Keep My Husband Busy
Grill boy is obsessed with the new Cheez It Snap’d crisps. He circles back to the pantry several times a day for a handful and says he is never eating Doritos again. Have you tried them? I’m not a big fan of chips, but these are pretty good in small {3 chips at a time} doses.
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2021
- Build a new set of stairs down to the water. The old set… it’s not exactly useable.
Build a firepit near the edge of the property.{DONE!}Build a picnic table near the birch trees for summer lunches{Done!}Build 4 or 6 garden boxes for his little lady{we did raised beds this year instead}}- Build a boatload of birdhouses for the {soon to be} bird sanctuary
Create a garden path/walkway for the front garden{DONE!}Remodel the bathroom in the hallway{DONE!}- Install some sort of driveway border
- Install a workspace for me in the basement for dying wool
Install a fence in the front for Lucy{DONE!}Build a set of 3 bookshelves in the dining room for me{DONE!}Install a trailer hitch on the car{DONE!}
Things We’d Like to Buy
The hunt for a new washer and dryer set has been put on the back burner for now. Mostly because according to my husband it seems silly to replace something that’s still is good running condition.
I guess we’ll just wait until it dies and they’re all sold out in the stores and then the wait list will be like 6 months and we’ll have to to wash our clothes in saltwater. Yep. That sounds like a solid plan to me.
A dinghy- Archery Set {every camp should have archery!}
Kitchen table and chairsSideboardBench for the entryway- A full size washer and dryer set {the house came with a small stackable w/d set}
Deck chairs and a patio table set{Going the picnic table route instead}A set of 4 Adirondack chairs for the fire pit area{I LOVE these chairs!}BBQ{He bought a Blackstone Griddle instead!}2 More Kayaks
Unplug As Much As Possible {but still keep the blog, FB and Instagram}
Watching turtles cross the lawn… does it get any slower than that?
Unplugging is cool….
- Goodbye Facebook {Done!}
- Goodbye Amazon Prime {Done!} $119 a year
- Goodbye Hulu {Done!} $54.99 a month *

- Goodbye PicMonkey {Done!} $50 a year

Hmm… What should I unplug next?
* Hulu is actually now $64.99 a month for the live tv version {live sports, live news}. You can get it for $5.99 a month but all that does is play tv shows and old movies {with ads}.

Read {or Listen to} 12 New Books about Maine {or written by Maine Authors}
I listened to the Life of Pi on audiobook for about 1 1/2 discs before giving up. I just couldn’t get into it. Have you seen the movie? Maybe it’s better than the audiobook?
The last few nights I’ve been reading The Lobster Coast by Collin Woodard and I’m enjoying that. But I do like the audiobook format a little better because I can listen while I am working on my craft projects.

My House Projects For This Year
I am happy to report that I have totally finished the front of the house and the garage and now I’m on to the back. Which luckily won’t take as long because there are so many windows across the back.
Now I just need to figure out what color I am going to paint the foundation when I’m done with the siding. I had assumed I’d paint it grey, but now I’m wondering if red would be a bit more fun. The foundation at the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Bristol, Maine is red and if I painted our front door red to match, that might be kind of fun. But I don’t know yet.
- Figure out new window treatments for the back of the house
- Come up with a game plan for the kitchen remodel {for 2022}
Paint the family room walls and trim{DONE!}Paint the entryway trim and doors{DONE!}Paint the dining room walls and trim{DONE!}Paint the master bedroom walls and trim{DONE!}Paint the barnand add a new fixturePaint the hallway bathroom{DONE!}

I managed to finish the last 14 pencil cases, so I reached my goal of 100 to give away to students this Fall. I also got caught up on housework and got mostly back on track with meal planning. I’m planning to freezer cook as I go this fall since I wasn’t able to do it in advance. I cleaned out the freezers yesterday and froze some quesadilla filling, and I’m going to freeze some soup and red beans and rice later this week. I also need to make and freeze some bread today.
I have not yet managed to trap either of the stray cats living in our yard though. One cat was not around last week, and the other cat can tell the difference between a set trap and one that’s been zip-tied open (with clear zip ties!) to look set, so she would only eat in the trap when it was unset. We’re trying again this week, but we’re mostly waiting for a different kind of trap to arrive to see if that works better. It’s extremely hard to coordinate trapping with the vet hours and our work schedules, and the traps are stupid expensive (we’ve now spent about $700), so this could be a very long and expensive project. I can get over the expense, but I’m really hoping we don’t end up with kittens before I’m able to trap these two. Otherwise, I’ll be giving out kittens instead of pencil cases to students this Fall.
Mavis Butterfield says
Kittens and pencil cases!!! 🙂
Mel says
Desperate times call for desperate measures!
Cindi says
Is there a cat rescue in your area that might lend you a trap? Bless you for looking after these kitties!
Mel says
Not really. We’d need to borrow it for weeks at a time, and they don’t have the specific type we’d need. Since at least one cat is too smart for the regular trap (which is what the rescue has), and since she won’t enter the yard when we are in it, we have to go with a remote controlled drop trap. We don’t even have a vet clinic in our county where we can take them once they’re trapped (our regular vet can’t schedule them), so we will have to drive an hour to the closest clinic in the event that we can actually trap them.
Holley says
RED!!!! That would look amazing!!!!
Terri says
I like the red door and foundation idea. Think royal blue would be awesome, too.
Chris says
I made the mistake of buying the jumbo bag of Snap’d cheese crackers at Costco. My family is now hopelessly addicted to them! They are so good. We just tried the BBQ flavor – meh.
Lana says
We had that exact washer/dryer at our house at the lake. It got so loud that we couldn’t not bear it anymore and had to replace it even though it was still working. Hopefully you will get the racket warning too.
Ashley Bananas says
My goal this week is to finish landscaping the second house in preparation to sell. I bought several clearance hibiscus and nursed them back to health. Now time to finalize all my buys and enlist a neighbor to help me straighten the border and be quick with planting and mulching. I can’t do heat and sun well anymore, so sunset gardening it is! lol
Love your weekly posts
Nancy Sadewater says
I had that same stacked set and we finally took it out even though it was still working. Mine kept either getting close to or actually catch on fire from the lint filter. We emptied each time, clean the lint filter from the outside, etc. to avoid the issue. It would always be in the left hand on the front of the machine inside the slant between the washer and dryer. We finally got to the point that we left the cover off to keep a closer eye on it and then had it removed from the house.
Julie says
Just to make you feel better, Mavis…..our washer died in February, ordered a new one in March. They said it’d be here the first of April, then, June, then July…..now it’s supposed to come in October!!!!!! So maybe you should order one now, and then it would GET to you by the time your washer dies!!!
Cathy says
That pear ornament made me think to ask you if you will be making a 12 days of Christmas garland? I think that would be very cool!
Also, we ordered a dishwasher 2 months ago and are still waiting. You can always put the stackable away as a backup.
GrannyB says
I think a red front door would be amazing. The foundation color could go either way, gray or red, depending on how bold you are feeling when you buy the paint.
Have you ever thought about buying front loader machines and stacking them where your current ones are? Main floor laundry is so convenient and I wouldn’t want them in the basement where they could distract you from wool dying!!! Lol. Plus if you went ahead and ordered new ones, you would be able to sell your used ones when the new ones arrived. Better than just shipping them off for free.
To think you only gained 2 1/2 lbs from eating all those pies and cheeseburgers in July!! I think I gained more than that from just looking at the pictures of the pies on your blog!!!!

Lisa Rostocki says
Mavis on the scone recipe is it really 2 cups of heavy cream? I was wondering since other scone recipes I have used in the past don’t use that much liquid.
Mavis Butterfield says
The bacon scones? Yes, 2 cups. 🙂

I read Life of Pi and also saw the movie. I found the book much better. The movie skipped much of the important background of Pi’s religious understandings that helped inform the reader of later events. It’s a strange book, but I loved it. I’d recommend giving it a go when you have time for a very leisurely sit down. It’s not a good book to read while you’re distracted or thinking about other things.

Please tell me about the jars that use the rings and clips, pictured above. Where do I find these and what do you use them for, long term. Thank You.
Mavis Butterfield says
Weck canning jars. I use them for canning. They are a bit of an investment, but the quality is much better than the regular mason jars {the glass is thicker} and the rubber gaskets are generally less expensive {and much easier to buy} than traditional mason jars.
You can find them here: https://weckjars.com/
