Stay Healthy!
The Girl is here this weekend and so the plan is to eat a lot of ice cream and go on some long walks, you know, to balance everything out. Ha! I ordered a bunch of aquaboards for her so she could paint more watercolors for the dining room area.
She’s been focusing on the things {birds mostly} that we’ve spotted in our very own backyard. At the rate she’s going, I think we’ll have a dedicated wall of her watercolors by the end of summer. 🙂

Get 24 Stories Off My Phone and onto the Blog {I now dislike this goal!}
Here’s a picture of the potholders Mrs. HB bought from the Amish lady when we visited her basket/jam/fresh baked good stand last week.
Stories I’ve Taken Off My Phone and onto The Blog:
- Ale House Inn – Portsmouth, New Hampshire
- Chicken Foot in the Pot Pie

Get the Photos on My Phone Down to Less Than 1,000 {started the year with 2863 photos}
Thanks to Mrs. HB, there are now like 10 million photos on my phone again. Note to self: whittle them down again and figure out the name of this double white daffodil so I can order a boatload more of them to plant in my garden this fall.
Last year I tried to place an order in September for bulbs and they were all sold out. So as soon as the peonies bloom in the front yard and I know what color to order, I think I am going to pre-order my bulbs for fall so I don’t miss out.
Clean Out My Closet
I still haven’t worn about 50% of the clothing in my closet this year and so it’s looking like I’ll be donating a bunch of stuff to the little church in town towards the end of the year. A thinned out closet… it can be very liberating.
My House Projects For This Year
Next week I’ll be painting the barn!! Yee-Haw! I’m so excited to finally get around to doing this. Not so much because it will look 100 times better painted white, but because that means once the barn is painted… the house is next. 🙂 We decided to go with Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior Paint Semi-Gloss. It wasn’t cheap, but it’s suppose to be really awesome durable exterior paint according to This Old House.
- Figure out new window treatments for the back of the house
- Come up with a game plan for the kitchen remodel {for 2022}
Paint the family room walls and trim{DONE!}Paint the entryway trim and doors{DONE!}Paint the dining room walls and trim{DONE!}- Paint the master bedroom walls and trim
- Paint the barn and add a new fixture {okay, so the HH will be adding the fixture}
Paint the hallway bathroom{DONE!}
My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish :
This week I’ll be planting sunflowers and wildflowers {mostly lupine, foxglove, purple coneflowers and Shasta daisies} near the road and down in a low spot out front. I had started a couple of flats of sunflowers last week and set them out on the back porch under domes to germinate, but the chipmunks got to them so now I’ll have to direct sow them and hope for the best.
Everybody’s got to eat I guess….
Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
- Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border
- Clean up and prune the area that faces the road
Install a vegetable garden{Done}- Install a sunflower patch {next up on the list!}
- Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall {Why 2,500? It seemed like a good number to start with}
Reach 10,000 Sales on Etsy {as of this morning I’ve made 7512 sales on Etsy}. Only 2429 to go!
I dyed a wee bit of wool last week. 😉 I listed a few of the colors yesterday, but need to get the rest of the wool bundled up and online.
Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns or Kits
My next Etsy shop update for finished pieces is June 4th. But I’ll need to set aside 2 solid days to finish up the rugs I hooked and turn a few of them into pillows if I’m going to meet my deadline. I don’t know if I’m getting slower, or just have more on my plate this summer than last year, but it seems like it is taking me forever to complete hooked pieces these days.
New Rug Hooking Kits I’ve Created This Year:
Create 12 New Ornaments for 2021

You are one very talented family! How wonderful that your daughter will create art for your walls. I am extremely glad I get to see all the beauty you are creating at Camp Butterfield, Maine.
I love a crisp, white barn. It will be a beauty!

The Girl should start an Etsy shop!!! You could kick it off with a giveaway! 😉
Where will you order your bulbs from? I’m sure I could look back at old posts, but today I’m too lazy! ☺️

Van Engelen.

Mavis,
Good morning! Love your updates and they inspire me to get stuff done. One goal I set for myself last summer when my job ended due to COVID was to go back to school (online through my previous university) and finish a degree- 2 semesters now completed and ✅ done! Also set a goal to get a new job- ✅ done but waiting for my start date!
I saw the Lost Kitchen for the first time this past week and fell head over heels in love with Erin French’s story and wondered if you knew of her- of course you do! I told my husband now it is a goal for us to get to visit her restaurant so hopefully next summer we can get picked- our 25th wedding anniversary is next year so that would be a cool way to celebrate!
Last thing I want to say is I imagine you already know this but be careful planting foxglove because it can be harmful to dogs but you probably already know that and Lucy must leave your plants alone. Thank you for your blog- I have loved reading you for many years!
Jeanine says
Wow…that is a boatload of wool…no wonder you haven’t had time to finish the hooking projects. There’s only 24 hrs in a day. The pot holders are cute.
When you make your bird sanctuary, the birds may eat your flower seeds if the chipmunks don’t get to them first. That’s the way it goes when living in the county with the wildlife.
We have at least 3 mother turkeys and their young babies visiting us everyday. It’s so fun to watch them. We feed the birds and the turkeys come around to check out the seeds that have fallen on the ground. Also, the turkeys eat the bugs and oak worms. It has been said that turkeys eat ticks…and we haven’t had any this year so far! With the weed whacking, my husband always manages to get one or two on him. So, we have tick patrol before he takes his shower.
We have been cleaning up the garden this last week…it’s been slow going, but we are making progress. I’ll be planting some seeds and plants today and next week.
Have a good week!

Love the lobster!
I’ve set aside most of my goals since we have had other priorities lately, but I did plant tomatoes, so that meant I had to move forward with my plans to redo our trellising system. Most of our tomatoes are in raised beds, so systems like “Florida Weave” trellising don’t really work. I’ve had success connecting the trellises between beds, but it’s hard to make them high enough that I can walk underneath while still making them stable. Last year, I did a vertical system which worked pretty well, but the weight of the plants was a bit much, and it also made picking difficult since the plants were 10 feet tall.
My original plan for this year turned out to have some issues, so I developed a new plan that involves vertical trellising and connecting the beds with more horizontal trellising , and I think I like it better. I just ordered the materials, which will still need some slight modifications, but I think it will be sturdier than what I had in mind. It’s also pricier than my original plan, but it should last far longer. Here’s hoping it works.

I have a weekly goal this week. Go through all of the rooms in the house and do the deep spring cleaning and decluttering. My kids finished up the school year Friday and I and just thankful they got to go full time all year and are right where they need to be academically. They were sent home with all of their stuff Thursday from the school year and last years stuff. They all had a backpack full and a trash bag and two sets of gym shoes, etc. My job concluded on Friday as well, so finally I can have the time I need to get stuff done. I haven’t a clue how working moms get it all done, but I never figured it out in my time working at the school. So now I feel like I need to catch up on all the little tasks that got ignored.
I am hoping to get the gutters off this week and fascia all replaced. I have an exterior house painter scheduled for mid-June. Then I will start building my deck. If the hubby happens to go overseas before it is completed I will have to hire a handyman, but I hope I can do it all with him on his days off. I have landscape fabric covering the front yard I leveled and will wait a bit before doing something with it. I want deer proof without a fence and I want to see once the house is painted what the vision will be….hopefully. We want our house turn key and ready sell if need be. I have a lot of work ahead of me and a big list.

Can’t wait until you post the Whale and Ship rug! The Girl is quite talented. Love the lobster!
We’re planning a Maine vacation this year. Any recommendation for an island to stay on for a few days of scenic relaxation?
Mavis Butterfield says
We haven’t been to any of the islands in the summer yet… But people seem to love Monheagan Island.
Allison says
Yes, the Girl IS talented, and in a very challenging medium. So looking forward to seeing her work on your walls. I just finished and loved The Midnight Library. Sort of a mind-blowing concept, and such a wonderful vehicle for exploring themes of regret vs gratitude, paths chosen vs. possibilities, the life-changing effect of even small kindnesses. Gave me a lot to think about.
Enjoy your painting, and don’t ever question that you are doing so, so much, and everything well!
sandyf says
Finding freedom is so good that I ordered two more copies to give away. It is much better after watching the Discovery Plus show about her restaurant, The Lost Kitchen. And her cookbook is wonderful.
I am sure listening to the book on audio is even better.
Your daughter is very talented-I see some additions to your Etsy store coming soon-greeting cards? Small prints? Family biz.

I love the lobster!! I second the idea that The Girl should start an Etsy shop! She’s very talented! Just like her mom and dad!

The lobster is great! I don’t remember seeing a picture of a barn??

Where would you suggest buying tulip bulbs in bulk? Last year I just bought a bag at Sams thinking the 40-45 bulbs in the bag was a lot. I was wrong lol
Mavis Butterfield says
We buy from Van Engelen. 🙂 I love their bulbs!
