Clean Out My Closet
I still haven’t worn about 50% of the clothing in my closet this year and so it’s looking like I’ll be donating a bunch of stuff to the little church in town towards the end of the year. A thinned out closet… it can be very liberating.
My House Projects For This Year
The barn has been painted! Yee-Haw. I’m so glad to be able to check this off the list. Next up is painting the HOUSE! But that will probably have to wait until towards the end of the month because I want to finish getting the area around the barn cleared up a bit. There’s a lot of brush to prune back, that’s for sure.
- Figure out new window treatments for the back of the house
- Come up with a game plan for the kitchen remodel {for 2022}

My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish :
Yesterday I planted 2 flats of zinnia seeds. I decided to start them in flats this time rather than direct sowing simply because I’m not exactly sure where I’m going to put them yet. 🙂
Next up is planting a boatload of containers or lupine and Shasta daisies {more on that later though}.
Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
- Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border
- Clean up and prune the area that faces the road
Install a vegetable garden{Done}Install a sunflower patch{decided for a row along the side of the barn instead}- Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall {Why 2,500? It seemed like a good number to start with}

So much accomplished and it’s all beautiful! The plant is Baptisia, otherwise known as wild indigo.
Pj Truman says
Love the whale pillow and was so excited to see the Cape Code Sailboat Whale rug finished. All of your time and efforts really paid off… it’s a showstopper!
Rebecca in MD says
Here’s a link to the plant profile for the Baptisia Australis you were admiring at Lowe’s.
http://www.perennials.com/plants/baptisia-australis.html
It blooms at the same time as peonies, and together in a vase it will make you swoon. Since you are planting lots of peonies, you need some Baptisia in your garden. The OG is blue flowering, but you can also get Baptisia in yellow, white, and purple.
Patti says
I grew Baptisia when we lived in MA and it grew well. Your rugs/pillows are beautiful! I love your plant markers too!
Yvonne says
I have baptisia in both purple and yellow plants for many years. Easy to care for, not much to do but some support cage. They do get large…
Richelle says
I grow Baptisia in the Pacific NW; it’s a super easy perennial. But beware, there is a reason it’s common name is wild indigo. The blossoms will stain whatever the touch!
Gigi says
I was just reading up on this and it says it can be used to make purple dye if true indigo is not available.
Vicki Fetui says
I’m not sure if I have said this before, or if I just thought it (several times)…The Girl Who Thought She Was a Bird is very talented! I absolutely love everything I have seen that she has done!.
It looks as though everything is starting to come together…I never had a doubt that it would!
Loves to Sweet Lucy!
Gigi says
I love the PictureThis app to identify plants live or from a photo. But then again, there wouldn’t be great dialogue either.
Nanci Fitschen says
Don’t buy it! It gets invasive and has tap roots that are huge and long. I’m trying to get rid of two of them in my flower garden. They have pretty flowers and pods but that’s about it. I wish nurseries would tell a person if a plant is invasive.
Mary says
I have that plant…. and my garden guru called it False Indigo. It is blooming right now and is lovely. And it must be easy to grow because I don’t remember even planting it and have done nothing to it.
Laura Arnett says
Mavis…. I laughed when I seen the Blackstone griddle because we recently bought one and I absolutely love it! I feel like I work at The Huddle House – I can cook pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs, hash browns-you name it we slap it on there and it’s fun because we act like we are in a cooking show while using it. The clean up is easy and it keeps greasy cooking out of my kitchen and off my stove which is a winner for me.
The finished Cale Cod rug is beautiful and The Girl should paint a couple of pictures and list them on Etsy. She’s had an eye for the way the paints should flow.
Have a great start to your week and can’t wait to see your next adventure 🙂
Nancy Sadewater says
The stork picture is beautiful.
Lori says
Your HH is going to love his black stone. I love mine!! I have had it for 3 years and finally got rid of our BBQ because we never use it anymore. We take ours camping. I can feed the whole camping crew a hearty breakfast of pancakes and bacon and eggs before the fun begins and be cleaned up ready to go on the adventure too. Rainy day lunch it’s grill cheese and tomato sandwiches, then when supper rolls around it can be weenies and beans(pot on the side of griddle) roasted corn and shrimp skewers. The ideas are endless. Clean up is so easy!! You will enjoy it.
Tonya says
Beautiful paining by your talented daughter. Good job on all your goals. It’s fun to see your progress
Cheryl says
Your daughter is very talented, like her mom.
Is that lemon meringue pie I spy with my little eye? My favorite.
Congratulations on your weight loss, you look so healthy.
Marcia says
So, what’s your secret for dropping weight while simultaneously eating at bakeries…I could use some tips!!
(It doesn’t help that my job ties me to a computer all day, this I realize…)
Mavis Butterfield says
Everything in moderation. 🙂 A slice of cheesecake… that’s a meal. And I drink LOT’S of water. I probably drink the equivalent of 5-6 water bottles plus 3 giant mugs of tea each day.
Cecile says
What ever happened to the Ship rug you were to hook for an organization two houses ago? A museum or local celebratory day? I don’t remember seeing it finished.
As for the False Indigo, if you’re going to get it only plant it in a flower planter that isn’t on actual soil. A planter on asphalt or decking so it doesn’t send it’s runners below ground or you will have it everywhere! Unless of course that’s what you want, a field of False Indigo! lol
Elisabeth says
Your blog is the most inspirational that I receive, and nothing is more inspirational than your weight loss journey. Big applause from me!
Barb Gilbert says
Mavis, Your blogs are such a highlight for my day! I love your rugs and ornaments! You are so gifted and talented! Your daughter’s paintings are delightful! Is she an actual artist or does she just love painting? She should sell some paintings in your Etsy shop! I sometimes share something from you to my daughter and daughter in law and I will say “it’s from my friend, Mavis!”
Laura Smith McKenna says
Mavis, I am very interested in learning to hook rugs, pillows, etc. One problem…I am very allergic to wool. Is it possible to hook with other fibers like cotton, silk, etc.?
