Stay Healthy!
The puggle princess and I spent some time out on the water this week kayaking around the cove. Let’s just say it’s a little harder to paddle when it’s windy out than when the water is smooth. 🙂 Lucy loves it though and hey… she didn’t dive in for any buoys this week so that’s a plus.

My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish
The bulbs have been ordered and so now we just need to start prepping the garden areas for planting. I’d say we have at least a month or so before the bulbs will go into the ground, but there are still a few areas that need to be cleared {mostly towards the road} before they’ll be ready for planting.
I also planted a row of beets at the back of the house. I may have planted them a little late, but at least they are in an area where I could toss a row cover over them if/when it gets too chilly.
Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}Start a lasagna garden- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
- Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border {fall project}
- Clean up and prune the area that faces the road {working on it}
Install a vegetable garden{Done}Install a sunflower patch{decided for a row along the side of the barn instead}- Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall {Why 2,500? It seemed like a good number to start with}
Reach 10,000 Sales on Etsy {as of this morning I’ve made 8301 sales on Etsy}. Only 1699 to go!
Yesterday I added a few new wool bundles to my Etsy shop, including this delicious bundle of perfect pumpkin wool. I just did the math on this goal and it looks like I will need to sell 15 items a day if I am going to hit the 10,00 sales goal I set for myself at the beginning of the year. Eeek!
Hopefully there are a lot of hookers out there that need wool, or everyone and their cousin wants to buy an ornament this year. Only time will tell.

You might want to rent/try out one of those long, narrow, flat sit-on-top competition/ocean kayaks and see how it compares. 🙂 We use them at our little lake and they’re fabulous — I personally feel they glide forward smoothly and quickly with less effort, and I’m not someone with good stamina. 😉

I made it through most of my to-do list yesterday, so all I have to do today is laundry, some housework, and Fall decorating. The only other goal I really have for this week is to find some pansy starts and maybe some more mums. After that, the house and garden should be set for Fall/winter, so I might turn my attention back to some of my original goals. Or I might just take it easy for a while.
I’ve tried Hasselback white potatoes but not sweet potatoes and actually found them a little overrated. I found it very hard to get the seasonings in between the slices, so carefully slicing it wasn’t really worth it because it was basically a baked potato with seasonings on the outside. It’s possible I did it wrong, but I think I prefer crash hot potatoes. But I haven’t tried a sweet potato version of that.
Jamie says
Oh no! It seems very early in the fall season for a bakery to be closed. Do you have another favorite one in the area that could be subed in for this goal? I love your posts on these purchases and it has inspired me to do something similar with our local bakery once a week.
We started winter prep last week and got cleaning the gutters off the list, started redoing the weather stripping on the older doors and windows, and reinforced our insulation in the walls and around the pipes in the exterior facing and unfinished utility room. We were able to do the gutters ourselves and save $200 because last week we hit our summer savings goal to buy a new extension ladder for the house. Once the gutters are done we will use the ladder to do trim painting and some small repair jobs.

95 degrees here yesterday and cooling off to a frosty 92 or so today. I have my seeds ready to go for my fall garden, but am only planting things that need some shade at this point. Won’t be planting my greens or beets till next month. Would love your gas prices, yesterday gas was $4.13 a gallon here. You’d think folks would be driving less, but nope, still as much road traffic as ever.
Connie says
I dont know if your husband is retired or works from home , but does he miss not having TV in winter ?
We are retired . I am more a homebody and stay busy.
Hubby stays busy too but does like tv in evenings. No local tv to pick up so must pay for tv in our location.
Mavis Butterfield says
Not really. We rent dvd’s from the library.
Marie says
I am thankful that our gas is only $2.65 where I live.

Two things I didn’t like when I was a kid growing up in Maine:
– the blue laws made it so everything was closed on Sunday. Has that relaxed?
– all the ice cream places were open from Memorial Day til Labor Day, so no soft serve or any take out ice cream the rest of the year.
Are the ice cream places still open?
Marie says
I was sure you were going to make your goal on weight this month. You didn’t mention pies very much so I was hoping for the best. You look fine to me after all what you weighed then was many moons ago and before having children.
Mary says
Only $3.28 a gallon for gas? That would be lovely. Here in the middle of British Columbia, we are paying around $1.50 a litre.. and it takes about 4 litres to make a US gallon…
Rhonda Relyea says
I love seeing Miss Lucy riding at the helm of the kayak! So much fun for you both and the exercise you’re getting in those rough waters with the wind!
Vivian says
Dang! Bad news about the bakeries closed for the season! We are going to be in Maine the week of Oct. 2nd and we’re hoping to try some of your recommendations. Our nephew lives in Rockland and he and our kids are going to hike in the park while the old folks stay in a b&b and enjoy the area.

I roasted some fingerling potatoes like that on Labor Day! They were really delicious. I finished dicing them out into little circles for a leek, ham, and potato soup the next day.
Mavis Butterfield says
I love the fingerlings…. they are so buttery. Hopefully I’ll be able to grow them next year.
