Mavis, I bet you’d also enjoy AS ALWAYS, JULIA which is correspondence between Julia Child and her longtime friend and literary mentor, Avis DeVoto. It was remarkable to hear more about Julia’s life in her own words and hear the advice and counsel that she was given – one doesn’t often think of Julia as someone who needs advice!
So happy that you and the HH are enjoying life in New England. It really is wonderful here!

As Always, Julia was a fantastic read.

Will do! 🙂 I’m almost done with the guest bedroom, I’ll share those once it’s all done.

Before and after please going forward. I guess it’s too late to see the before. A book for you – Indigo Girl – fabulous. I bought the Dutch House based on your recommendations. Haven’t started it yet but soon.

What are you doing with all your leaves? Do you have a designated composting area for the future garden beds? I don’t think I have ever read about leaves being a large part of your off-season garden soil improvement.
Mavis Butterfield says
The HH is moving them to the wooded area for now. He mentioned getting a chipper or something though for next Spring. If I had the garden up and running, I’d probably use them in a lasagna style garden.

Ever thought about simply spray painting the outlet covers white? Reuse, repurpose and recycle!
Tricia says
I recently finished the Smith/White book. Excellent. If you haven’t read EW Smith, and you want to dig into Maine culture, find his books. He’s a favorite at our house!
