Prep table by deVOL Kitchens
Here’s my big list of things I want to accomplish in 2022:
Remodel The Kitchen
While the HH is working on sanding the floors in the kitchen, I’ve been online searching for prep table ideas and floating shelves.
Sell Enough Rugs to Buy an AGA Stove {$11,442.90 of $22,000 earned so far}
The AGA has been ordered {we put 1/2 down when we placed the order} and it should be here later this summer. So in a nutshell… I better get hooking so I can come up with the rest of the funds to pay for the thing. 🙂
Fill the Canning Cupboard
Fresh asparagus is on sale this week! Yee-Haw. I think I might pickle some.
Jams I’ve made to fill my canning cupboard so far: Ginger Pear Jam and Spiced Christmas Jam.
Earn Enough Money Selling {?????} To Pay For Our 2022 Grocery Tab By The End Of The Year.
I totally forgot to list my driftwood on Etsy last week and now with the house a total mess, I think I’ll just have to wait until things calm down again because I don’t even know where it is now.
Eat More Fruits and Vegetables.
Ketchup totally counts, right?
Keep The Crafts… In The Craft Room.
Well, the crafts may be out of the dining room, but I barely have enough room to walk in there now because everything that was in the kitchen/dining area is now strewn between the family room and my crafting area.
But those floors…. Holy cannolis people, they’re looking good.
Tap Our 2 Maple Trees and Make Maple Syrup
The well has run dry. 🙁 Now we just have to wait for The Girl to come for a visit so we can boil down the sap.
Make a Quilt Top
I made absoultly zero progress on my quilt top this past week.
Be More Intentional With My Time
There is a person on Etsy selling pinecone wreaths for $200.
Note to self: Start picking up the pinecones in our backyard.
1 Craft / Blog Free Day So far I’m 9 for 13 this year.
I have to keep crafting in order to stay sane right now. If I didn’t, I think I would lose my mind.
Lucy and I have been spending most of our days in the craft room lately and although I’m getting a lot done, I’m glad the temps will be warmer next week so we can play outside instead.
Keep My Husband Busy
Slowly but surely, the HH is getting there. He ordered the sealer for the floor {it should arrive tomorrow} and thinks he’ll be ready to lay it down early next week.
Once that dries, we’ll move all our stuff over to the dining room/kitchen side of the house and then he’ll start the process all over again on the other side of the house. Fun times! 🙂
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2022
- Take over cooking {I’ll still do the baking and canning}
- Cut down the cluster of trees in the backyard
- Build a new set of stairs down to the water.
- Fill the field {with soil}
- Remodel 1 bathroom
Replace fireplace tile- Build window boxes for the front of the house
- Build an arbor for the wisteria
- Order 4 cords of firewood by the end of May and stack them in an artful way {like they did in the book Norwegian Wood}.
- Sand the floors in the entire house {new addition}
- Install new garage door openers {new addition}
- Build a wood shed {new addition}
My current project is trying to clean all the PINE FLOOR DUST out of my vacuum.
Apparently the HH thought it would be a good idea to use our household vacuum to suck up all the tiny bits of dust he couldn’t get with his old shop vac.
And then he ended up getting a new one after he ruined mine.
My House Projects For This Year {so far}
- Finish painting the outside of the house
- Finish painting the inside of the house
- Make something to hang above our new console table
- Make it look like people actually live here HA HA HA
- New window treatment for the kitchen window
Try 24 New Recipes {8 down, 16 to go}
I didn’t make any new recipes this past week. Gee. I wonder why.
So far this year I have shared the following recipes:
- Hash Brown Waffles with Bacon and Cheese
- Bacon Cheddar Jalapeno Biscuits
- Apple Cinnamon Granola
- Mrs. C’s Slow Cooker Pot Roast
- Ginger Pear Jam

Listen to 12 Audiobooks
I’m still on the wait list for Taste by Stanley Tucci and The Boys by Ron and Clint Howard.
Audiobooks I’ve listened to this year:
- Dolly Parton, Songteller by Dolly Parton 10/10
- Salt to the Sea by Ruth Sepetys 10/10.
- No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality by Michael J. Fox 10/10
- Night Road by Kristen Hannah on Audiobook. 9/10.
- Mill Town by Kerri Arsenault. Interesting. 8/10.
- The Kitchen Front by Jennifer Ryan 10/10.
Get a Fishing License and Catch a Fish
The HH is in charge of procuring all the fishing gear. So you know, there’s lot’s of research to be done first. 😉
I missed the pussy willow harvest for the second year in a row. I went out yesterday to clip some branches and they were about a day or two past their prime. 🙁
Also, there is still no sign of the 100+ daffodils I planted in front of the barn. I find it hard to believe that they were all gobbled up by critters and am now beginning to think that maybe I planted them too deep.

Have All My 2022 Ornaments Finished by April 1st. Done!
I finished my last batch of garden markers and ornaments around mid week and once they sell out, I won’t be making anymore again until next winter. Yee-Haw!
52 Walks {We’ve gone on 5 of 52 so far}
When I wrote down this goal, the idea was that we’d be going on one special walk a week. But it was so cold this winter, and now with refinishing the floors being the top priority, getting out and going for a nice walk has sort of been put on the back burner for right now.
Which is sort of a bummer because Lucy loves to go exploring.
Visit 12 Towns in Maine That I Haven’t Been to Before
So far we have visited the town of Hope, Maine and checked out the General Store there.
How about YOU? How did you do with working towards your goals for 2022?
~Mavis
Jennifer says
I wonder if the daffodil bulbs rotted. Though it is surprising that they would ALL not survive. It might too early still. I know in my neighborhood daffodils bloom at all different times depending on location and sun. If yours don’t get a ton of sun they will be later.
Mavis Butterfield says
Let’s hope they’re “summer” daffodils. 🙂
Mel says
I have had whole batches of bulbs fail. We don’t plant that many, so I don’t know if it’s user error or a bad batch when it happens, but we tend not to have critter issues, so it’s one or the other.
I’m still working on nursery stuff. I got the crib assembled yesterday, my husband set up the glider/armchair, and I ordered storage end tables to replace the storage unit that ended up breaking during assembly last week. I’m still waiting on IKEA to cough up a dresser though. I understand there are supply chain issues, but I don’t understand why they keep telling us specific dates things will be back in stock only to not actually restock them that day. In any case, I can’t buy too much more decor (like curtains) until I know what furniture (if any) will reside under the window and if we’ll have to move/replace other furniture to allow for a different dresser.
Also, I had an ultrasound last week, and the doctor reviewed it the following day and sent me a message saying my “babies” were looking great. She meant “baby”—singular, one, definitely *not* two!—but I actually spit out the water I was drinking in the couple of seconds there where I thought I would have to cram two cribs into that narrow room.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes, big difference baby vs babies! Oh my. 🙂
Andrea says
Looking at the state of your vacuum… well, that is totally grounds for divorce (LOL)! After 20+ years of marriage he should just know better, right? Ha! Ha!
Pam F. says
With all the projects your HH does, does he own a compressor? My husband bought one years ago (I have no idea why) but I now use it to blow out any and all dust out of all the parts of the vacuum. Works great.
Jennifer says
Yes! Compressors are the best!!!
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes, he has one. 🙂 Great idea!
Deborah says
Compressors are great for cleaning dust out of the coils on the fridge. I use our portable one often.
You floors are looking awesome!
Margo says
When you are done, don’t forget to clean under the fridge and if you have exposed coils, they’ll need to be cleaned. Years ago after finishing a new kitchen add on (we turned our attached garage into a large country kitchen), my husband was going to clean the coils of our refrigerator. We had concrete dust everywhere from the construction and slab repair. I was just finishing cleaning and polishing my new solid red oak cabinet faces when instead of using the vacuum to gently suck out the dust, he used it like a blower. EVERYTHING! and I mean everything including me was covered with concrete dust. Like something out of a Laurel and Hardy movie…. Still married though
Jen F says
Dear Mavis,
I recently purchased bags via Amazon for our Shop Vac. They are intended for drywall dust, but I’m wondering if they might work well for your floor project as well.
Jennifer says
We did a total cleanup of our vacuum – just look up your brand and model on youtube. Super helpful! And as Pam F. mentioned, if you have a compressor it can be SUPER for some of those larger pieces to blow them clean.
Tracey says
Unasked for opinion, but judging from the height of the daffodils you posted the other day I’m going to suggest you go out with a spade and heave up some of the ground where you planted those bulbs to see how they’re doing. It just may be that it’s too early for those varieties ( mine aren’t up yet either and I live south of you) but you could lift them up if you discover they’re down there trying to reach up and out. Couldn’t hurt!
Marlene Wurtzbacher says
Is that a Barnett hoop that your are hooking on? I have one and love the sturdiness of it!
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes. I have 2 now. I started using them in late fall and I love them.
Sue S. says
Wow, floors look great as-is and a huge congrats on the AGA front. It’s an amazing achievement!! Love, love the flag pillow design.
Christy says
Someone might have pinecone wreaths listed on easy for $200, but have they sold any?!?!
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes, they’re selling. 🙂
Mel says
There are also a few pinecone baby mobiles on Etsy selling assembled for $69 or as kits for $29.
Deborah says
Since I live in the Piney Woods of East Texas, I think it’s funny for people to buy pinecones. We have massive amounts of them. BTW, I’m allergic to them. And oak trees. Funny how that happens.
Lori says
A couple years ago I planted 100 daffodil bulbs and 100 red tulip bulbs. I ended up with 10 daffodils and 18 tulips. So I save every soup can and veg can I could the next fall I planted all my bulbs in the ground but in a buried can so the critters would have a hard time getting to them. Of course both the bottom and top of the can were removed. The following spring the all came up and were beautiful.
Pam says
This is a great idea — thanks! I bought a bunch of those downspout baskets to plant my tulips in and they all came up … but kinda expensive. For future plantings, think I’ll put a small piece of wire mesh down in the hole (we have voles that eat everything!), place a can ‘tube’ on top of the mesh and plant the bulb in the can. Brilliant!
Gigi says
Have your HH research dust collectors. There are some cool DIY projects and a few kits out there. We need it for drywall dust. This weekend we spent cleaning two uprights. Tearing them all down to get the dust out. There are also pre filters for the shop vac that go over the pleated version.
Jules says
I got the hard copy book of Stanley Tucci’s. Thanks for the idea….it will probably make you hungry as you listen to it.
I also checked out Dolly Parton’s book and I’m on the list for the Howard boys’ book.
Mavis Butterfield says
Pinecones, fishing line and the inside of an embroidery hoop. I love that someone can turn $1 into $69.
Karin says
I don’t know if this TV
series is available in the US anywhere, but it is worth looking for: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/p0bncl3n/stanley-tucci-searching-for-italy
Dawn says
I live on the MA/NH border and I just saw daffodils for the first time yesterday. keep the faith!
