Well, after nearly 3 weeks at home for no reason other than I was busy working on orders… I finally left camp and went out into the real world for a date day with the HH! π
Part of me wanted to just stay home {and work and also see just how long I could go without leaving} but I could tell the HH was getting a little restless from just running errands and working on house things and so I finally caved in.
The first thing on our list was a nice walk along the Rockland breakwater.
My Big Day Out at Rockland Breakwater Started here.
After walking along the rocks to the lighthouse, we came back and walked along the beach where I hunted for treasures. And would you believe …. I even found a mini Fireball bottle. π SERIOUSLY! What is it with Fireball and the state of Maine? These little bottles are everywhere!
After our walk we stopped in at the Rockland Cafe for breakfast. The HH ordered an omelet and I had the eggs benedict {which was factastic}.
The walls were filled with local posters, lobster claw art and all sorts of odds and ends. This was our first time there and the food was so good that when we left, we were already talking about going back again.
One of my favorite parts about Maine is the lack of big chain restaurants and shops. Mom and Pop places make everything seem so much more homey, more welcoming, and more comfortable and I just love it.
The ladies loo. π
After breakfast we stopped by the library and loaded up on movies for the weekend.
And I was able to go home with a bunch of free back issues of gardening magazines and ones that cater to New England.
When we got home there was a pie waiting for us. This time it was a caramel peacan {which was outstanding!}. Thanks Mrs. HB. π
After a slice of pie and a bit of a rest, the HH went out to remove the taps in the maple trees and came back with over a half of a gallon of sap. I guess this means the sap is still flowing and we should leave the taps in a bit longer. Who knows, maybe we’ll end up with a decent harvest after all. π
Life is good. And it was fun to get out of the house for a bit… but now it’s back to work.
Here’s to calm and productive weekend,
~Mavis

If you like seafood, Rockland Cafe used to have a delicious seafood lasagna. Any good finds on the beach of the breakwater? At low tide I used to walk around the far bend of that beach (where not many go). I found a lot of golf balls. (go figure-a golf course up above) lol. Have a good Friday!

We have different views of things found on nature walks. π You see treasures and I see disrespectful people’s trash that spoil nature’s beauty and endanger land and aquatic wildlife, and I spend a chunk of the walk mentally directing foul language at that segment of human beings while I pick up their litter. π

Maybe you tapped a bit early? Leave those puppies in until you get enough sap!

Our first season tapping we tapped a teeny bit late and kept the taps in too long. The syrup tasted plasticy. It is from what is called “buddy” sap, as the trees are starting to bud.
We are still new tappers, so I don’t have sage advice to know the exact time to pull taps.

There are no new buds on the trees yet. Weee!

Oh, my goodness! I squealed when I saw your picture on the “beach” of flat rocks!!! I adore flat rocks! I have recently begun to collect perfectly circular rocks that I find on my runs/walks. I wanted to dig around your photo!

Mavis, just so you know, Maine doesnβt have a corner on the market as far as mini Fireball bottles go! Out here where I live in rural Northern California I see them where ever I walk. As much as that amazes me what really amazes and disgusts me more is finding filled plastic doggie poop bags neatly tucked on the side of a walking path/sidewalk. Iβd rather see a pile of dog poop than a plastic bag that wonβt degrade for years. Lazy pet owners are the worst IMO.

So much fun beach combing. I love all those flat rocks and collect
some from everywhere we travel. Label and date.
What Γ‘ grand place you chose for your forever home.
