Stay Healthy!
Lucy and I got our vitamin D this past week collecting seaweed on the shore and out on the water checking for loose buoys and watching the seagulls and loons.

Keep My Husband Busy
Project clothesline is done… now what? The prices for wood are still sky high so I think we may wait until next spring to build a new set of steps down to the water. Also, fall {and freezing temps} are just around the corner so I suppose we’d better use the next 6 weeks to work on clearing the rest of the property of the overgrown areas and making mulch.
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2021
- Build a new set of stairs down to the water. The old set… it’s not exactly useable.
Build a firepit near the edge of the property.{DONE!}Build a picnic table near the birch trees for summer lunches{Done!}Build 4 or 6 garden boxes for his little lady{we did raised beds this year instead}}- Build a boatload of birdhouses for the {soon to be} bird sanctuary

A dinghyClothesline- Archery Set {every camp should have archery!}
Kitchen table and chairsSideboardBench for the entryway- A full size washer and dryer set {the house came with a small stackable w/d set}
Deck chairs and a patio table set{Going the picnic table route instead}A set of 4 Adirondack chairs for the fire pit area{I LOVE these chairs!}BBQ{He bought a Blackstone Griddle instead!}2 More Kayaks
Unplug As Much As Possible {but still keep the blog, FB and Instagram}
Unplugging this week included visiting our old neighbors {Kiln Guy and the Chef} at their new place {they moved to the water as well} and stealing all the acorns out of their yard.
Remember his glass kiln? Check out his latest project. I told him he needs to make some ornaments {or nightlights, or sun catchers} and sell them on Etsy!!

My House Projects For This Year
Cooler temps are FINALLY back on the horizon which means I can get back to painting the outside of the house. I pretty much melt at anything over 75 these days so it will be nice to finish up the painting outside.
After that, mid September through early October will be all about finishing up garden chores: the lasagna garden, clearing up the rest of the brush, prepping the garden for winter and planting flower bulbs.
- Figure out new window treatments for the back of the house
- Come up with a game plan for the kitchen remodel {for 2022}
Paint the family room walls and trim{DONE!}Paint the entryway trim and doors{DONE!}Paint the dining room walls and trim{DONE!}Paint the master bedroom walls and trim{DONE!}Paint the barnand add a new fixturePaint the hallway bathroom{DONE!}
My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish
I am still working on my bulb order from Van Engelen. I’m having a hard time deciding if I want to edge the walkway to the front door with mini daffodils or tulips. I’m leaning towards the delicate daffodils though as they would pop up sooner than tulips.
The HH hasn’t built any of them yet, but that’s okay, there will be plenty of time this winter.
Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}Start a lasagna garden- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
- Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border {fall project}
- Clean up and prune the area that faces the road {working on it}
Install a vegetable garden{Done}Install a sunflower patch{decided for a row along the side of the barn instead}- Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall {Why 2,500? It seemed like a good number to start with}

Curious minds want to know….what are your plans with the acorns?
Mel says
You could always do snowdrops along the walkway. I think they’re supposed to be even earlier than daffodils. They might be too tiny on their own, but mixed with mini daffodils (especially since daffodil foliage pops up long before they flower) might work.
My focus lately has been on getting ready for school to start (it starts tomorrow), and I think I’m finally set. At work I completed mountains of paperwork and set up all the student spaces (well, the ones I’m in charge of) with HEPA filters, humidifiers, etc. to try to further minimize the chances of people getting sick. I also did all the miscellaneous tasks it takes to transition the kids back to in-person school after 18 months of remote learning. On the home front, I got the house clean yesterday (and ready to decorate for fall since I am very much done with summer), am up to 30 freezer meals made (more to come this week), and made whole wheat carrot zucchini muffins for easy breakfast this week. I think all I need to do today is fold laundry and maybe clean the oven.
Joely says
Wow. I wish I had your organizational skills. Impressive. You’ve given me motivation to get more done today. Thank you!
Mel says
I’m glad I could help! We’ve had a very rough year, so things were kind of a mess, and I’m only just now getting back on top of everything. But the cost of disorganization is much higher for me during the school year, so I’ve really kicked it into gear lately.
Cee says
I’m so sorry you have had a hard year. I love reading your comments. You are as inspiring as Mavis with the sharing of your goals, what you accomplish, your freezer cooking, sewing, crafting and gardening knowledge and tips I hope you have a great upcoming year.
joely says
Yes, thank you Mel.
Tracy L. says
Agreed. BIG THANK YOU TO YOU MEL.
Mel says
Thanks, everyone! I hope next year is a good year for all of us.

I vote mini daffodils. My tulips don’t last long and are somewhat unpredictable with weather swings.
I’m always impressed by your “yearly list of to do’s”. You get so much done. Amazes me.
Thanks for sharing:)

Hi Mavis
I loved the book, “Four Winds” that you read. It was fabulous. I just finished “The Other Einstein” and it was wonderful if you are looking for book recommendations.
I also read “Destiny of the Republic” about Pres James Garfield’s assassination. You learn about the saying “Ignorance is Bliss” in the book.
My goal is to read 18 books and I have 7 more to go! ❤️

I just have to ask, did you look closely at the artwork on your cookbook? What is going on there? Hahaha!

One of your earlier posts about the washer/dryer reminded me of how very loud our front load washer had become (worn bearings?). We had to yell to each other in the living room when the washer was spinning. So we started looking and this weekend found a great used top load washer with matching dryer for under $700. The great part is that the gentleman that was selling them takes apart, cleans and rebuilds Whirlpool washer/dryers and sells them. He was a lovely gentleman and when we installed them last night – what a joy – they’re quiet and huge. Good luck with your hunt.
Elisabeth says
Love the blog!
Two questions:
What are the acorns going to be used for (a forest?)?
and
What is the significance of the dates on your rug designs?
Call me inquiring!
Emily says
If you have deer in our area, go with the daffodils. Deer loved eating my tulips, but they let the daffodils thrive. We have much less land than you, but I added 175 bulbs last fall as my “pandemic” project, and they were such a joy this year.
