My 22 Goals for 2019
Goal #1 — Spend More Time Doing What I Love
Gardening season. It’s the best, don’t you think? A high of 58 is predicted for today, which can only mean one thing…. I’ll be outside most of the day. Wahoooooooo!
Goal #2 — Garden, Garden, Garden
I am a big believer in making a home YOUR OWN. And that includes any gardens which you inherit when you buy a place. I did my duty last year and didn’t pull anything up {well except a holly bush, an ill placed pine tree, an overgrown Normandy spruce, multiple rhododendrons and a really ugly juniper nest} because I wanted to wait and see exactly what the previous owners had planted in the garden.
This year though, I plan transform the small garden plot under my kitchen window into a herb garden, totally transform the area along our front fence where the previous owners had a bunch of {albeit lovely} random shrubs and well you know, make the garden mine.
Somethings I’ll be able to move, and others will be cut down with the handy dandy reciprocating saw the HH gave me a few years ago that got me into so much trouble with the HOA at our last place. But in the end, by the end of summer, I’m hoping the garden will be more to my taste {and contain a LOT less orange day-lilies}.
Seeds I planted so far this year:
Goal #3 — Plant an Orchard
Maybe in late April?
Goal #4 — Gussy Up the Potting Shed
The floor of the potting shed has been cleared and is ready for a nice thick layer of crushed rock. Which will be delivered on Monday. Yippee!
Goal #5 — Grow Enough Extra Vegetables, Eggs and Flowers to Earn $1500 at my little roadside vegetable stand.
A few weeks after we moved in last year, I weeded this exact area and all you could see was dirt, exposed stones and a few shallots shooting up through the soil and three rhubarb starts. And then it seemed the entire backyard just took off and everything became so overwhelming {weeds, ticks, the HUMIDITY} and well, I just ignored the area and it turned into a weedy mess.
Not this year though…. This is the year I am going to be ON TOP OF MY YARD. 😉
Weekly garden updates start Tuesday…. and this little patch {15′ x 8′} will all be cleared by then. Sound good? Good. Because I need you to hold me accountable. 🙂 I shall not be defeated this year!
Goal #6 — Finish Every Single Unfinished Rug Hooking Project in My Pattern Bin + 10 Things from back Issues of Magazines/Books I’ve Been Meaning to Make.
This past week I hooked 3 more rugs for my next Etsy Shop update on Friday, March 29th at 6 pm EST and this Bunny Express rug was one of them. Only 2 of the 3 rugs came from my project bin though but still, I was able to get a few more done so I was happy about that. I have hooked so many pieces this month and it’s been fun to see the stack of finished pieces grow.
I started the year off with:
- 73 rugs {now down to 58}
- 183 hooked flowers {finished 73, now down to 110}
- 10 “things” from back issues of magazines {finished 0}
Goal #7 — Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns {with at least half of them being large ones}
I hooked 2 new rug hooking patterns up this past week and hope to have the new patterns listed in my Etsy shop at the end of the week. After I get those listed, I’ll start on my giant turkey rug that I drew out a few months ago. The turkey rug will be the largest one I have ever made, so it will take some time but I’m hoping to have it finished by the end of May. I plan to document the entire process from start to finish and post the picture tutorial when I am finished.
New Rug Hooking Patterns I’ve Created And Added to My Etsy Shop This Year:
Goal #8 — Split and Stack 2 Cords of Wood for Next Winter
The ground finally thawed last week and so the maintenance crew 😉 was able to get the 3 cords of wood stacked up on pallets and out of the way. It won’t be long now before we start pruning and hopefully fell a tree or two so we’ll have enough wood {5 cords} to burn for next winter. Wood heat. It’s pretty awesome.
Goal #9 — Do Something with the 5,002 Photos on My Phone
Ehhhh.
Goal #10 –Lose the Muffin Top
I am hoping Muffy will just fall off during gardening season. Miracles can happen, right?
Goal #11 — Run, Walk or Crawl a 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon
I haven’t signed up for anything yet because I am lame.
Goal #12 — Read or Listen to 26 New Books
Early last week I finished up Where’d You Go, Bernadette {and totally loved it, even the ending, because really, how else would you expect the story to turn out}. And then I listened to about half of This is the Story of a Happy Marriage on audiobook before hitting the delete button because having to hear the term Iowa Writers Workshop 500 millions times, was getting on my nerves. Also, there really wasn’t anything extraordinary about the story.
And then, on a whim, I downloaded the book Secrets of a Charmed Life and whizzed though it in 2 days!! Oh my goodness! If you like historical fiction, Secrets of a Charmed Life is a great read and has moved into the #2 spot of favorite books I’ve read this year.
I am waiting my turn on the library wait list for the following audio books:
- The Four Tendencies
- Before We Were Yours
- The Coddling of the American Mind
- The Alice Network
- 12 Rules for Life
Books I’ve Read or Listened to So Far This Year:
- Secrets of a Charmed Life #2
- Where’d You Go, Bernadette #3
- Carnegie’s Maid #4
- Marilla of Green Gables #1 favorite
- Finder’s Keepers
- Delicious!
- Will’s Red Coat.
- Following Atticus
Goal #13 — Try 52 New Recipes.
8 down, 44 recipes to go.
No new recipes this past week.
Goal #14 — Clean Up 52 Old Recipes on the Blog
Seven recipes down, 45 to go.
Goal #15 — Fill 100 Canning Jars
4 down, 96 to go.
So far this year I’ve I canned 4 jars of Almond Pears.
Goal #16 — Finish Furnishing Our House
While I didn’t bring home any treasures this week to furnish our house, The Girl and I did spot a few things alongside the road on our drive to King Arthur Flour. 😉 Garage sale season…. it’s almost here! Weeeeee.
Furniture pieces I’m still on the hunt for:
Coffee table for the family room- Console, cupboard or sideboard for the one and only tv in our house which is in the family room. I could totally live without a television, but my husband says the tv stays.
Long rectangular table for the craft room.- Table for the formal dining room {We moved the kitchen table to the dining room and so mow we are looking for a table for the kitchen/keeping room area}.
- 2 wing back chairs for the family room.
- I’d also like to decorate the mantel in the keeping room as well as put up some sort of decoration above the other 3 fireplaces in the house. I’m not one for a lot of things on the walls, but it would be nice to throw up a little pilgrim bling on the plaster.
Goal #17 – 52 Dates with the HH {9 down, 43 to go}
So, apparently winter markets {as in winter farmer’s markets} are kind of a big deal around here. Who knew? 😉 I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow after I weed through all the photos I snapped. But it was goooood. Real goooood.
Goal #18 — Take One Adult Education Class
Not only did I sign up for a class with my neighbor {I’m keeping mum about it for now, but it’s in May}, but I signed up for a second adult education class {wooden spoon carving!} with my buddy Heather from Massachusetts. I have been wanting to learn how to carve a wooden spoon for a solid 5 years now and so I’m CRAZY excited about taking the class.
The spoon carving class is an all day affair and so I’m glad Heather is taking the class with me. I have a really hard time sticking with something if I’m not good at it right out of the gate, or rather if I know it’s something that is going to be a total waste of my time once I get going.
I can’t stand chit chat, and so the idea of being in an enclosed, and small class environment kind of freaks me out a little bit {it’s just my personality type, I know that now} but still, the need to bolt for the door is always a real possibility and well Heather, {like Mrs. HB.} she gets me. And so I feel better about going.
Goal #19 — Secret {for now} Holiday Project {On hold, because I don’t have the patience for it}
I’ve 100% decided to ditch my first idea. But, I feel good about my current idea {even if I have no idea when I’ll get started on it}. Show and tell date is still set for the first Friday in September.
Goal #20 — Create 12 Wowie Zowie Party Platters
3 down 9 to go. I want to make something special for Easter…. Any ideas?
Goal #21 — Visit 12 General Stores
2 down 10 to go and with a little luck, I’ll be able to knock store #3 off my list next week on date day. This past week The Girl and I visited Dan and Whit’s in Norwich, Vermont.
Goal #22 — Compete with Carole….. Get on My Front Door Game On
The giant carrot has been painted and hung on the front door where it will stay until Easter. After that, I plan to hang a wreath until it’s safe to break out the hanging flower baskets. And that my friends, is when the real fun begins. 🙂
Front Door Bling I’ve Made So Far This Year to Compete with Carole:
- Late January : Valentine Heart
- Late February : Shamrock
- Late March : Giant Carrot

Hi Amber,
Thank you for the link to the Reluctant Entertainer – – – what beautiful platters!
Kellie R says
Hi Mavis!
I was wondering if we’re allowed to know what your original Secret Project was, since you aren’t going to be pursuing it anymore (inquiring minds want to know lol). Also, you might want to keep some of those day-lilies and use the petals to garnish some of those fabulous salads you make. Pickled day-lily buds could also help with your goal to up your party-platter game. Just a thought 🙂 Have a great day!
Mavis Butterfield says
There is the tiniest chance I might try it in a different form, so for that reason I am going to hold off and saying what it was. Sorry.
Jennifer says
Every year I tell myself I will stay on top of the weeds. And then it gets hot, they grow SO FAST, and I get busy and well, then I have weeds all over. I think the weeds are native and everything else is having a hard time taking hold. Good luck!
E. Brower says
Totally checking out the #2 fave audio book. I didn’t know historical fixtion was my jam until I accidentally downloaded one and loved it! If you haven’t already given a listen, I HIGHLY recommend Last Days of Night (fascinating story about the race for indoor electricity between Westinghouse and Edison told from the perspective of his young and inexperienced lawyer) and America’s First Daughter (told from perspective of Thomas Jefferson’s eldest daugjter)
Before We Were Yours was a semi tough listen for me but I got through it.
Not historical fiction but The Secret Keeper I whipped through quickly good story!
Kathy G says
Add My Dear Hamilton to your list, same author as America’s First Daughter, I read it twice.
Jennifer says
Just downloaded Secrets of a Charmed Life onto my Kindle. Just wondering how your electric/power bill is different there using so much wood for heat compared to WA when I’m sure you didn’t use much wood, if any? Are there any other categories that are now much lower – or higher – compared to WA? We have moved frequently in our 26 years so I always enjoyed saying, “oh, electricity is so much more here” or “we don’t use near as much gas here compared to …”. Just being nosy.
Tricia says
Hi Mavis, How about making one of your mantels seasonal? I keep pictures about the same but change according to a Holiday or season? Tricia
Mel says
My (amended goal) was to make summer pants and shorts. I hemmed the pair of shorts I worked on last Sunday, so that’s done, and then I cut fabric for another pair. In total, I’ve made one pair of pants and one of shorts. I have a second pair of shorts in progress, and then I have fabric for four more pairs of pants. My other sewing goals (a quilt and a Christmas tree skirt) probably won’t happen until the summer due to various delays this spring.
I hear you about staying on top of the yard. I have weeded 7 beds, and I have 4 left. Three are easy raised beds, but the fourth is our kitchen herb garden, and it’s a monster. I cleared about 300 pinecones yesterday so we can clean up that area of the yard for maybe the first time ever. I’m really tired of the yard looking like a jungle.
For the Easter Party Platter: I vote bacon-wrapped asparagus and deviled eggs.
Sherry in Sumner says
That headboard would make a great signboard. Maybe you could name your farm.
Mel says
I was thinking the same thing! I thought for sure it was going to be repurposed as a sign for the driveway veggie stand.
Sherry in Sumner says
That headboard would make a great signboard out by your vegetables stand. Maybe you could also name your farm.
Diane says
I love the Bunny Express rug! So cute!
Have you gotten any comments from your neighbors about the front door decorating yet? The carrot is adorable. Is your neighbor decorating yet? What is she up too? From your comment today, I gather this is all a tune up for the upcoming flower season, can’t wait!
LaToya says
I love how that carrot turned out!
I’m working on Easter menu too and found this picture of an Easter platter that I have been motivatin’ over – – https://static1.squarespace.com/static/55a48acbe4b0be41599074c1/t/5abbd460f950b7364ce224eb/1522277158669/Easter+Cheese+Plate+1+Peeps – can’t wait to see what you come up with. I love your platters … (except the Good & Plenty … black licorice and anise things are not my thing).
Mavis Butterfield says
Wowza!
Pat says
Wow! Who would want to mess that up by eating it. It looks like art!
Pj says
Deviled eggs should go on the Easter party platter.
Carrie says
I was going to say the same thing! I always forget to make them throughout the year just for something different but I savor them at potlucks.
Kim says
The Bunny Express rug is incredibly lovely. For a second my brain went, “Is that a bunny riding a chicken…what???” Still don’t get it but shoot, that rug is gorgeous.
Rebecca in MD says
The bunny rug is adorable – – – love the colors as well as the design.
Really looking forward to your garden pictures this year in the new house. The shed is going to be fantastic once you install your gravel. So wish I had something like that on our property.
tia in boise says
I think pastel-colored Jordan almonds is a must for the Easter platter! Ooh–maybe an egg theme–only egg items or oval shapes….olives….
Helen in Meridian says
Or the Cadberry pastel candy coated dark chocolate little eggs. Peeps must be mixed in with your platter.
Lolly says
I think carving a wooden spoon will be so fun! And so nice to go to with a friend! The bunny riding a chicken rug made me laugh!! ….mine would be a lab chasing the chicken….or a blue heeler eating the rabbit….but maybe that’s why I don’t make the pretty rugs?!
I did ok on the goals this week. Except the walking. I need to start that habit, but it feels like I’m doing so many other new habits….it’s hard to add to them. Eek. (Now that my oldest will get her learner’s permit later this yr, I’m no longer applying my makeup in the car…oops….and I’m working on not being so anxious behind slow-poke drivers and getting impatient….and feeling claustrophobic behind them. These are huge habits to break….and then, getting places on time now that I need to spend time putting on the makeup at home and now that I’m not whizzing around people….)
Sewing went well this week. I loooove to make my own appliques and play with them, so I made up nesting bowl appliques, and played with fabric choices….and pressed + stitched them onto flour sack towels to give as gifts. (Two of my friends are pyrex collectors!) Then I played around and made strawberry appliques….red and pink fabrics for the berry, and different greens for the tops. I used most of those on some flour sack towels, too. In all, I think I made 9 dishtowels. A young woman who used to babysit and animal sit for us just found out she’s having a girl, so this week ahead I hope to make some cute baby things for her.
Savings went well. We got an unexpected check from our land mortgage people (I think a dividend check?), so that extra can be used for savings!
Hiding away was hard this week….I was so tired after 3 nights of insomnia. It just made it hard to get out at times.
I made extra taco meat on tues, and froze enough for 2 extra meals….and I delivered the meat + all the fixings to a family this week. I WANTED to make two other meals for them, but it was early in the week when I wasn’t sleeping, so just the tacos is all I had. (I did make brunswick stew last night, and we had enough for today’s lunch + 2 more dinners….which got frozen for later.)

Week 12 of 52:
1. Establish our farm- We moved to the farm the second week of February. We knew there was no cable here and we were to get DSL but actually Century Link does not have any phone lines available either until they splice some more! We have to use our phones as hotspots to use the internet on the computer. I’ve had to save the limited hotspot for my husband for when he works from home since Verizon only gives a certain amount per phone. At some point, Century Link will add more lines so we can get DSL. Century Link has the worst customer service we have ever experienced ten fold! It’s been unbelievable.
The house is lovely and they SW Repose grey walls are so calming. We have still been unboxing and organizing every day until bedtime. My kitchen has every cabinet and drawer lined and everything is organized. I finally have a kitchen that fits all my stuff since I love to cook and I use it all. We have also started a donation pile since a lot of items look out of place at this house.
We had to get special water filters installed and soon another system added to the crawl space so there went my most of the garden money.
2. Decide upon side hustles for farm money- planning to sell some honey.
3. Build a chicken coop- doubt it will happen this year.
4. Establish my bee/butterfly garden- Pricing out dirt and fencing. Not sure we can afford it now or later this year. One beehive died in January and the other flew away in February. The hive that died has two deeps full of honey that I need to take. The other hive was bee robbed and I didn’t know it when I saw all the activity. Both deeps are empty so I lost a lot of honey and money, as they were full before winter.
I have been cleaning up the garden area on warm weekends. Lots of construction trash blew there plus I had some plastic down to help kill weeds that fell apart and little pieces are everywhere. The box said for gardens but apparently it did not have UV protection like I thought it did.
5. Plan the fruit/vegetable/herb garden- went to the state farmer’s market yesterday to look at fruit trees but no one was there selling them yet. I’ll go back later.
6. Grow broomcorn and mammoth sunflowers- bought seeds
7. Create a bee lawn on the west side of the house- bought short white clover seeds but need to aerate so we can plant them.
8. Start a fruit orchard- wanting to plant some thing spring, especially figs since that is best to plant now rather than in the fall.
9. Create a sitting area near the beaver dam- think we will move a white chair bench down there.
10. Begin a wish/prayer tree on the path to the beaver dam- been deciding which tree based on the branches
11. Water bath can at least 10 items- planning for summer
12. Learn to use the pressure canner- planning for summer
13. Ferment at least 10 items- planning for summer
14. Try at least 10 new recipes- 1 of 10 done; planning rest for summer
15. Find and make a good Vietnamese beef pho recipe- planning for summer
16. Get new pantry very organized- DONE! Took me 3 trips to the Container Store to get enough bins. Everything is organized and it looks great. I got a tall step stool to keep in there to help me reach everything.
17. Organize art supplies/paint glass jar lids- half done; is organized but plan to change the lid color from red to either black or a warm mustard yellow
18. Hang art on the walls- have some sitting on the group against the walls to see how we like it before we hang it
19. Inventory all my cookbooks so I know what I have- the entire cookbook wall is organized and categorized but I’ll wait till summer to do the inventory
20. Make Christmas ornaments and garland
21. Make potpourri from foraged and garden items
22. Finish at least 2 embroidery projects- I organized my sewing bins but haven’t had time to stitch
23. Make at least three paintings- gathering ideas for this house; took a lot of photos I can use yesterday at Art in Bloom at the Raleigh art museum
24. Find furniture for the screened porch- found some we like at Costco online but it’s too expensive
25. Get my Instagram up and running again- after the house is done getting unboxed
Julia Park Tracey says
I would love to see your progress. Post your IG if you like?
Christa Hayden says
Love that you plan to do some spoon carving- that sounds like so much fun!!
Julie T says
I feel the same about taking classes or any other public event like the wine and paint parties. If I can’t be good at it from the start, I’m not doing to pursue it….not going to embarrass myself. Sounds dumb, I know, how will I ever learn anything new….oh well!
Betsy in MN says
Secrets of a Charmed Life was lent to me by my MIL, as it is (was) her favorite book. I enjoyed the book and have since read more books by Susan Meissner. I enjoyed As Bright as Heaven and A Sound Among the Tree, too.
I, too, can’t wait to get in the garden! I can almost see mine, the snow drifts are getting smaller…
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks for the book suggestions Betsy in MN.
Heather says
I have just started trying to learn how to,carve spoons! I’m struggling a bit as I’m trying to,teach myself and a trying to stay motivated even though I stink at it so far. I have SO many Pinterest pins that are keeping me determined or persevere. I would enjoy seeing your spoons and any tips or tricks you might learn. Enjoy!
Mavis Butterfield says
We will take photos of the process, hopefully that will give you a little inspiration.
Chris M says
Love the rug! It might just be my favorite of all you’ve done. If you don’t want the rhubarb in your kitchen garden, hopefully you can relocate it to a sunny spot. There is nothing finer than rhubarb custard pie (IMHO).
Jessica says
Why don’t you just upload all your photos to Google photos (free) and delete them off your phone and call it a day? That’s what I do. Just a thought!
Jen says
This has been such a beautiful spring and the crocus aren’t even up yet! I am sharing your excitement about getting back to outside work. We just finalized our new vegetable garden plans and it includes 3 espalier trees so I’ll be heading to Snug Harbor soon. Did they give you a timeline?
Alison says
Your Easter party platter must include deviled eggs and Cadbury eggs 🙂
Lisa Rostocki says
For the wowie zowie platter I wanted to tell you to try the ButterKase style cheese at Aldi! I just bought one the other day and my husband told me to go back and get two more! The cheese is delicious!! Love Aldi cheeses and this one is by far one of the best that I have gotten there(besides the cranberry cheddar and all the other ones too lol)
Mavis Butterfield says
I’ll look for it next time. Thanks Lisa.
Katie W says
I read Where’d You Go Bernadette last week and LOVED it. It’s one of my favorites of the year definitely. I’ve only been to Seattle once, for a day, before getting on a cruise ship. But it still had me laughing.
How do you feel about podcasts? I have a hard time paying attention with audio books, but seem to do better with podcasts when I’m working. I started listening to The History Chicks last week and I’m really enjoying it! It’s two ladies that research women in history (real and fictional, mostly real) and devote one episode to telling one woman’s story. I started with season 1, and you definitely have to take production quality with a grain of salt. They’ve been doing this for years now, so I’m assuming they get some things figured out with the quality 🙂
Ronda says
Loved the secret to a charmed life. I also got it on a whim and have been recommending it to everyone. The baker mama has all sorts of different boards listed on her instagram page that should give you some inspiration for Easter.
Carrie says
I started listening to This is a Story of a Happy Marriage and also stopped half way through. I realized this book isn’t for me; I don’t want to by an author! I also do not like short stories and this book is set up that way with each chapter on a different topic. One of my goals is to read/listen to 24 books so I hate that I wasted time listening to it but for the sack of my sanity I had to hit delete!
Mavis Butterfield says
Glad I wasn’t the only one. 🙂
Julia Park Tracey says
My goals are creeping along. I have not been able to run because of thick mud but I have walked a few days. My muffin top is still with me, despite my plans for a svelte spring. And it’s still raining, so running will not happen until the mud dries.
I’m about to embark on the first of my research trips this year (Travel – check!) and that’s always fun/exciting/adventurous/stressful.
Garden not doing much yet because so much rain, I can’t dig up the dirt. Again, on hold another two weeks for the weather to simmer down. All of our fruit trees bloomed and none were pollinated (few, I mean — I hope for at least a few pieces of fruit.) My bees flew away from autumn wildfire smoke, as did literally half the beehives in the county, according to the local beekeepers’ association. New queen will be ready late April. So we’re starting over, like @ChristaHayden.
I have not been out to any new restaurants, wineries, nor bakeries lately. Too much rain.
The socks I have been knitting are still at a pathetic 1 inch of top ribbing. No progress.
Taxes will happen April 6 and then I can relax and get into my spring jam.
But not literally jam. I need to make some jam for the county fair in July/August, but IDK what fruits I’ll have handy for making. However, we have to enter our names/categories in May. So it’s kind of a guessing game followed by a scramble. I got Best in Show last year for my dried strawberries, 1st for my blackberry jam, but only second place for honey. Trying again this year.
I have a friend who carved her own wooden crochet hooks. I treasure the one she gave me. I’ve also been taking free classes from the University of Strathclyde/FutureLearn. I took a genealogy class that was awesome, 6 weeks and not a penny in cost.
I adore the bunny on a rooster — so funny and cheerful. I look forward to seeing your new spoon, and your garden. You can offer up those extra day lilies on Freecycle, perhaps?
Cindy Brick says
Were you planning on offering Bunny Express as a pattern? I just went and looked on your Etsy shop, and it’s not there…what a charmer.
Also, did you do a post on the Christmas boxes your mom gave the fam this past year? If you did, I missed it… I get a huge kick out of her choices. (Sadly, they remind me of myself.) But she’s not as bad as my uncle, who would literally clear the table at a restaurant: salt/pepper, sugar, creamer — whatever he could get his hands on that was packaged. After all, he’d “paid for it,” he would say.
Mavis Butterfield says
The Bunny Express is not my pattern. Search instagram for MyGloryStars and you’ll see it.

I’m excited to give Secrets of a Charmed Life a go! I read Susan Meissner’s A Fall of Marigolds and at first found it a little slow to start but it turned out to be well worth the listen. I just recently finished Before We Were Yours and it is sad and sometimes a little hard to listen to considering it’s based on true accounts, but so good. Thanks for the inspiration – you keep my Holds list long on Overdrive
Can’t remember if I heard about these books from you or someone else, but if you haven’t read the Flavia de Luce series I think it’s worth trying (set in 1950s England manor house about a witty 10 year old girl genius scientist who ends up solving murder mysteries in a dry British humor style, funny and pretty quick easy reads, there are 7 or 8 in the series now – first one is The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie)
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks Melissa! I’ll check them out.
