Stay Healthy!
Miss Puggle Love and I checked the shore just about everyday this past week and the most exciting thing we found were a couple of bait bags. Hopefully once more boaters get on the water we’ll get some more buoys.
I think I’ve figured out a way to upcycle the bait bags though, but I’ll wait until Mrs. HB gets here in May to test out my project.

Keep My Husband Busy
His current to-do list!
He picked up all the stones for the firepit yesterday so any day now we should have a firepit Yee-Haw! Then, it’s on to building some picnic benches.
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2021
- Build a new set of stairs down to the water. The old set… it’s not exactly useable.
- Build a firepit near the edge of the property. {He’s handy, he’ll figure it out}
- Build a picnic table near the birch trees for summer lunches {NEXT on the list!}
- Build 4
or 6garden boxes for his little lady - Build a boatload of birdhouses for the {soon to be} bird sanctuary
Remodel the bathroom in the hallway{DONE!}- Install some sort of driveway border
- Install a workspace for me in the basement for dying wool
Install a fence in the front for Lucy{DONE!}Build a set of 3 bookshelves in the dining room for me{DONE!}Install a trailer hitch on the car{DONE!}
We are loving our new dining room set and Lucy is loving the rug. We bought the same one we have in the living room {and that we had at our last place}. The rug is made from jute and old denim and super sturdy and I just LOVE the assortment of blues in it.
Things We’d Like to Buy
- A dinghy {ordered}
- Archery Set {every camp should have archery!}
Kitchen table and chairsSideboardBench for the entryway- A full size washer and dryer set {the house came with a small stackable w/d set}
- Deck chairs and a patio table set {I think we might go the picnic table route instead}
A set of 4 Adirondack chairs for the fire pit area{I LOVE these chairs!}- BBQ {Sayonara smoker?}
Unplug As Much As Possible {but still keep the blog, FB and Instagram}
My phone is still on silent mode. 🙂 Not having to be interrupted by the noise of a ringing phone or text messages is really pretty awesome.
Unplugging is pretty easy here, especially when the scenery is constantly changing. Last night there was a commercial clam boat out in the cove {the third time we’ve seen on out there this spring!}. I told Mrs. HB she needs to bring her muck boots when she comes so we can go clamming.
I mean, if there’s a clam boat out there… there must be clams out front, right?

My House Projects For This Year
My current {and all consuming} house project is getting someone to come out and put our floating dock back in the water {and attach it to the ramp}. I told the HH we are one YouTube video away from doing it ourselves. I mean seriously… how hard can it be? Wait for high tide, slip dock into the water, hook it up to the chains, lower the ramp onto the dock, click it into place.
- Figure out new window treatments for the back of the house
- Come up with a game plan for the kitchen remodel {for 2022}
Paint the family room walls and trim{DONE!}Paint the entryway trim and doors{DONE!}Paint the dining room walls and trim{DONE!}- Paint the master bedroom walls and trim
- Paint the barn and add a new fixture {okay, so the HH will be adding the fixture}
Paint the hallway bathroom{DONE!}
My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish :
Two days ago we had a little snow.
Yesterday the HH mowed our field. The weather is nuts here in Maine, that’s for sure.
Originally I was planning on planting a ton of wildflower seeds in the field and turning it into a little bird sanctuary with oodles of birdhouses and feeders. But then by chance yesterday, the FedEx guy stopped by to drop off a package and was talking about all the black flies on his route and how it’s a good thing we mowed that field because it really cuts down on the flies.
And then I was like… YOU MEAN a field will attract black flies!!!???
And then I had flash backs to where we lived 2 houses ago and was like… Oh man, I don’t think I could handle that again. So maybe my birdfeeder/wildflower area will have to be moved to somewhere else.
Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
- Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border
- Clean up and prune the area that faces the road
- Install a vegetable garden {Working on it!}
- Install a sunflower patch
- Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall {Why 2,500? It seemed like a good number to start with}

Hi Mavis! I know a couple of us recommended We Took to the Woods and I thought you had it on your reading list at one point. I loved the book and was wondering if you didn’t care for it?
Sandy says
I love that book! It’s so opposite of how I live — it fascinates me!
Annette says
A fire pit!! Time to stock up on Hershey bars, Graham crackers and marshmallows!
Kari says
I’m curious where you are in your quest to find window treatments. I took all the broken woven wood shades out of my dining room. We LOVE the look of no blinds, but really do need the light control, especially with summer coming. I’ve been waiting to see what you come up with, as I’m speculating you will go with something minimalistic that preserves your view.
Aunt Diane from Streator says
I’ve been waiting, too! We have a sunroom & our very old shades had to go. Last summer, we just allowed the ivy to grow over the windows. It looked like a tree house from the inside, but our insurance agent had a fit! Help, Mavis! You have good taste & I’m just going to copy what you do!
Mavis Butterfield says
I still haven’t decided. I was thinking either lined linen curtains with bronze rods, those rattan shades {probably the darker ones, or fabric shades. I think I am going to wait and see how hot the family / dining room areas are the summer get with all that natural light flooding in and to see if it’s something we’ll need to block out during part of the day.
Kari says
I had rattan/woven wood before but the mechanisms broke. The fabric shades are a bit over my budget. I am leaning toward drapes for the big windows and some sort of blind for the three small square ones over the buffet. Ugh. Decisions, decisions…
Pj Truman says
I can’t wait for the huge whale rug to be done and to see the front revealed! Hope you find the time to finish it soon. ❤️
Tamara says
Will birds eat the black flies, hopefully? I have no experience with them.
Lisa says
Is Mel ok???
Mavis Butterfield says
I’ve been thinking the same thing. She hasn’t left a comment in a while.
Mel says
Yes, I’m okay! We’re just going through some sad family things at the moment, so I haven’t been around as much. Thanks for thinking of me, Lisa (and Mavis)!
Mavis Butterfield says
We love you Mel!
Dianne says
Just a thought, Mavis. We all have been spending a lot of time in pajama bottoms and tops. I might wait another year, to see if you get out more, before tossing any clothes out. I have worn about the same 2 or 3 shirts all winter. And that is only when I went to the dentist, haircut, grocery store, etc. I think I may get some use out of the rest of my closet the remainder of the year as more events open up! I generally go through my clothes every season, won’t be doing that this year. Again, just a thought!
Mary says
Before digging clams you might want to check your local regulations. Not sure what it is in Maine, but last time we were in New Brunswick there was a limit on how many you could dig, where you could dig and when you could dig!
Daria says
I was going to post this. It looks like you have mudflats, but you will need a permit from town hall in Maine. There are size limits, too – you aren’t supposed to keep the small ones.
Gigi says
Bats and birds will eat black flies and larva and so will dragonflies and damselflies. Perhaps some bat boxes and plants to attract dragonflies. Or perhaps find a local bee keeper and start some hives in the open area?
Meg C says
I just finished The Four Winds. It was pretty good – not what I was expecting at all. I’ve never really paid attention to that part of American history so in addition to it being a compelling story it was informational, too.
Katie says
I made those chocolate chip cookies yesterday and they were the BEST chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever made. It’s actually the first time I’ve made some that didn’t fall flat!
eliz says
Why is there two weigh in dates for April?
Diana says
I agree with a couple of the ladies above about keeping the birdboxes. Yes, keep the field mowed, or maybe plant a wildflower mix that’s an early spring blooming variety so you can mow it when the flowers are done and before the black flies. Bat boxes will hopefully attract the bats – to control mosquitos – and birdboxes will attract a number of birds that will, hopefully, devour the black fly larvae, etc. Do some research on black fly organic eradication/control and see if you can find a bird solution (below is a link for an organic chemical solution). It’s too bad there aren’t already a few trees out there – they can give homes to many bird types and the early morning music is wonderful.
