Here’s my big list of things I want to accomplish in 2022:
Remodel The Kitchen
The electrician did not make it out last week 🙁 but we’re hoping he is able to come out and see all that needs to be done soon. We did decide on a kitchen faucet though, so that’s good.
Sell Enough Rugs to Buy an AGA Stove DONE!!!
Well I did it!!! I finally hit my goal of selling enough of my 2022 hooked rugs and pillows in my Etsy shop to pay for my new Duck Egg Blue AGA cooker. HOW COOL IS THAT!? I’m so excited. 🙂
Now I think I need to start saving up for a “research trip” to England to find the perfect scone {so I can duplicate it in my new oven}. I think that’s a pretty smart “new goal”, don’t you?
Fill the Canning Cupboard
I didn’t can anything new this week to add to the cupboard but I think a batch of zucchini relish is up next and if I can get my hands on some Maine peaches…. maybe a batch of peach jam as well.
So far this year I have canned:
- Raspberry Blueberry Jam
- Carrot Cake Jam
- Strawberry Lemon Jam
- Blueberry Lime Jam
- Strawberry Jam
- Cinnamon Rhubarb Jam
- Pickled Asparagus
- Ginger Pear Jam
- Spiced Christmas Jam
- Cranberry Sauce
- Split Pea and Ham Soup
- Beef Stew
Not canned, but in jars:
Earn Enough Money Selling {?????} To Pay For Our 2022 Grocery Tab By The End Of The Year.
I’ve decided to wait until fall to list my beach finds.
Eat More Fruits and Vegetables.
More radishes, peas, zucchini and peppers were on the menu this week. I just love this time of year and all the delicious fresh vegetables it brings.
Keep The Crafts… In The Craft Room.
This past week was a bit of a struggle to keep the crafts out of the craft room. I needed the table for cutting and folding wool and also for pinning rugs. Hopefully by this afternoon I’ll have the table cleared again.
Tap Our 2 Maple Trees and Make Maple Syrup {DONE}
It was a good experience, and we’re going to do it again next year {although I would like to find a few more trees to tap so our yield is a bit higher}.
Make a Quilt Top
A big thanks to everyone who chimed in to tell me I would need 2,025 squares to make a 90″ x 90″ quilt. The good news is, I have plenty of “blue” squares {probably at least 2025!} to make 2 quilts. Whoops!
Now I just need to cut out the white squares and I’ll be set. I am leaning towards getting everything cut out and then shipping the squares and the backing fabric off to my friend Zoë who is a professional quilter. Yes, it would be totally cheating, but it would also be such a relief to have someone else {who actually likes quilting!} to make the quilt for me.
Be More Intentional With My Time
Sweet Lucy. She loves a good snuggle.
1 Craft / Blog Free Day {I’ve had 27 craft/blog free days this year so far.}
Yesterday I headed out the door to meet up with The Duck Lady and saw a sign for a barn sale and just had to stop. Check out this huge wicker basket/trunk I got for $5!
A total deal if you ask me. I have no idea what I’m going to use it for, but for $5 I just couldn’t leave it there.
Keep My Husband Busy
After 2 weeks of dry {and hot!} weather, it finally rained. A few days later the HH was able to mow for the first time in 10 days. Let’s just say, I’m so glad mowing isn’t my job. I think I’d lose my mind.
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2022
- Take over cooking {I’ll still do the baking and canning}
Cut down the cluster of trees in the backyardDONE- Build a new set of stairs down to the water.
Fill the field {with soil}- Remodel 1 bathroom
Replace fireplace tile- Build window boxes for the front of the house
Build an arbor for the wisteria{We decided to move the wisteria to another location instead}Order 4 cords of firewood by the end of May and stack themDONESand the floors in the entire houseDONE- Install new garage door openers {new addition}
My House Projects For This Year {so far}
I’ve been very busy lately with my rugs lately so I haven’t had much time to get any house projects done. But, I think I like the idea of a cordless white linen shade for the kitchen window.
I need to decide soon though because we need to take down the crappy blind that’s up there now so we can paint the trim.
Things I need to get done this year:
- Finish painting the outside of the house
- Finish painting the inside of the house
- Make something to hang above our new console table
- Make it look like people actually live here HA HA HA
- New window treatment for the kitchen window
Try 24 New Recipes {15 down, 9 to go}

Get a Fishing License and Catch a Fish
We have fishing poles!!! Now we just need to get out on the water and use them. I know there’s fish out there to be caught because we see people out there all the time.
My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish
The deer got to my beans. AGAIN. And ate off all the tops on my sunflowers {well, I think they left me 2 or 3}. Life down in the lasagna and religious family plots is tough. Maybe if they eat enough of the plants the HH will realize we in fact DO NEED FENCE down there. 🙂

Visit 12 Towns in Maine That I Haven’t Been to Before
Last week we visited the town of Alna, Maine and found a beautiful lavender farm. Word on the street is that the general store in town is getting a makeover and so we’re hoping it will be up and running when we head back out to the farm in the fall so we can stop by and check it out.
So far we’ve visited:
How about YOU? How did you do with working towards your goals for 2022?

I found a recipe for making bread in a crockpot. I haven’t tried it yet (but I do plan on it). Here’s the link if you want to give it a go.

Congrats on earning all you beautiful stove money! Your work ethic and production level is mind boggling.
What a score on that basket. Can’t wait to see how you use it.
Oh goodness, the slowness of remodeling would have put me over the edge by now.
Good for you to jettison the quilt project. You have plenty of other fun, productive things to do. Seems like a healthy thing to hand this off.
We have only had .3” of rain since early May. Sigh. Texas is ROASTING.
Patty says
I love your new goal! Ahhh…..the perfect scone! Have you read the book written and illustrated by Susan Branch called “A Fine Romance: Falling in Love with the English Countryside”? It might give you some ideas for your search
Mel says
It has been a crazy month here for us. The last step to complete our nursery was to replace the floors on that level of the house, the stairs, and the basement because the old carpeting there was too old and cheap to be cleaned properly, and it was loose, so it was a trip hazard. Our first flooring company didn’t work out, so we had to find a new one and have them rush the project. Once they started, they found all kinds of subfloor issues (including cracked subfloor in the nursery), so they had to repair all that. They still knocked everything out in record time, and then I had to set up the nursery again with everything we packed up during the renovation.
But, the nursery is finally done, so I can cross that goal off my list! And the baby boy I had last week seems to really enjoy it . I’ll try to share nursery photos when things calm down a little.
Mavis Butterfield says
Congratulations Mel and hubby! I’ve been waiting to hear from you, so glad you let us know everything is well and I’m so glad the nursery is finally finished. Well done Mom! 🙂

Congratulations Mel and hubby – a darling, sweet boy! I too had been thinking about you and the impending baby! Sounds like he was born on or near my daughter’s birthday of July 17th. So happy for you and how lucky you got the floors in just before deadline! Enjoy your sweet babe! Don’t forget daddy will need some attention, too!
KATHY HORT says
Congrats to you all, Mel!
Mel says
Thanks for all the well wishes, everyone! We’ve had nonstop chaos since we got home from the hospital (power outages, internet outages, broken oven, and leaking dishwasher), so I’m just now able to reply.
J in OH-IO says
Congrats on reaching your goal for the AGA stove! Way to go!!! WhooHoo!!! We all have been cheering you on and rooting for you! This is such a wonderful blog…I look forward to see what you post each morning! Thank you!
Jamie says
You did have to buy that basket for $5….. a total steal!!
Lynn Y says
Love that faucet.
Wendy Steele says
I love it too!! It almost looks like it’s standing on little legs!!!
Tammy says
Congratulations on making the money for the stove! I thought that farmer and his wife rug were so cute! Looks like someone already bought it too!
Lindsey says
LOVE the plump wife rug. I think you will really enjoy the Aga, especially during the winter. And if you decide to raise sheep, you can put sick lambs in the heated compartment. (Learned that when we lived on a sheep farm in Scotland). Back in the U.S. we raised Babydoll Southdowns, which are miniature sheep. Are you sure you don’t want some of those?
Janice says
I love how in every new home you seem to bond so well with your neighbors. I have been in my home 15 years and absolutely love my neighbors. I can phone them any time I need help and we all let each other know if we are going away but we don’t socialize the way you do. I’ve been following you for a long time and each time you move you seem to make friends with neighbors very quickly. That’s so awesome!
Debi says
Trying to get all of my outside projects going and keeping up. I keep wanting to add more,
i need to stick with my initiaI goals before adding more.
Otherwise I am on target with my other goals.
Jamie H. says
I curious Mavis, have you ever cooked or baked on an Aga stove before?
Congrats on meeting your goal!
Diane says
I am always blown away by the great pictures you take of Lucy! Today’s was so stinking cute. I realize she is the Puggle Princess and has the most expressive eyes. Still you take great pictures of her.
So looking forward to reading about your fishing adventures. Don’t let “the big one” get away or pull the fishing pole out of your hands.
Jen says
I’m 100% in favor of you sending the quilt squares to Zoe. It’s not cheating to have Zoe sew your quilt. It’s just saving you the time and energy of feeling guilty about not doing something you don’t enjoy. Life is too short to have a goal you hate!
Christie says
Congratulations on meeting your goal! Very exciting! I cannot handle how cute Lucy is! 🙂
Julia Park Tracey says
I am so impressed by your drive to accomplish the goals you set. You are an inspiration. I have always wondered about Agas, as I am a British lit fan. Rosamund Pilcher is always going on about the Aga. I wonder what it will be like to cook on it? You will need to tell us in detail!
Dianne says
Congratulations on your NEW AGA stove! You put a lot of hard work into acquiring your stove! I hope you get many healthy years with it. The trunk was a steal. I, too can’t wait to see how you use it! Love the farmer’s rug! AND above all else- that is the cutest picture of Lucy, covering her sweet face with her paws! Dogs – best animals every!
