My 22 Goals for 2019
Goal #1 — Spend More Time Doing What I Love
Holy canolies people, only a month to go until the end of the year. Can you believe it? I woke up this morning and it was 15 degrees outside. According to the weatherman the snow is supposed to start falling around 2 pm today and continue to fall until Tuesday. EXCITING! 🙂 This means two things.
- Garden chores are truly over for the year.
- I’ll get to walk to the bakery in the snow. 🙂
Goal #2 — Garden, Garden, Garden
With outdoor garden chores over for the year, this month I’ll get to work on my sun room which is really just an awkward space at the back of the house that has oodles of windows and tons of sunlight. Part of me wants to see if I can fit a small desk in that area {I think it would be lovely to look out to the backyard every morning while I write the blog} but we’ll see. It’s a small area, but I think once I paint the walls and make the shades… and fill the space with succulents and orchids and a few other indoor plants, it will be a really welcoming area.
Goal #3 — Plant an Orchard {Calling it Quits on this one.}
Lemon is on baby #3 and I must admit, I am surprised at how well she is doing. It will be interesting to see how many lemons we end up with at the end of winter. Who knows, maybe I’ll get a small indoor orange tree next.
Goal #4 — Gussy Up the Potting Shed Done!
I gussied up the potting shed at our old house, but I would like to add some sort of “potting station” to the backyard here somewhere, but I’m not sure where I would put it yet.
Goal #5 — Grow Enough Extra Vegetables, Eggs and Flowers to Earn $1500 at my little roadside vegetable stand.
It was totally my intention to grow a ton of fruits and vegetables to sell at the farm-stand when I made my list of goals for 2019 last winter, but then we moved. So, that whole goal was sort of a bust. I do miss it though.
Goal #6 — Finish Every Single Unfinished Rug Hooking Project in My Pattern Bin + 10 Things from back Issues of Magazines/Books I’ve Been Meaning to Make.Â
While I didn’t list any new finished pieces in my Etsy shop this past week, I get another rug hooked and started on another new design. I also made the decision not to add any new finished work {other than hand dyed wool and possibly a new kit} to my shop until the beginning of the year. I don’t know how much I’ll get done between now and December 31st, but I’m optimistic.
- 73 rugs in my pattern bin {now down to 20}
- 183 hooked flowers {finished 150, now down to 33}
- 10 “things” from back issues of magazines {finished 0}
Goal #7 — Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns {with at least half of them being large ones} DONE!

Goal #8 — Split and Stack 2 Cords of Wood for Next WinterÂ
All that firewood! We sold it. 😉 We do have a fireplace in our new home but we haven’t tried it out yet. I was going through old photos last night when I came across this one of when I started to paint the family room here at the new place. Oh what a difference a fresh coat of paint makes! Can you see the before color? I knew I wasn’t imagining things when I thought it had a yellow tinge to it.
Goal #9 — Do Something with the 5,002 Photos on My Phone

I have that leg lamp too!!! It’s my favorite decoration that I own and it’s the first thing to go up every year.
Mel says
I’m pretty sure my sewing goals were somehow cursed this year. It was hard to get started because a bunch of fabric got ruined in the wash early this year (despite a number of precautions). Then I couldn’t find replacements because that fabric was discontinued, so I had to find complimentary fabrics. Then my pattern didn’t work, so I needed more fabric, and the only matching one I could find locally was ombre, so I had to cut it very carefully to only use the solid part. And then this week, our fairly new iron broke, so it had to be replaced before I could continue.
BUT I finally finished sewing my Christmas tree skirt, and I’m 1/3 of the way done quilting it, so I should actually finish. It’s so heavy and wide that quilting is very slow going, but I think I can manage. I have to make candy for work today, but maybe between today and a few evenings this week it will finally be done—IF nothing else goes wrong.
Julie K says
Hi Mel, I really hope you post a picture of this amazing Christmas tree skirt. I’d love to see it! Wishing you good luck on finishing up!
Mel says
Oh, that’s so kind, but I don’t know how amazing it will really be. I’m just trying to get it done! It did turn out to be a good first quilting project in that a lot of the imperfections will be hidden by the tree and gifts though. 😉

We finished repairing the water damaged trim board on the kitchen window and painting the wall and trim. The new curtain valance arrived yesterday afternoon so I hope to get them irons, the new curtain rod installed and the curtains hung today. They’re so pretty; a french-grey gingham, pleated, with a ribbon detail.

Hi Mavis, love the blog and your book list! I have a book I think you will really enjoy- historical fiction about things I had never heard of. The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson. I think it’s right up there with Marilla. 😉
Donna says
I read that book and it is fabulous!!
Randi says
I would love it if you add to your goals for 2020 a post on how to dye wool for rug hooking.
Margery says
I need to look at my goals and see how I am doing, just been battling a case of the blahs lately. Should have made napping a goal.
Nancy D says
Haha….I was just flashing back to your Washington State HOA days and wondering if the Leg Lamp would have been allowed 😉
Mavis Butterfield says
Pretty sure we would have received a letter in the mail. 🙂 Ha!
Mel says
I suppose it’d be out of line to send the old HOA a Christmas card with a picture of the leg lamp in your new window….
Donna says
Hi Mavis , I found your blog and began following you about two years ago I have told my entire family about you and we speak of you as if your an old family friend . The garden tools are beautiful . A few years ago I had a very risky spinal surgery that did not go well it robbed me of my greatest past times outside in the flowers and garden as I woke to find I was paralyzed from the waist down I literally had to relearn myself how to sit , Stand , walk after many sessions of physical therapy and a 48 day stay in the hospital I got to go home but am still this day very limited with mobility . So I’ve made it my 2020 goal that I will get out side more and remake a big flower bed of Lupine , foxglove and other beautiful flowers that I love so much . I had built a beautiful English Knot garden before surgery it is filled in so nice and I recently found an antique English water cart . So I would be so honored to own the tools from Montana . I love your blog and was so in love with the home you bought in Mass , that would be a dream for me but I understand it kept you all so busy . I love rug hooking also .
Hope your family and you have a beautiful Christmas .
SandyF says
Oh to keep those pesky squirrels out of my garden! I can use these lovely tools to dog the pecan pods out that the squirrels buried…
Jess says
Looking forward to the unveiling of the leg lamp!

Mushing! Follow Blair Braver an on twitter and join the #uglydogs x nobody thinks the dogs are ugly it’s what we call ourselves after a comment from a non understanding type. Blair completed the Iditarod this year for the first time. She’s written a book (or two? Not sure) and even Harry Smith interviewed her and followed her travels. Many of us #uglydogs even donated to the underfunded schools along the Iditarod trail, raising thousands, while tracking her progress online, cheering her on and worrying when there weren’t updates. Imagine a huge international cheering party when she crossed the finish line (live feed video at finish line). People even called in pizza delivery orders for staff. Anyway, she could probably link you with a trail ride in Maine.
Maxine says
Blair Braverman, sorry. Seems it dropped a letter in last message
Dana says
I would display those tools on my counter for the winter and then get to business with them this spring in my garden. They are beautiful!
Jeanne says
I would love the tool kit! I would use them in my vegetable garden and my flower gardens. I love the weeding tools and I could plant a lot of vegetables with the trowel!
Donna says
Those tools are beautiful. I would use them in my vegetable and flower gardens.
Cdplaton says
I would so keep those hand tools for myself!
cindy says
The tools look impressive, I would keep the tools, I am so tired of hand tools bending and losing their edge.
Wendy Steele says
Good Morning, I am approaching the 2nd year in my new (old) house this spring and would love to get the gardens under control with the help of those beautiful garden tools!!!!
Mary says
If I were lucky enough to win those beautiful tools, I will use them in my flower beds as well as in my raised vegetable beds! They are beautiful!!!
