My 22 Goals for 2019
Goal #1 — Spend More Time Doing What I Love
SURPRISE SURPRISE! I will give you exactly ONE GUESS as to where I am right now.
Goal #2 — Garden, Garden, Garden
Note to self: Save all pruning until late fall and sell the trimmings to local nurseries. 😉
Goal #3 — Plant an Orchard {Calling it Quits on this one.}
Miss Lemon’s babies were starting to get fragrant and soft so I decided to harvest them. I’m not sure what we’ll use them for yet, but I’ll let you know.
Goal #4 — Gussy Up the Potting Shed Done!
I gussied up the potting shed at our old house, but I would like to add some sort of “potting station” to the backyard here somewhere, but I’m not sure where I would put it yet. I think the HH is going to have a busy spring though because I’ve got a boatload of projects for him to build. 😉
Goal #5 — Grow Enough Extra Vegetables, Eggs and Flowers to Earn $1500 at my little roadside vegetable stand.
It was totally my intention to grow a ton of fruits and vegetables to sell at the farm-stand when I made my list of goals for 2019 last winter, but then we moved. So, that whole goal was sort of a bust.
Goal #6 — Finish Every Single Unfinished Rug Hooking Project in My Pattern Bin + 10 Things from back Issues of Magazines/Books I’ve Been Meaning to Make.Â
Well I didn’t finish any rugs this week but I did start one plus added a few more bundles of wool to my my Etsy shop. I think in about another week, I’ll finally get to plant myself on the couch and start up hooking in earnest again. I’ve missed it, and with the move and so many other projects needing my attention have found it hard to find time to hook.
But with gardening season over for the year, and a nearly finished family room to relax in, I’m ready to tackle my list of hooking projects.
- 73 rugs in my pattern bin {now down to 27}
- 183 hooked flowers {finished 150, now down to 33}
- 10 “things” from back issues of magazines {finished 0}
Goal #7 — Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns {with at least half of them being large ones} DONE!

Goal #10 –-Lose the Muffin Top Done!
Sweet digity!
Goal #11 — Run, Walk or Crawl a 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon
Now all that’s left is the Tea and Pastry half marathon. We’ve got 6 weeks until the end of the year, right? 😉
Goal #12 — Read or Listen to 26 New Books {21 down, 5 to go}
Currently listening to My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrik Backman and so far I like it. It seems like the last few audiobooks I’ve started, have been duds and I’ve ended up deleting them about an hour or so into the story. This one is pretty quirky so far, and fun. We’ll see where it goes.

Goal #13 — Try 52 New Recipes.
35 down, 17 recipes to go. Last week was a busy week! I shared a recipe for Cheddar Chive Scones plus, the HH and I tried 2 new recipes {a tomato soup and a pumpkin cake} last week and I’ll get those on the blog soon. With 17 recipes left to go… November and December are going to be tasty.
Goal #14 — Clean Up 52 Old Recipes on the Blog
9 down, 44 to go. I should get moving… because at this rate, I’ll be in the kitchen cooking the entire month of December. The poor bakeries. They’re going to suffer because I won’t be able to leave the house.
Goal #15 — Fill 100 Canning Jars 48 down, 52 to go.

- 15 jars of Spiced Pear JamÂ
- 4 jars of Almond Pears.
Goal #16 — Finish Furnishing Our House
We haven’t even finished the family room yet {the plan is to get it done by the end of the month} but I’ve already jumped ahead and started to look kitchen stuff already. The HH thought a set of new dishes would be nice, but the only ones I’ve found that I like so far are 10 million dollars. And totally don’t have a beachy, New England vibe to them. But oh boy are they HAPPY.
I saw these plain Jane plates at the thrift store {a set of 6 dinner plates, salad plates and bowls} and showed them to the HH. He promptly said “No, I’m not buying some dead person’s plates.”
What a peach that one.
Goal #17 – 52 Dates with the HH {39 down, 13 to go}
The Portland Head Light and a trip to the LL Bean Home Store {there are SO MANY locally made products in there!}. Oh how I love the rocky coast of Maine.

- Mini pottery lesson {I loved it! and now I want to sign up for a full class}
Goal #19 — Secret Holiday Project{s}
One of my secret holiday projects this year was block print towels and another was to make a few seed packet wreaths. The Tea Bag Trees weren’t really a secret, but more of pretty skippy idea I wanted to save for the holidays.

Hi Mavis! When I buy something new (dishes, flatware, glasses, etc.) I donate the old set to a thrift store. Think that’ll help your argument? Good progress on your goals! I have a guess where you are but I’ll not spoil it.
Kari says
I bought the same jammies this week! Best ones ever, I’m in love!
Wendy Steele says
Kari, where did you purchase this jammies?—I’m in love also!!!L
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Wendy, Mrs. HB picked them up at Costco for us.
Carrie says
I saw you at Costco this week! Maybe browsing for a picky bit platter. It has been a super dry November and apparently it saves all the rain for your visit. Welcome home!
Diana says
I had to put my glasses on so I could get a better view of the jammie pic! HA! LOVE that you’re with Mrs. HB. You two have a blast and I’m looking forward to a play-by-play of your fun time together! Enjoy!

Our Meyer lemon only produces about 2 lemons per year. Last year I used them to make Garden & Gun’s sour orange pie for Thanksgiving (not actually sour), lemon salad dressing, and a lemon glaze for gingerbread muffins.
On Friday, I bought what I sincerely hope is the last of the fabric needed for my Christmas tree skirt. I’ve had terrible luck with fabric this year, so I really hope this is it. If nothing else goes wrong, I should finally be able to finish it over Thanksgiving week, right in the nick of time for Christmas decorating.

Are you visiting Mrs. HB in Washington state? Have a fantastic time!
Laura says
LOVE those plates, mugs etc from Anthropologie! Maybe you could mix them in with a complementary and less expensive set? The ones you found at the thrift store would go well but I get HH’s point. 🙂
Julie says
Visiting Mrs. Hillbilly!! Have fun!! (I hope that’s a fresh dental pick!!:) ) JK
Paula Gooding says

Mavis Butterfield says
Amazon. Look up stone and beam buffalo check chair. We bought 2 and they are wonderful chairs. Well made, good size and I highly recommend them.
Wendy Steele says
Well, now I want to buy those jammies too!! Is there a brand name or store or link available to purchase them?
Laura McK says
Dear Mavis,
Earlier this year, I was inspired by you to set a Goal for 2019 – Read 12 nonfiction books this year. I continue plodding toward that goal. I have just finished reading a book entitled “Plain and Simple: A Woman’s Journey to the Amish” by Sue Bender. I bought this book 4 years ago when embarking on a move that took me a few hours away from family, friends and my familiar and beloved San Francisco Bay area. It was not the right time to read the book. But now I know this is the perfect time to read this book as I struggle with trying to retire from my busy professional life ( for the third time). You can get it on Amazon in many formats and I believe you will love it. Laura

How did you lose the muffin top? I missed it! I have my own ice-cream induced muffy to lose.
Julie says
Do you have a dollar store in your area? I think most things in thrift stores are just regular donations. I mean if someone did die they probably didn’t do it right on top of the dishes. You should splurge on the ones you like.
