Stay Healthy!
Exercise this past week has mostly consisted of harvesting seaweed from the mudflats and hauling it up the hill to the lasagna garden in a wheelbarrow. I still have about 5 more trips back and forth before I get this next layer finished, but I’m getting there, slowly but surely.

Keep My Husband Busy
The HH spent most of his extra time this past week playing with the wood chipper and mowing. And when he wasn’t paying attention, I added on a new 5’x12′ section to the lasagna garden. I’m calling it the “pepper” section.
Now all I need is a “corn” and “squash” section and I should be ready to go for next year’s gardening season. 🙂
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2021

Things We’d Like to Buy
The new clothesline arrived yesterday but seeing how a hurricane {although it never seems to be a hurricane by the time it reaches us} is on the horizon, we are going to hold off on installing it for a few days. Better to be safe than sorry I suppose.
A dinghyClothesline- Archery Set {every camp should have archery!

Unplug As Much As Possible {but still keep the blog, FB and Instagram}
This past week was pretty low tech. I didn’t even watch a single movie. I did read every page of a local paper though so that was pretty exciting. When was the last time you read a newspaper?

My House Projects For This Year
My current home project is preparing for winter. 🙂 And that means stocking up on everything I think we might need in case there is a major blizzard {or something like that}. This past week I canned 2 batches of Savory Tomato Jam and a double batch of Zucchini Relish {it goes great on weenies and tossed in with chicken or tuna salad.
And in case you’re wondering, I used Weck canning jars this time around. I prefer the quality of the Weck jars to Ball as the glass is much thicker and I have found that in the long run, they are a better investment.

My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish
I am still working on my bulb order from Van Engelen. I think I’m close though and now I just have to decide on my indoor bulbs. I had hoped to have a bunch of birdhouses installed in the field this year, but since I decided to put a lasagna garden there instead, we are going to have to install them somewhere else.
The HH hasn’t built any of them yet, but that’s okay, there will be plenty of time this winter.
Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}Start a lasagna garden- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
- Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border {fall project}
- Clean up and prune the area that faces the road {working on it}
Install a vegetable garden{Done}Install a sunflower patch{decided for a row along the side of the barn instead}- Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall {Why 2,500? It seemed like a good number to start with}
Reach 10,000 Sales on Etsy {as of this morning I’ve made 8122 sales on Etsy}. Only 1878 to go!
My kitchen table is currently stacked with wool! Hopefully by the end of the day I’ll have it listed on Etsy. 🙂

Are tulips annuals or perennials?
Elle says
Tulips are perennial bulbs. They should be dug up every 3-4 years and replanted as each bulb duplicates and when crowded the blooms are not what they could be. Mom made me dig hers up every year after the leaves browned. (This feeds the bulb and creates healthier bulbs). We stored them in a cool place then replanted in fall after first frost. (Can you tell I’m 100% Dutch girl immigrant? LOL). Yes, that is what the Dutch do.

We were finally able to trap one of the two stray cats that live in our yard and take her to a vet clinic. I’m not thrilled with the clinic, but our regular vet wasn’t available, so I suppose that’s good enough for now. I have no idea how we’ll catch the other cat though–I have never seen such a stubborn animal. She actually sat on top of the trap to mock us instead of going in it.
I’m not exactly planning ahead for winter, but I think I’m up to about 20 freezer meals in the past 3 weeks. That pace seems really slow to me, but I’m not used to freezing as I go and while already being back at work, so it’s probably about right. I’m currently in the whirlwind of back to school, but once that finally gets going, I might be able to pick up the pace on freezer meals and then coast the rest of the semester. Chili, soup, and pasta sauces are my top priority, but I also froze quesadilla filling and egg roll filling.
Mavis Butterfield says
20 freezer meals is a good start Mel! And way to go with cat #1.
Rebecca in MD says
Congratulations on capturing one of the cats! As a cat owner I can confirm that indeed the second one is mocking you………..but she is enjoying your attention.
Ruth says
Mel –
Try canned mackerel as bait for trapping a stubborn cat. Also cover the trap with an old blanket. Wear disposable gloves and be prepared to toss the blanket if it gets the bait on it. Stinky! But it helped me trap about 15 ferals (who all were adopted). Lots of good trapping advice on YouTube. Good luck!
Mel says
Oh, believe me, we’ve tried all that and more. We even tried a remote controlled drop trap. She’s just very stubborn.
Rosemary Calhoun says
In January 2021, I decided on some yearly goals. In March 2021, I got custody of my teenage granddaughter and tossed the yearly goals. I tried to do monthly goals, but I found myself putting things off for about 29 days . . . ha ha ha. I have discovered that weekly goals are best for me. I actually did ALL my weekly goals for 8/16 thru 8/22!!
My To-Do List or 8/23 – 8/29:
1) Clean ceiling fans and lights
2) Make freezer fudge
3) Change air filters for central air unit
4) Don’t forget doctor appointment
5) Get granddaughter to bus stop on time & pick up on time
6) Laundry
7) Grocery shopping
8) Finish doll blanket and dish towels for Etsy shop
9) Take photos of finished items and list them
10) Scan photos (to create future photo book)
11) Work on losing a few more pounds . . .
12) Take granddaughter to counseling session
13) If time (and energy) allows, clean something that may have been neglected . . .
14) Remind Hubby to get oil change for car
Nanci Fitschen says
Do you give out the recipe for freezer fudge? That sounds interesting.
Rosemary Calhoun says
I use this recipe – it keeps very well in the freezer:
Keto Fudge
Ingredients:
• 4 Tbsp of peanut butter (try to get natural or no sugar added, almond butter also works)
• 2 Tbsp coconut oil
• 2 Tbsp butter
• 1 Tbsp of cocoa powder (no sugar added)
• 1 oz of cream cheese
• Non-sugar sweetener to taste. The equivalent of three teaspoons of sugar work swell if you like dark chocolate. 4 teaspoons if you like sweeter.
• Optional: You can add vanilla extract, dark chocolate shavings, walnuts, peanuts, mint or strawberry flavoring, etc. to customize your fudge.
Directions:
1. Put all ingredients into a microwave safe bowl. Microwave for thirty seconds.
2. Remove from the microwave and stir for about ten seconds. Place back in the microwave for 30 seconds.
3. Remove from microwave, stir, and then pour into a greased pan (I use Pam to spray the pan). I recommend an 8 inch by 8 inch pan or smaller.
4. Place in freezer. I recommend cutting the fudge into pieces after a half hour. If fully frozen, it is a bit more difficult to cut.
I hope you like it!
Nanci Fitschen says
Thank you so much. I’m going to try it when it gets a little cooler. Having feels like weather in the 90’s today in MN.

Just a fewvsuggestions for your Blizzard Prep – we found that when we lost our electricity for nine days last winter the following were our favorites …. a small generator, an aux charging battery for the phone, down comforters, the chemex coffee maker, a dutch oven, several coolers, plenty of dry firewood and battery candles on timers (especially for the bathrooms at night),
The most important for us, but hardest to get if you don’t have them – a wood burning fireplace, a gas stove and gas hot water heaters.
Margo says
Gardening has slowed for now as we are getting to the height of the hot season, but planning the winter garden is on the agenda for this week. Bought my seeds, now to figure out where I’m planting them. Still harvesting a few tomatoes and herbs. Need to dry more thyme today. Good day to work on a quilt that I’ve been putting off finishing for some time. Big goal is to redo the rose garden in the front of our house later next month. Some of our older roses have termites! Who knew roses could get termites!?
Gail says
Mel, What is your recipe for quesadilla filling? Thanks.
Mel says
I use this one, but I’m sure you could freeze just about any quesadilla fillings.
https://www.budgetbytes.com/hearty-black-bean-quesadillas/
It’s actually really fast to throw together, but I’m just lazy enough to prefer to have it already mixed up and frozen.
KATHY HORT says
Mel, lazy is NOT a word I would use to describe you! I enjoy reading your comments and posts almost as much as I enjoy Mavis’s 🙂
Gail says
Thanks Mel. This looks good! I’m going to try it. May also try a version adding some canned chicken (Mavis’s favorite) before freezing.
Tanya says
Mavis I thought of you yesterday! I’m in PA visiting family and stopped at an Amish farm market because the sign said “baked goods.” I bought 2 dozen big cookies, a loaf of absolutely divine breakfast bread, 4 big whoopie pies in different flavors, 6 cinnamon rolls, a medium sized shoe fly pie, and a pint of blackberries all for $29! The pie was only $5.75 and was absolutely delicious. We enjoyed the bread so much we went back to get a bigger loaf and they were sold out. They are only open Friday and Saturday so we may stop back on Friday morning to get a loaf on our way to the airport 🙂
