My 22 Goals for 2019
Goal #1 — Spend More Time Doing What I Love
The snuggle puggle has been more clingy lately and following us from room to room and all she want’s to do is cuddle with the HH which is so very sweet. Miss Lucy, she just has the kindest soul. How did we get so lucky?
Goal #2 — Garden, Garden, Garden
Things are looking good in the garden! I need to get out there and weed again {my current working schedule is to spend half a day weeding in the garden every 2 weeks which I like much better than trying to get out there early everyday which doesn’t seem to work for me these days}. I feel so much more relaxed this summer than I did last year and that’s a good thing!
Goal #3 — Plant an Orchard
We currently have 2 apple trees and Miss Lemon. I think it might be getting a little too late in the season to plant fruit trees but that doesn’t mean I can’t still make a trip to the nursery and buy a few to plant in the fall. I need to make that a priority.
Goal #4 — Gussy Up the Potting Shed Done!
Goal #5 — Grow Enough Extra Vegetables, Eggs and Flowers to Earn $1500 at my little roadside vegetable stand.
The biggest money maker last summer where the pumpkins and corn stalks I sold at my little veggie stand and so far, the pumpkin patch is looking pretty darn good if I do say so myself.
I had a little trouble getting the zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes and spinner gourds going this year {thanks to Mr. Peter Rabbit and a hot few days in the greenhouse when I forgot to water the plant starts}, but those have all been replanted and the garden is looking good and on schedule now for this time of year.
Goal #6 — Finish Every Single Unfinished Rug Hooking Project in My Pattern Bin + 10 Things from back Issues of Magazines/Books I’ve Been Meaning to Make.
I finished 0 rugs from my pattern bin this past week. I did finish a special order though so there was that. I am supposed to have this giant turkey rug {and the pattern for said turkey rug} available for my next Etsy shop update this Friday at 6pm. It’s kind of a big rug though, much bigger than the chicken rug that took me three months working on here and there to finish.
So although I am HIGHLY optimistic that I can get it done in time {and by highly optimistic what I really meant to say was totally delusional} if the ONLY thing I do next week is eat, sleep and work on pulling 10 million hand dyed wool strips though a piece of linen, I just might be able to make my {self imposed} deadline.
Only time will tell. Also, in case you are wondering, I am showing you the BACK of the rug in this photo because the pattern is drawn on the front and why would I want to show you what it’s supposed to look like when it’s more fun to watch it come alive. But seriously, all that white space…. I’ve got a LOT of hooking to do!
I started the year off with:
- 73 rugs in my pattern bin {now down to 48}
- 183 hooked flowers {finished 120, now down to 63}
- 10 “things” from back issues of magazines {finished 0}
Goal #7 — Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns {with at least half of them being large ones}
11 patterns down, 1 to go! So far this year I’ve added 13 beginner rug hooking kits to my Etsy shop and 11 new rug hooking patterns.
New rug hooking patterns I’ve created and added to My Etsy Shop this year:
- Double Nantucket Whale Runner
- Miss Henny and Penny
- Miss Penny
- Simple Kitty
- Primitive Flowers
- 2 Fat Cats
- Annabell’s Big Day
- Old Fashioned Double Tulip
- Fat Brown Hen
- Busy Little Bee
- Queen Bee
Rug Hooking Kits
- Busy Little Bee {in 2 different colors}
- Folk Art Heart
- Small Nantucket Whale
- Primitive Crow
- Miss Robin {in 2 different colors}
- Simple Kitty
- Primitive Flowers
- Sunflowers
- A Basket of Spring Posies
- Fat Brown Hen
- Chicky’s Garden
Goal #8 — Split and Stack 2 Cords of Wood for Next Winter
The side yard and wooded areas have fill in {with ticks and snakes and poison ivy and other creepy crawlies} and so any thought of chopping down trees for firewood has been put on the back burner until fall.
Goal #9 — Do Something with the 5,002 Photos on My Phone
A $2,000 fine. WOWZA! Better not be bringing any banana peels from home to toss at the park.
Goal #10 –Lose the Muffin Top
No comment.
Goal #11 — Run, Walk or Crawl a 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon
I am on house arrest for the next 60 – 90 days so sadly I won’t be able to participate in any sort of fun run this summer. But hey, there is always the fall, right? 😉 Sorry, I can’t go… I’m waiting for our baby turtles to hatch has got to be one of the best excuses ever!! 🙂
Goal #12 — Read or Listen to 26 New Books {14 down, 12 to go}
Last night I started listening to The Aviator’s Wife on audiobook. I was desperate to have something on in the background while I worked and since it had great reviews, I thought I’d give it a try. I’m only about 30 minutes into the book but so far, so good. Historical fiction… it’s my new favorite thing.
I am waiting my turn on the library wait list for the following audio books:
Books I’ve Read or Listened to So Far This Year:
- Marilla of Green Gables #1 Favorite
- The Great Alone #2
- Before We Were Yours #3
- Secrets of a Charmed Life #4
- Where’d You Go, Bernadette #5
- Carnegie’s Maid #6
- The Alice Network #7
- The Shape of Mercy #8
- Will’s Red Coat #9
- Big Little Lies #10
- Bunny Mellon {Doesn’t count because it was my second time}
- Walden
- Finder’s Keepers
- Delicious!
- Following Atticus
Goal #13 — Try 52 New Recipes.
16 down, 36 recipes to go.
I tried a new casserole recipe this week!
Goal #14 — Clean Up 52 Old Recipes on the Blog
8 down, 45 to go. {Totally slacking on this goal but will work on it more this fall.}
Goal #15 — Fill 100 Canning Jars 34 down, 66 to go.
I am looking forward to a restful week with only 2 goals: finish the turkey rug, and pop down to the local farm stand for some fresh fruit and hopefully can something. I wasn’t going to make strawberry jam this year, but I might make a batch and send it to Monkey Boy because it’s his favorite.
So far this year I’ve I canned:
- 15 jars of Carrot Cake Jam
- 15 jars of Spiced Pear Jam
- 4 jars of Almond Pears.
Goal #16 — Finish Furnishing Our House
No new treasures this week.
Furniture pieces I’m still on the hunt for:
Coffee table for the family room- Console, cupboard or sideboard for the one and only tv in our house which is in the family room. I could totally live without a television, but my husband says the tv stays.
Long rectangular table for the craft room.- Table for the formal dining room.
- 2 wing back chairs for the family room.
I’d also like to decorate the mantel in the keeping roomas well as put up some sort of decoration above the other32 fireplaces in the house. I’m not one for a lot of things on the walls, but it would be nice to throw up a little pilgrim bling on the plaster.
Goal #17 – 52 Dates with the HH {21 down, 31 to go}
We explored the town of Exeter, New Hampshire {what a cool city!}. I’ll tell you all about it on Monday.
Goal #18 — Take One Adult Education Class Done {I’ve taken 2!}
- I’m keeping the first class I took with my neighbor top secret for now {because it is directly related to my one of my secret holiday projects}
- Spoon Carving Class with Heather.
I worked on some more slipware pieces this past week {mostly tiles}, trying to get the hang of it but it’s been a little slow going. I know I need to take a proper pottery class. The tricky part for me so far is trying to figure out just how thick the slip should be and also the whole drawing with slip aspect.
That, and my kiln is super tiny {I have the little Skutt 614-3 hobby version} and so I am limited on the size of my pieces {I think the widest thing I can fit in there is 11″}. So there’s enough room for a dinner plate, but not for platters or pie dishes.
Goal #19 — Secret {for now} Holiday Project – Keeping mum about it until early September
Goal #20 — Create 12 Wowie Zowie Party Platters
4 down, 8 to go. Seriously slacking in this department. Maybe once berry season hits?
Goal #21 — Visit 12 General Stores
5 down 7 to go.
So far this year we’ve visited:
- Harrisville General Store
- Dodge’s Store in New Boston, New Hampshire
- Zeb’s General Store in North Conway, New Hampshire
- Dan and Whit’s in Norwich, Vermont
- Hussey’s General Store in Windsor, Maine
Goal #22 — Compete with Carole….. Get on My Front Door Game On
Still on the hunt for the flag bunting… where could it be? Painting the front door {red} is on the HH’s to-do list this summer and once the 4th is over, I think I’ll have to start bugging him about it. Also on the list, building one of those barn/storm doors to cover the front door during the winter months. 😉
Front Door Bling I’ve Made So Far This Year to Compete with Carole:
- Late January : Valentine Heart
- Late February : Shamrock
- Late March : Giant Carrot
- May: White wave petunia hanging basket
- June: Tin Star

I’ve only been to Hobby Lobby twice and both times close to the 4th of July and saw bunting there. If you have one close by you might want to try looking there.

Last week’s mini goals were:
1) Finish organizing work stuff and decluttering the sewing room (Done!)
2) Defrost and clean the freezers (Done!)
3) Increase time on treadmill (Done!)
4) Clean out the basement store room (Done!)
5) Put the finished part of the basement back in order (Done!)
It’s been a long week of moving heavy furniture and tools, but I’m nearly done putting the entire house back in order, so I’m excited for the final stretch of organizing. For this week:
1) Organize the living room.
2) Label work files and basement cubbies (that I organized last week)
3) Declutter the dining room.
4) Organize my husband’s beekeeping supplies
5) Organize the last bathroom cabinet
7) Organize the last few kitchen cabinets
After this week, I’ll switch to cleaning projects (cleaning the oven, sealing granite, etc.) so the whole house will be thoroughly decluttered, organized, and clean.

In Colonial times, I believe that a red door signified a boarding house/rooms for rent and the candles in the lower level windows indicated that food/drink was still being served. And I love the excuse that ‘I can’t run – waiting for my baby turtles to hatch’ is about as unique as you can get. I love the examples you have shown so far of your slip ware. Too small a kiln – you just might have to upgrade!!!!!!

Seriously, sign up for the 4 day potting class with the artist you admire. It’ll be fun, expand your horizons and knock you out of your daily routine and comfort zone.
Rebecca in MD says
If you have an Aldi nearby, check them out for the bunting. Here at my local Aldi in MD they have patriotic bunting on sale for $3.99 each until June 25.

Throwing away banana peels!?! OMGosh, Mavis, dig a hole and put it to work in your garden!!

My goals:
1. Sew: yes, made one bib and worked on almost 3 dozen others; they just need the ties sewn on.
2. Making the bibs helped to use up my stash.
3. I went through two bags, looking for half done projects and instead found fabric scraps that I could easily let go. They are on the out pile. (Insert happy dance here. Although I can not dance. See #4 for why.)
4. Walk every day: No , but I went and had the shot in my knee on Friday. Wiped me out for Saturday. However, it is feeling somewhat better today.
5. No new recipe this week either. I think I did it only one or two times this year. Sigh.
6. I have been doing cleaning and decluttering.
7. Had a date day with my husband again this week.
8. Read More: finished all of the library books and started on another book from my stash.
9. Retired!

I RAN A 3K RACE!!!!!! I did it because you inspired me. I did it because I have never run a race in my life. I ran the whole way. Well, I trotted. But I didn’t walk.
Thank you, Mavis. Bucket list item checked off.
xx,
Julia

Trotting TOTALLY counts! Way to go Julia!
