Eat More Fruits and Vegetables
I’ve eaten more vegetables than I have in a while and that’s a good thing. Salads seem to be the meal of choice lately. It’s about time! 😉
Visit 24 {new} Bakeries / Coffee Shops
A girl can’t survive on salads alone though… So I slipped a donut in too. But not just ANY donut. It was the BEST Barvarian cream filled donut I’ve ever had. I’ll tell you more about it soon.
New Bakeries / Coffee Shops I’ve Been To This Year:
- Ritual Bakehouse and Patisserie
- Caramel Patisserie
- Standard Baking Co.
- Saltwater Farm Cafe
- Coffee Roasters of the Kennebunks
- Farine Bakery and Cafe
Go On An Adventure
Has anyone been to Bora Bora? We went to Costco this past week and I grabbed one of their vacation booklets on the way out. Most of the places there were spots I had no interest in but I’ve always thought Tahiti or Bora Bora sounded kind of cool.
But what do people do there besides snorkel and eat tropical fruit? I’m not big on relaxing {maybe you’ve noticed} so I’d probably be super bored after 24 hours… But maybe not?
FACT: I just looked up how long it would take to get there and the quickest way would be 20 hours and 32 minutes with 2 stopovers. It turns out there are no direct flights to Bora Bora from Boston. 2 days travel there and back. I think I can forget that one. Wowza!
Contribute to 12 Free Little Libraries. {4 town down, 8 to go}
I did contribute to a free little library this past week… But I forgot to take a picture! Boo! It was in Cape Elizabeth. And the little library was in front of a house that was bedazzled with flowers.
Towns I’ve donated books to:
- Gardiner, Maine
- Nobleboro, Maine
- Kennebunk and Kennebunkport
- Cape Elizabeth
Read or Listen to 24 Books {7 down, 17 to go}
I am currently listening to The Innovators by Walter Issacson.
Books I’ve Read or Listened To This Year:
- Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service by Gary Sinise. 10/10
- Elizabeth The Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch by Sally Bedell Smith 9/10
- Wait Till Next Year by Dorris Kearns Goodwin 8/10
- George VI and Elizabet:by Sally Bedell Smith 9/10
- Steve Jobs by Walter Issacson 9/10
- These Precious Days by Ann Pachett 9.5/10
- Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson
Spend More Time At The Beach
I think Lucy and I went to the beach every day this past week! It feels SO NICE to be able to do that! It’s starting to get crowded though with tourist season starting up so I might have to be a bit more strategic as to when we go for our long walks.
Paint
My latest paint by number is coming along. I think I’m about 15% of the way finished. It’s another big one {20” x 30”} so it might take me a while. Then again, I might pull a few all nighters. One can never tell. 😉
So far I’ve finished:
- Portrait of Joseph Roulin
- Red Boats at Argenteuil
- Regattas at Argenteuil
- Vase with Cornflowers and Poppies
- Sunflowers
- Garden Path with Chickens
- Goldfish
Hook 6 “Big” Rugs.
I don’t think I’ll be hooking any new “BIG” rugs in the next few months but I did manage to work on a rug this week… At the beach.
Large Rugs I’ve Hooked This Year
Visit 6 Greenhouses {that I’ve never been to before}.
No visits to any greenhouses this past week, but I already know which one I want to go to first.
Grow Baby Grow
I’m without a garden at the moment but it’s been really nice to be able to walk around and see what everyone else is growing. Mostly it’s flowers that I’m finding {window boxes and potted plants especially}. Lot’s of color, that’s for sure.
Donate to 12 Different Organizations in Maine
I’ve decided to volunteer my time this month by picking up trash/treasures while Lucy and I walk the beach each day. I am constantly in awe of what people leave behind {by accident or on purpose}.
I feel like there needs to be a town lost and found shed or something similar to house everything so the items at least have a chance of getting back to their owners.
So Far This Year I’ve Donated To:
- New Hope MidCoast {50 pairs of new socks}
- Humane Society {180 trays of cat food}
- Travis Mills Foundation
*I still need to Drop off the art supplies to Camp Sunshine
So how are YOUR goals for 2024 coming along? I’d love to hear about them.
~Mavis
Goals I’ve Already Completed This Year
In Stock and Ready to Ship by March 15th/ March 30th Now April 15th DONE!
I finally finished up all the major wool dyeing and pattern/kit making I had hoped too. All the “extra” wool is tucked away in bins so if I run out of wool in my Etsy shop I can whip up some more bundles in a jiffy. A summer off from dyeing wool… It’s going to be pretty rad.
Tidy Up / Clean Out / Purge DONE
We cleaned the whole house, inside and out. And then we sold it. Yee-Haw!

Love that your shorts and your rug are coordinating at the beach! 🙂
Peg says
I thought the same thing!
Paula says
The distance to Bora, Bora is the reason that I won’t be going.
Holley says
Hooking at the beach sounds like a perfect way to spend a day! Enjoy, Mavis!
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks Holley!

If you want an exotic trip in which you can get delicious food, hear a “foreign” (to Americans) language, see new sights and learn about the history of another country, all within a reasonable air flight (or driving!), why don’t you go to Montreal or Quebec City? You’ll also enrich your understanding of American history while doing activities that will not bore you.
Mavis Butterfield says
Quebec City is on my list. I think I’d like to go at Christmastime though. 🙂

Yes, we went on a cruise (round trip LA) a few years ago to Bora Bora, Samoa and Tahiti while also hitting 4 Hawaiian islands en route. Loved all the sea days and the peace of being out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I got lots of knitting done and 3-4 trivia games a day in on sea days. The islands were just as gorgeous as the pictures make it look and the islanders couldn’t have been any more welcoming. I highly recommend a cruise to see the South Pacific but would never fly all that way.
BTW, Mavis. Just wanted to thank you for the recommendation of Maybelline Falsies mascara. I had my doubts anything could help my sadly thinning eyelashes, but that stuff ROCKS!!! I wore it yesterday to a party and my eyelashes looked better than I thought possible. Really made me feel like wearing makeup more often than I have been. THANKS!!
Mavis Butterfield says
It’s the only mascara that makes my tiny eyelashes look like normal ones! 🙂 Glad it works for you too.

Don’t wait too long to donate to the camp. If it is a summer camp, they are ordering now to get it in for the summer.
I love that you are donating your time and effort to cleaning up the beach!
Julia Park Tracey says
I thought you went to that lovely greenhouse in Maine last week? The one with all the pretty pots and flowers? Did not count as a greenhouse?
Mavis Butterfield says
I did, but I had been there before. The goal is to visit 6 *new* greenhouses this year. 🙂
Tracey Morris says
I love Moorea and Bora Bora. Have been there several times. Tahiti is just a stop to get transport to other islands in my opinion
We always flew direct from San Francisco or LA.
A little over 9 hours if I remember correctly.

We went to the Cook Islands for our honeymoon and enjoyed it. Yes, it was slower pace to life but nice. And the closer you are to the equator, daylight is closer to 6am to 6pm.
Just thought of it, or next year’s goal. Weigh how much trash you pick up at the beach. My uncle does that after a big clean up. Grab a luggage scale and weight the bag before disposing.
HollyG says
Sometimes you can take found items to the police station or city hall and then post on the town’s FB/IG pages with a description or photo or the item letting folks know where you took it.
Jules says
Have you heard of Roratonga? Some friends went there last year instead of Hswaii and loved it. If I ever get to go traveling it would be on my list
