My 22 Goals for 2019
Goal #1 — Spend More Time Doing What I Love
This past week was the perfect mix of working in the yard, hanging outside, and spending a little down time on a mini day trip with the HH. I wish I could hit the pause button though and have 72 hours to myself to all the little things I need to get done, done. 😉
Goal #2 — Garden, Garden, Garden
We only got two solid days of work done in the garden this week because we were using the excuse of it raining outside to stay in and work on other things the other five days. 😉 Funny how that happens, right?
In gardening news, the past 6 days we’ve woken up to a {what we think is} a mama turkey grazing in our yard. She spends about an hour in her favorite spot before flying off. At first we were annoyed by it, but now we find ourselves looking out the window to see if she is there. The HH has even begun to sprinkle a little cracked corn in the grass for her. 😉
Goal #3 — Plant an Orchard
We bought a Meyer lemon tree but have currently put planting fruit trees in the garden on hold until we get the back garden dug up and figure out what and where we want to plant them.
Goal #4 — Gussy Up the Potting Shed Done!
Goal #5 — Grow Enough Extra Vegetables, Eggs and Flowers to Earn $1500Â at my little roadside vegetable stand.
No veggies {of flowers yet} but I should be able to set out my seedlings in another 2 weeks.
Goal #6 — Finish Every Single Unfinished Rug Hooking Project in My Pattern Bin + 10 Things from back Issues of Magazines/Books I’ve Been Meaning to Make.Â
I updated my Etsy Shop on Friday with a few new hooked rug pieces and and a couple of kits as well. It took me about a month of working here and there and in between a few other pieces but I finally finished my Miss Henny and Miss Penny rug. and I just love the way it turned out!!
Only two of the eight rugs I finished though was in my pattern bin though, but I am confident I’ll get around to getting all those hooked up the the end of the year. Even if it is a little slow going because I keep coming up with new things I want to hook. 😉
I started the year off with:
- 73 rugs {now down to 53}
- 183 hooked flowers {finished 88, now down to 95}
- 10 “things” from back issues of magazines {finished 0}
Goal #7 — Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns {with at least half of them being large ones}
10 down, 2 to go! This past month I added 4 new patterns to my Etsy shop.
New rug hooking patterns I’ve created and added to My Etsy Shop this year:
- Miss Henny and Penny
- Miss Penny
- Simple Kitty
- Primitive Flowers
- 2 Fat Cats
- Annabell’s Big Day
- Old Fashioned Double Tulip
- Fat Brown Hen
- Busy Little Bee
- Queen Bee
Goal #8 — Split and Stack 2 Cords of Wood for Next WinterÂ
Nothing to report.
Goal #9 — Do Something with the 5,002 Photos on My Phone
I’ve been meaning to tell you about this place. I’ll put it on my to-do list for this week.
Goal #10 –Lose the Muffin Top
Working theory: Muffy will just fall off during gardening season. And Manny is my new workout buddy. 😉
Goal #11 — Run, Walk or Crawl a 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon
Nothing new to report.
Goal #12 — Read or Listen to 26 New Books {11 down, 15 to go}
Last week I finished Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate and man of man was it a heart wrenching. I new nothing about the Tennessee Children’s Home Society before I read the book and all the awful things that went on there. What a sad chapter in American History.
I am waiting my turn on the library wait list for the following audio books:
- The Long Winter
- The Four Tendencies
- Bunny Mellon {this will be my second time}
- Grateful American
Books I’ve Read or Listened to So Far This Year:
- Marilla of Green Gables #1 Favorite
- Before We Were Yours #2
- Secrets of a Charmed Life #3
- Where’d You Go, Bernadette #4Â
- Carnegie’s Maid #5
- The Alice Network #6
- The Shape of Mercy #7
- Will’s Red Coat #8
- Walden
- Finder’s Keepers
- Delicious!
- Following Atticus
Goal #13 — Try 52 New Recipes.
12 down, 40 recipes to go.
Last week I made a new Baked Bean recipe.
Goal #14 — Clean Up 52 Old Recipes on the Blog
Seven recipes down, 45 to go. I need to get going on this goal.
Goal #15 — Fill 100 Canning Jars 34 down, 66 to go.
Guess what I found at the recycle center this week! Wahooo.
So far this year I’ve I canned:
- 15 jars of Carrot Cake Jam
- 15 jars of Spiced Pear Jam {recipe coming soon}
- 4 jars of Almond Pears.
Goal #16 — Finish Furnishing Our House
We moved the dining room table back into the “keeping room” the other day because when we had it in the dining room it was nothing but a catch all space for my unfinished craft projects. 😉
In other news…. I seem to have amassed a collection of wooden potato mashers. Something I didn’t realize until we moved the table back into the room. I guess that means I can scratch “decorating the mantel in the keeping room” off my list now. Ha!
Furniture pieces I’m still on the hunt for:
Coffee table for the family room- Console, cupboard or sideboard for the one and only tv in our house which is in the family room. I could totally live without a television, but my husband says the tv stays.
Long rectangular table for the craft room.- Table for the formal dining room.
- 2 wing back chairs for the family room.
I’d also like to decorate the mantel in the keeping roomas well as put up some sort of decoration above the other 3 fireplaces in the house. I’m not one for a lot of things on the walls, but it would be nice to throw up a little pilgrim bling on the plaster.
Goal #17 – 52 Dates with the HH {16 down, 36 to go}
This past week we took a day trip meandering though the back roads of Southwest New Hampshire and into Vermont. We even drove by a house with a sign that read Butterfield Meadows and I made the HH pull over so I could take a picture. 😉
We also popped into an antique store…. That was selling animal bones for five dollars a piece. So you know, I guess there’s a first time for everything.
Goal #18 — Take One Adult Education ClassÂ
I’ll be taking my first class in a few hours! Giddy up! I’ll try and snap some pictures if it’s appropriate.
Goal #19 — Secret {for now} Holiday ProjectÂ
Hey! I ordered a few supplies and now just need to get the rest of them before I can get started. The HH said I should have made them for Mother’s Day…. But I still think they will be fabulous for Christmas gifts. 😉
Goal #20 — Create 12 Wowie Zowie Party Platters
3 down, 9 to go.
Goal #21 — Visit 12 General Stores
5 down 7 to go.
This past week we stopped by 3 {!!} general stores, one of which was Dodge’s Store in New Boston, New Hampshire {I’ll wait to list the other two stores until after I write about them}. New Boston is a really pretty town, with rolling hills and lot’s of farms and it’s only when you begin to drive around the corner down into the town center that something feels a little off…. Like maybe you are in a Stephen King novel all the sudden or something. {My husband’s words, not mine}. 😉
It’s pretty though…. but there is most definitely a vibe there that we just can’t seem to shake. This was the second time we’ve driven though the downtown area, and both times, felt the same. SPOOKY. The Dodge’s Store though, it’s pretty cool.
So far this year we’ve visited:
- Dodge’s Store in New Boston, New Hampshire
- Zeb’s General Store in North Conway, New Hampshire
- Dan and Whit’s in Norwich, Vermont
- Hussey’s General Store in Windsor, Maine
Goal #22 — Compete with Carole….. Get on My Front Door Game On
Nothing new to report. But I am looking forward to putting up a hanging basket later this month.
Front Door Bling I’ve Made So Far This Year to Compete with Carole:
- Late January : Valentine Heart
- Late February : Shamrock
- Late March : Giant Carrot

Before we were yours. Yes a hard read. My Mom was in an orphanage for about 7 years during those years and her little brother who was also in the orphanage “disappeared”. She said he didn’t show up at the fence one day to meet her, the girls and boys were separated, and he was about 4 years old. I really liked this book because it made me want to ask a ton of questions but my Mom passed a couple of years ago. Only her oldest sister, who is 91 now, and the little brother are alive. The little brother was brought back to her mother when he was 16 because he was in trouble with drugs and alcohol and became too difficult for the adoptive family to handle. So many things unspoken, so many questions unanswered. And Secrets of a charmed life, WOW, what a great listen. I love British accents and this reader and book were awesome and kept me wanting more to the very end too!

Popped into this blog and saw your last name is Butterfield. My husband is a Butterfield descendant. His first known ancestor in this country was Benjamin who arrived in Mass. about 1635.

My Mother in Law, Shirley was a Tennessee Childs Home Society /Georgi Tannstolen baby. She died last year at 86, and we searched all of her life for her biological family. She suffered from many health issues all of her life, and even after all of the do it yourself DNA and hired private detectives, we were never able to find her family.
She was adopted by Jewish parents, told that she was a Jewish baby (was not we are sure) and was an only child. Her adoptive Father died young and raised by her seamstress Mother in Des Moines Iowa. She went on the have 5 children, raised them Jewish, and had a pretty good life. She always suffered from knowing of her past. She daleth with the demons that left . She was the sweetest and most loving soul. A talented seamstress and knitter ( I inherited her yarn, I am warren hard to honor her) Here is an article written about her in the Los Angelos Times:https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1996-09-18-ls-45004-story.html

Sandy, This a heart-breaking story. The LA Times story was incredibly sad to read, especially the very last part about the name on the license plate of Shirley’s car. I just can’t imagine. Thank you for sharing.

Love the fact that The Long Winter is on your list to read. I used to read the Little House on the Prairie books to my daughter when she was little. The Long Winter is, by far, my favorite. In fact, I read it every winter when the snow is feet deep on the ground and an afternoon in front of the fire beckons. Such a great series! I think it’s where my love for all things pioneer stems from….veggie gardening, canning, knitting, etc.

Those wonderful wooden mashers are often used to make sauerkraut! That’s how I use mine anyway, and it was made especially with that exercise in mind. They look beautiful on your mantel.
