My 22 Goals for 2019
Goal #1 — Spend More Time Doing What I Love
Keeping cool and sharing ice cream with Miss Lucy puggle.
Goal #2 — Garden, Garden, Garden
I’m happy to report that I am making progress on getting the garden weeded. I need to dig out my snow pants though so I can finish up the big vegetable plot and weed the raspberry patch.
The basil plants though…. Wowza! We should be swimming in it in about another week. I’m looking forward to making boatloads of pesto and stockpiling it in the freezer for this winter.
Goal #3 — Plant an Orchard {Calling it Quits on this one for this year.}
I think I’ll stick to citrus until I can get the bug situation figured out.
Goal #4 — Gussy Up the Potting Shed Done!
Goal #5 — Grow Enough Extra Vegetables, Eggs and Flowers to Earn $1500 at my little roadside vegetable stand.
If I can’t get the rest of the garden weeded, I’ll be lucky to hit $500. I had truly planned on setting up the veggie stand in late spring and selling fresh eggs, but we’ve been eating them all and I didn’t plant much in the way of salad greens this year so I’m kind of stuck waiting for the tomatoes to ripen and the pumpkins to grow. Oh well.
Goal #6 — Finish Every Single Unfinished Rug Hooking Project in My Pattern Bin + 10 Things from back Issues of Magazines/Books I’ve Been Meaning to Make.ย
I finished 2 patterns from my pattern bin this past week {mini flowers basket pillows} and completed 2 other pillows plus 6 of my hooked rug flowers for my Etsy shop update on Friday. I’m getting close to the half way point on finishing the project from my pattern bin and that feels good. There are SO MANY new projects I want to work on…. so keeping true to the original plan is hard. ๐
I started the year off with:
- 73 rugs in my pattern bin {now down to 41}
- 183 hooked flowers {finished 126, now down to 57}
- 10 “things” from back issues of magazines {finished 0}
Goal #7 — Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns {with at least half of them being large ones} DONE!
So far this year I’ve added 12 new rug hooking patterns and 13 beginner rug hooking kits to my Etsy shop and I’m hoping to add a few more before the year is over.
New rug hooking patterns I’ve created and added to My Etsy Shop this year:
- Tullia and Thomas Turkey
- Double Nantucket Whale Runner
- Miss Henny and Penny
- Miss Penny
- Simple Kitty

- Chicky’s Garden
Goal #8 — Split and Stack 2 Cords of Wood for Next Winterย
Nothing yet.
Goal #9 — Do Something with the 5,002 Photos on My Phone
Down to 3941 photos.
Goal #10 –Lose the Muffin Top
Oddly enough I am down 6 pounds from the beginning of the year. Half of which I think was sweat from having to garden all bundled up the last few weeks. My pants still fit the same though… so maybe I’m shrinking. Because don’t you start to do that when you get older? Lose an inch or two of height?
Goal #11 — Run, Walk or Crawl a 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon
I’m on turtle baby watch. Sorry Bob, I can’t do a marathon this week. Bummer.
Goal #12 — Read or Listen to 26 New Books {15 down, 11 to go}
Guess who hit the jackpot at the recycle center this week. Me!
I am waiting my turn on the library wait list for the following audio books:
- The Gown <– I am very excited about this! Thanks for the recommendation. ๐
- Grateful American

- Marilla of Green Gablesย #1 Favorite
- The Great Alone #2
- The Aviator’s Wife #3
- Before We Were Yours #4
- Secrets of a Charmed Life #5
- Where’d You Go, Bernadette #6
- Carnegieโs Maid #7

Goal #13 — Try 52 New Recipes.
18 down, 34 recipes to go.
Goal #14 — Clean Up 52 Old Recipes on the Blog
9 down, 44 to go. I’ll get crackin’ once fall {and cooler temps} come around.
Goal #15 — Fill 100 Canning Jars 41 down, 59 to go.
Still waiting for figs to hit the farm stands. Also, my favorite peach growers open their stand at the end of the month! have you ever tried a John Boy peach? They were my favorite last year.
So far this year I’ve I canned:
- 7 jars of Strawberry Jam
- 15 jars of Carrot Cake Jam
- 15 jars of Spiced Pear Jamย
- 4 jars of Almond Pears.
Goal #16 — Finish Furnishing Our House
Last week I picked up a free 6 board chest at the recycle center and we decided to use it as a tv stand. Now I just have a few more things to find. This week though The Girl came a long with me a snagged herself a set of dishes. ๐ Now all she needs to find are some baking sheets and a few baking dishes and I think she has enough to fill a kitchen {if she ever decides to move out someday}.
Furniture pieces I’m still on the hunt for:
Coffee table for the family roomConsole, cupboard or sideboard for the one and only tv in our house which is in the family room. I could totally live without a television, but my husband says the tv stays.Long rectangular table for the craft room.- Table for the formal dining room.
- 2 wing back chairs for the family room.
I’d also like to decorate the mantel in the keeping roomas well as put up some sort of decoration above the other32 fireplaces in the house. I’m not one for a lot of things on the walls, but it would be nice to throw up a little pilgrim bling on the plaster.
Goal #17 – 52 Dates with the HH {23 down, 29 to go}
The HH and I were up in the Lake Winnipesaukee area for a family event and while we were driving around in the area we stopped at 2 of the most amazing garden centers. I took oodles of pictures and am looking forward to sharing them with you next week.
Goal #18 — Take One Adult Education Class Done {I’ve taken 2!}
- I’m keeping the first class I took with my neighbor top secret for now
- Spoon Carving Class with Heather.
Looking in to taking class #3 with my neighbor!! ๐ ๐ ๐
Goal #19 — Secret {for now} Holiday Project
The big reveal… Friday, September 13th, 2019.
Goal #20 — Create 12 Wowie Zowie Party Platters
4 down, 8 to go.
Goal #21 — Visit 12 General Stores
7 down 5 to go.
We checked out the Squam Lake MarketPlace which is in Holderness, NH where On Golden Pond was filmed but the store was so crowded, taking pictures of the inside of the store would have been too intrusive, so I passed. I’d love to visit this area in the fall though. Squam Lake was much less touristy and crowed than Lake Winnipesaukee was and I liked it a lot better.
So far this year we’ve visited:
- Squam Lake Marketplace
- Harrisville General Store
- Dodge’s Store in New Boston, New Hampshire
- Zeb’s General Store in North Conway, New Hampshire
- Dan and Whit’s in Norwich, Vermont
- Hussey’s General Store in Windsor, Maine
Goal #22 — Compete with Carole….. Get on My Front Door Game On
The bunting is still up. ๐ The HH said Independence day is over and it should come down but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with leaving the star and bunting up all summer. What do you think?
Also, I put Mrs. HB on alert that when/if she comes to visit me later this summer, she’ll be making a new wreath for the door {and we all know she LOVES decorating her front porch, so I know it will be a good one}.
Front Door Bling I’ve Made So Far This Year to Compete with Carole:
- Late January : Valentine Heart
- Late February : Shamrock
- Late March : Giant Carrot
- May: White wave petunia hanging basket
- June/July: Tin Star and Flag Bunting

How about YOU? What are your goals for 2019? If you told us about them HERE, check in! We want to know how you are doing. Because seriously, it’s so much easier to get those goals checked off your list when you have people rooting for you! ๐

I think you are too young to start shrinking. I did notice as I aged that my weight seemed to shift around to different places!
Mel says
I think you can leave the bunting up through July since it was for 4th of July, but I’d maybe go with a sunflower cutout for August and September. Or an ice cream cone cutout. ๐
I didn’t get quite as far as I wanted on some of last week’s goals due to rain two days and an awful headache one day, but I got much further than I planned on others. Last week I wanted to
1) Dust the ceilings and walls (Nope–maybe today)
2) Wash the throw rugs. (Done!)
3) Dehydrate my cayenne peppers. (Nope–too humid)
4) Trim and clean garlic for storage. (Started!)
5) Make a run to the dump. (Done!)
6) Maintain or increase time on treadmill. (Done! I increased.)
7) Make 25 freezer meals. (Done! I actually made 47)
8) Make 10 freezer breakfasts. (Done! I actually made 33)
This week, I want to
1) Deal with the garlic and cayennes from last week (assuming the rain and humidity aren’t as bad).
2) Get to the dusting from last week.
3) Wash the larger area rugs.
4) Maintain or increase time on the treadmill.
5) Make 25 more freezer meals.
6) Make 8-10 more freezer breakfasts.
7) Make graham crackers (for smores) and bread (for BLTs and bruschetta)
8) Set up the guest bathroom with new towels, shower curtain, etc.
9) Start back-to-school shopping.

Oh your basil!!!! I am so super keen to go way overboard in planting next season. I NEED to make way more pesto. I’ve finished what I made and that makes me a sad person!! ๐
Are you going to put some of your jams/sauces on the stand too?
My best selling veggies on the stand are def. tomatoes but people go mad over the organic garlic and love the home grown corn.
I am not getting anywhere in our garden. Its filthy weather out there. I’ve been making soap instead of getting cold and muddy ๐ At least I smell nicer haha
Keep up the great work!
Susan says
I have been in pesto-making mode for the last couple of weeks.
I am making Oregano/ Lemon Balm Pesto and Nasturtium Pesto (half flowers-half leaves)
I use walnuts instead of pinenuts. Pinenuts are really expensive here!
I freeze it in ice cube trays. The standard ice cube “slot” holds 1 ounce of pesto. 4 cubes = 1/2 cup – enough for a large plate of spiralized zucchini! ๐
Lisa Millar says
Susan – that sounds amazing!
And yes… pine nuts are scandalously expensive here too!! I use cashews!
Thanks for mentioning the ice cube tray volumes – I am a bit hit and miss knowing how much I need for a meal!!
Kara says
Great finds at the recycling center. My favorite part of your posts!
Ps. I get bite up like crazy in the summer and was told Johnson’s baby creamy oil (with aloe and vitamin e) is effective against mosquitos. I’ve tried it a few times and I think it helps! It’s in a green tube and sold in the baby aisle at Target, Walmart etc.
LaToya says
The star can be up forever because your house has that Americana vibe to it.
The bunting through July.
I was actually going to mention the other day that all that bundling up in the heat should make you lose some weight. One of the tricks at the gym is to layer on sweatshirts when you’re doing your workout for additional sweating because sweating out liquid makes you lose water weight.
I am back on track with my revised mid-year goals.
Pacing on my reading … and my weight loss. I’ve been using the free online MyFitnessPal and it’s been super helpful in keeping me on track and being accountable for all the crap that I put in my mouth.
Kim says
I think the bunting looks so nice on your house, I’d leave it up until it’s time for Halloween decorations.
Teri says
I love those dishes! Did the girl get them at the recycle center? Great find!
Nancy W says
Always love reading your progress on your goals. If you enjoyed reading The Alice Network try her latest book The Huntress, I couldn’t put it down!
Mable says
I am sure you know this, but just in case not…your basil looks tall (might just be the camera angle). If you pinch off the tops, you will get tons of side shoots and end up with a nice bushy plant and much more basil/pesto.
Gigi says
It looks like the dishes may have a silver/metal band. Beautiful, but may not be microwaveable.
Marsha says
I see your struggles with bugs and never comment. I have a Thermocell that works wonderfully at keeping bugs away. I have the basic model.
Diane says
I was just going to suggest the same! There are hundreds of excellent reviews on the Cabelaโs website for these. Way better than sweating to death in Winter Park is and snow pants!
Torry says
My goals:
(1) Sewing: made a ton of Barbie dresses which (2) used up a lot of my stash and was (3) part of my finish half done projects. (4) I have been walking, but not (5) making new recipes. (6) I’m still doing well on cleaning and decluttering. (7) had a date day with my husband. (8) And I’m making great head way on reading done my books and magazines. I’ll continue to try to work on my goals and will have more time to do that since I did decide to retire.

If I had goals they would be yours! I finally found a sister!
