My 22 Goals for 2019
Goal #1 — Spend More Time Doing What I Love
I’ve only been able to sit in my chair once this week because for some strange reason, Miss Lucy Puggle has decided the chair is now her’s and he has no intention on sharing. Especially when the sun is out. This dog, I think she’s looking forward to being able to spend her daylight hours outside again laying in the grass and soaking up the sun.
Goal #2 — Garden, Garden, Garden
The only thing we are harvesting is eggs these days… and even those seem to come and go with the weather. Right now there is a solid 8 -10 inches surrounding the coop but the ladies don’t seem to mind because the inside of their run has a nice bed of straw to walk around on.
Goal #3 — Plant an Orchard
Maybe in late April?
Goal #4 — Gussy Up the Potting Shed
No gussying up this week…. The doors on the potting shed are still frozen shut.
Goal #5 — Grow Enough Extra Vegetables, Eggs and Flowers to Earn $1500 at my little roadside vegetable stand.
According to the weather forecasters, this morning around 9 am we are supposed to get snow {from 9 am – 3 pm to be exact} and then on Friday they are forecasting a high of 62 degrees! Can you believe that? I checked the mini greenhouse yesterday and it was pretty toasty in there, even with a boatload of snow on the ground outside.
I never did get around to using the greenhouse last year, but I’m hoping the HH will have time to build a long table or two for me so I can harden off seedlings in there later this spring.
Seeds I planted so far this year:
Goal #6 — Finish Every Single Unfinished Rug Hooking Project in My Pattern Bin + 10 Things from back Issues of Magazines/Books I’ve Been Meaning to Make.
I updated my Etsy Shop last week with my latest creations and this week I hooked a whopping 7 mini rugs for my next Etsy listing on march 29th. Only one of the rugs came from my pattern bin though {bad Mavis!} so I’ve still got 62 mote to go.
I started the year off with:
- 73 rugs {now down to 62}
- 183 hooked flowers {finished 68, now down to 115}
- 10 “things” from back issues of magazines {finished 0}
Goal #7 — Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns {with at least half of them being large ones}
I started off the year wanting to create 12 new rug hooking patterns and so far I’ve create 4 new patterns {well, actually 5 but I don’t count a pattern as done until I have the model hooked up and the pattern ready to sell}. I’ve also added a few rug hooking kits to my Etsy shop due to people asking if I could make a kit for them. I wasn’t planning on making kits to sell, but I’ve made a few and so we’ll see how it goes.
New Rug Hooking Patterns I’ve Created This Year:
Goal #8 — Split and Stack 2 Cords of Wood for Next Winter
I am hoping we’ll be able to get this done as soon as the snow melts and before all the brush comes back to life in the back woods.
Goal #9 — Do Something with the 5,002 Photos on My Phone
Ehhhh.
Goal #10 –Lose the Muffin Top
The treadmill has been assembled for 5 days now and it was only last night that I finally hopped on the thing and walked a mile. If it wasn’t for all of you holding me accountable, it would still be in the box. So thank you. 🙂 The goal is to be up to 5 miles a day by my next goal update.
Goal #11 — Run, Walk or Crawl a 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon
I haven’t signed up for anything yet.
Goal #12 — Read or Listen to 26 New Books
Last week I listened to Carnegie’s Maid on audio book and really enjoyed it. And then after listening to the audio the book I spent a ridiculous amount of time online reading about Andrew Carnegie. Did you know he didn’t marry until he was 51? Wouldn’t you be totally set in your ways by then?
In other reading news, I picked up the copy of Where’d You Go, Bernadette Mrs. Hillbilly sent me, read the first 5 pages and knew I was going to like the book so I jumped on the treadmill and started walking.
As I was reading I wondered about Mrs. HB, and as she was reading the book, if she was reading it in MY VOICE. Oh my word. I don’t even know what to say but I think Bernadette and I might have a lot in common in the personality department. I’m only on page 27 though, so I don’t know for sure.
I wanted to sit down and read the entire book right then and there, but I told myself I could only read the book if I was walking on the treadmill because I could tell, Where’d You Go, Bernadette was the kind of book I could read cover to cover in one sitting without even getting up for tea.
Motivation… I could use some. And this book might just be my ticket.
STILL patiently waiting my turn on the library wait list for the following audio books:
- The Four Tendencies
- Before We Were Yours
- This is the Story of a Happy Marriage
- The Coddling of the American Mind
- The Alice Network
- 12 Rules for Life
Books I’ve Read or Listened to So Far This Year:
- Carnegie’s Maid
- Marilla of Green Gables
- Finder’s Keepers
- Delicious!
- Will’s Red Coat.
- Following Atticus
Goal #13 — Try 52 New Recipes.
6 down, 46 recipes to go.
Goal #14 — Clean Up 52 Old Recipes on the Blog
Seven recipes down, 45 to go.
Goal #15 — Fill 100 Canning Jars
Market Basket has pears on sale for $0.99 a pound this week so I think I’ll pick some up and can something. Stay tuned.
Goal #16 — Finish Furnishing Our House
No furniture pieces this week but I did come home with a nice basket and two small containers I plan to use as vases for the veggie stand.
Furniture pieces I’m still on the hunt for:
- Coffee table for the family room
- Console, cupboard or sideboard for the one and only tv in our house which is in the family room. I could totally live without a television, but my husband says the tv stays.
- Long rectangular table for the craft room.
- Table for the formal dining room that nobody will ever sit in.
- A wing back chair for the family room.
- I’d also like to decorate the mantel in the keeping room as well as put up some sort of decoration above the other 3 fireplaces in the house. I’m not one for a lot of things on the walls, but it would be nice to throw up a little pilgrim bling on the plaster.
Goal #17 – 52 Dates with the HH {7 down, 45 to go}
We didn’t get out this past week because he was sick but the list of places I want to visit keeps growing.
Goal #18 — Take One Adult Education Class
I’ll know it when I see it.
Goal #19 — Secret {for now} Holiday Project {On hold, because I don’t have the patience for it}
Wind chimes might be a good replacement idea.
Goal #20 — Create 12 Wowie Zowie Party Platters
2 down 10 to go.
Goal #21 — Visit 12 General Stores
1 down 11 to go and I have a HUGE list of stores I want to visit when we are in those particular areas.
Goal #22 — Compete with Carole….. Get on My Front Door Game On
I think I’m going to make a big carrot cut out for Easter. 🙂
Front Door Bling I’ve Made So Far This Year to Compete with Carole:
Late January : Valentine Heart ♥
Late February : Shamrock

That is a great book! I read it for a book club a few years ago in one or two sittings, couldn’t put it down.

Where’d you go, Bernadette? is a fun read! It’s always a kick to read a book that’s based locally. Did you know a movie version is happening? That should be interesting…
Laura says
I had a friend tell me that she read the book with me as the titular character. I definitely see parts of that, but not others. Sometimes Seattle makes me shake my head with the way locals think and act. Love, not love for sure.
Glad you are enjoying it. Hope the HH feels better soon!

When I first saw the picture (of the treadmill) with the lose the muffin top goal I thought that 103 was your weight. And I was gonna be like daaaaaaaaaaaaang, why Mavis gotta lose a muffin top on only 103 pounds of weight? LOL!
I’m all over the place with several of my goals for a variety of (very good) reasons. But I’m still chuggin’ along and planning on getting them all completed this year. Some will be easier than others, but, I just gotta keep at it.

Mavis….the next time you visit King Arthur you should visit Dan And Whit’s in Norwich, VT. It’s a grand old general store and I’ve often found something there when no one else has it. Before you head for home, stop in West Lebanon, NH and visit the West Lebanon Feed and Grain……lots of fun things.

Thanks for the info. I am headed to KAF in the coming months. Luv the helpful tips on where to visit!

Hi Mavis,
Regarding your adult education class, I recently heard about some cheese making workshops in the New England area. Since you and your HH love cheese, I thought you might be interested.

I finally started to walk a wee bit this week! Yesss! Gonna do it this week, too. It was nice….I found a huuuge wild blueberry bush on the side of our driveway. This summer makes 7yrs here, and no one’s noticed this bush yet??!!! Goodness! Also, it’s nice to wander down and back with the dogs following me. They must be feeling older this yr….one day they couldn’t be bothered to get up from their sunny naps in the front yard! Lol! The youngest is 7 in May, and the other two were rescues, and adults when we got them 7yrs ago….so idk how much time we have with them still.
I sewed presents for two friends, and sewed some just for me. And played a bit with some appliques last night. I love making up my own appliques and sewing them on to stuff. (And hate that my kids are now too old to make them all the appliqued tshirts, lol!) (I sewed 6 dishtowels + 16 cloth napkins, and cut out the fronts for another….idk, several dishtowels + 8 cloth napkins + 5-6 apple appliques.)
I didn’t cook for anyone else this week….shoot, I only cooked mon and tues this past week! We had dinner at church wed, thurs night we went out, fri we did potluck with friends (and we brought store bought pies), and last night I heated up chicken and dumplins from the freezer! 🙂 Dh said I cheated last night! Hahaha!
Oh, and until last night at bedtime, when I pulled a load from the dryer, I folded every load of laundry the day I washed/dried it. And with today being a sunday, and daylight savings sunday at that, that load still needs folded! I didn’t even have time for my second cup of coffee today!

In Boise local fruit and veg stands opened up last week and had strawberries and raspberries on sale. I picked up 2 flats of raspberries and 1 of strawberries and made jam! It felt so good to make it and get it canned. We were on our last jar of blueberry jam I made a year or so ago so we also needed some. I can’t wait to see what else I can get to put up. Unfortunately the berries weren’t local since it’s still to cold to grow much in ID but they were tasty!

My goals:
1. Sew – Met this goal again this week and now have over 50 corner bookmarks made.
2. Use up fabric stash – used some more.
3. Finishing projects will wait until Christmas sewing is done.
4. Walk – not going to happen with the knee issues.
5. Tried another new recipe which was okay, but not a keeper.
6.Clean more often – made that goal again this week.
7. Husband date – Not this week. (Next year there will be no goals that need the input of another person.)
8. Read more – met this goal and went to a library book sale this weekend. Now I have lots of books to read! (Just kidding, I always have lots of books!)
I am loving trying to meet my goals.

OMGosh, you are wearing a jacket on the treadmill? Too funny. Increase your incline/speed and shed that thing!
Mavis Butterfield says
I think that’s why I only made it a mile. Will try today without coat and see how far I get. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Amber from Ontario says
Mavis,
I grew up on a farm in Southern Ontario, and our winters are cold. My Dad used to say that if the hens’ feet got cold, they would stop laying, so he would keep a good bed of straw down for them.
