Stay Healthy!
Just another beautiful day here in Maine. Sunshine, temps in the 70’s, coastal breezes and lots of green {and blue}. Have I told you how much I love it here? 🙂

Keep My Husband Busy
The HH got a new toy! A wood chipper. This should make cleaning up around here much easier. And there’s even a big chute for leaves, which will certainly come in handy this fall with all the big trees surrounding us.
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2021
- Build a new set of stairs down to the water. The old set… it’s not exactly useable.
Build a firepit near the edge of the property.{DONE!}Build a picnic table near the birch trees for summer lunches{Done!}Build 4 or 6 garden boxes for his little lady{we did raised beds this year instead}}- Build a boatload of birdhouses for the {soon to be} bird sanctuary
Create a garden path/walkway for the front garden{DONE!}Remodel the bathroom in the hallway{DONE!}- Install some sort of driveway border
- Install a workspace for me in the basement for dying wool
Install a fence in the front for Lucy{DONE!}Build a set of 3 bookshelves in the dining room for me{DONE!}Install a trailer hitch on the car{DONE!}
Things We’d Like to Buy
The hunt for a new washer and dryer set has been put on the back burner for now. Mostly because according to my husband it seems silly to replace something that’s still is good running condition.
So for now, I’m just keeping busy collecting lint to toss on the lasagna garden. 🙂
A dinghy- Archery Set {every camp should have archery!}
Kitchen table and chairsSideboardBench for the entryway- A full size washer and dryer set {the house came with a small stackable w/d set}
Deck chairs and a patio table set{Going the picnic table route instead}A set of 4 Adirondack chairs for the fire pit area{I LOVE these chairs!}BBQ{He bought a Blackstone Griddle instead!}2 More Kayaks
Unplug As Much As Possible {but still keep the blog, FB and Instagram}
This past week I collected a bunch of seaweed, took the puggle princess for a walk, worked in the garden, dyed wool and hooked a few rugs. Doing things, rather than wasting time on a screen is so much more rewarding.
Unplugging is cool….

*** We didn’t make a trip to Head Tide Oven this past week as there are only a few items on the menu left that we haven’t tried {1 bread, seasonal pies, candied orange peel and maybe a cookie or two}. Hopefully they’ll be a new pie on the menu this week though so I have an excuse to go. 🙂

Clean Out My Closet
Working on it.
My House Projects For This Year
I only painted a teeny tiny section of the back of the house this past week {it was too muggy} but hopefully the weather will be a bit cooler so I can get back at it.
Also, I’ve been thinking about my ugly white blinds and what to do with them. On one hand they are plain and unattractive, on the other hand they are functional and since I haven’t really come across anything that I am totally in love with yet, I feel like I might as well just keep them in place until the right thing does come along.
Which hopefully will be sooner than later, but why force it, right?
- Figure out new window treatments for the back of the house
- Come up with a game plan for the kitchen remodel {for 2022}

My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish
Current garden projects include building a lasagna garden and harvesting tomatoes. I think I’m done with planting the yellow and red pear tomatoes though because they just aren’t as flavorful as they used to be AND half the time they split before they are ready to pick {which is super annoying}.
The Sun Golds though… they are still my #1 all time favorite little cherry sized tomatoes to grow.
Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}- Star a lasagna garden
- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
- Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border {fall project}
- Clean up and prune the area that faces the road {working on it}
Install a vegetable garden{Done}Install a sunflower patch{decided for a row along the side of the barn instead}- Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall {Why 2,500? It seemed like a good number to start with}
Reach 10,000 Sales on Etsy {as of this morning I’ve made 8026 sales on Etsy}. Only 1974 to go!
On Friday I listed some new wool bundles on Etsy and have been keeping busy this past week with drawing out patterns and putting kits together.
Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns or Kits {5 down 7 to go}
I’ve also been spending my evenings hooking again and as as result, now have a giant stack of rugs to finish. I still have a few more to hook, but I’m hoping to have them all completed in another week or two and get them up on Etsy by the end of the month.
It’s weird. Sometimes the year seems like it’s whizzing by, and other times it feels like a crawl.

- Cape Cod 1829 New England Whale and Sailboat
- Nantucket Whale
- 1820 Flower Basket

I agree with you about cherry tomatoes – – – I haven’t found a variety that can hold a candle to Sun Gold. This year I planted Sungold and Black Cherry. The Black Cherry are not nearly as productive or tasty.
Tomato harvesting is in full swing here, and I am doing a lot more freezing than canning. Today I am going to make a huge batch of “chili starter.” This consists of cooked fresh tomatoes with onions and peppers and chili seasonings. I freeze this in quart-sized bags, and then when we have a hankering for chili I just add a pound of browned ground beef and some beans.
Annette says
Love the chili starter idea.
Jeanie says
What a great idea! Especially with some of my that have split and aren’t great slicers.

We are super interested in your wood chipper. After you have used it a while, perhaps you could write a post about the info on your model, why the HH chose it and how it is performing,
Your temps sound lovely. We can’t wait to visit Maine next month.

Hi Mavis, I’m a longtime fan of your blog, I lived in Maine for 35 years and moved to Las Vegas 6 years ago, biiiig difference!! Anyway, I’m here visiting family and we went up to Longfellows green house that you talked about on an earlier post. Ok THAT did not disappoint. What a fantastic place, we were nice and left a hefty chunk of cash there in appreciation. Now it’s Sunday morning and we’ve just enjoyed bagels from Scratch bakery in South Portland and planning a ferry ride to Peaks Island for the Art on the Porch art walk. Ah Maine in the summer!!
Linda says
What brand leaf shredder did the HH decide to purchase?
Will you make a Barred Rock garland?
suzanne says
What about white wood shutters for your windows. Theartofdoingstuff.com has a very simple tute to follow.

I made the Zucchini Tart last night as a side dish to grilled chicken…holy moly…BEST EVER! Will become a favorite main dish next time! I don’t have a tart pan, so I made it in my round quiche pan and it turn out perfectly. With the scraps of puff pastry (square sheet/round pan), I spread it with a little bit of egg wash, sprinkled with equal cinnamon/sugar mixture, based 12 minutes. My 86 year old mama, who lives with us and breathes breads and pastry, was in heaven!
Thanks for sharing that recipe!

Hey, Mavis, as a fellow Mainer, I also love reading books about Maine and her history. Have you read The Star Are Fire by Anita Shreve. It’s about Maine’s biggest fire and based on a fictional midCoast town. Also The One in a Million Boy by Monica Wood is set in Southern Maine. Actually, I’m pretty sure all of Monica’s books are set in Maine, but that one is my favorite. Both books are excellent.
My zucchini isn’t producing much this year. Either are my pumpkins. Lots of blossoms and bees buzzing around, so I’m not sure what I did wrong. I was going to blame the rain, but yours are doing fine darnit.
Have a great week.
