Keep My Husband Busy
The HH has been very busy trimming branches, clearing up brush and putting everything through the wood chipper lately. I told him we need to be out there at least 3 days a week if we are going to get everything done before the ground freezes and it’s just too cold to work outside anymore.
He just sort of grumbles…. š

My House Projects For This Year

My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish
The gardening projects are winding down and now all that’s left is to wait for the random bit of vegetables and winter squash to finish up, harvest and then clean up the garden beds.
We are also trying to get the area at the front of the property cleared and ready to plant all the those spring bulbs I ordered that should be here in early October.
But today, my big project is going to be canning applesauce out on the back deck. I’m not sure how many jars I’ll get, but I’m hoping for at least 2 dozen for warm applesauce on a winter’s day is just so good.
Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}Start a lasagna garden- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
- Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border {fall project}
- Clean up and prune the area that faces the road {working on it}
Install a vegetable garden{Done}Install a sunflower patch{decided for a row along the side of the barn instead}- Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall

I’m also processing apples today! I froze apple pies yesterday and am freezing applesauce scones and apple doughnuts today. I think I might freeze some apple muffins and maple apple pancake topping as well. We usually buy Stayman apples exclusively, but we discovered Crimson Crisp this year because we happened to be near the orchard a few weeks early, and I really love how well they work in baking.
One of my original goals for this year was to revitalize the herb garden, and I am really happy with how that turned out. A couple things didn’t make it (due to heavy rain, bugs, etc.), but overall the bed did really well, and I love the new setup. I used a “potscaping” approach, so there was almost no weeding, and I was able to just walk through and pull all the annual herbs that were winding down and toss in pansies, mums, and zinnias for Fall. In the spring/summer, I’ll pull those and swap in herbs again. We also attracted so many new pollinators.

One of my goals for the year is run a 5k, a 10k, a half, and a full marathon–inspired by a past goal of Mavis’s.
5k’s are no big deal–I ran a few this year.
My first 10k was a bit of a disappointment, time-wise, so I signed up for another (all virtual, BTW) to beat that time. Somehow I was slower….so “had to” run a third! Kicked butt! Prior to these races, I had never thought I could run more than 5 miles because my toes start to go numb–but I’ve since built up to 6 or 7 occasionally.
I “ran” (very. slow. jog.) the half at a large local park–I think I ran 5 or 6 giant laps around the whole park –in May. I’ve never run more than 7 miles before–and I really didn’t train at all for the half. I was just happy that I kept jogging and never stopped to walk–even though the last 3 miles was a slow piddle jog….
My plan for the full is at a smaller and closer park–today I completed the math while getting 5 miles in. I will need to run a little more than 17 laps. I’m shooting for October 22 because: won’t be in the 90’s anymore; have that Friday off school; still football season, so dogs aren’t allowed at the park; I will have entire weekend to recover. It took me 4 hours and 7 minutes to complete the half marathon. I am shooting for 8 hours for the marathon, which will be a big accomplishment because I plan to include my breaks, whereas I didn’t for the half. Hoping I can run the whole thing, but allowing myself grace to walk if needed.

I know you’ve posted it before, but can you post about your outdoor canning stove and pots? I would do more canning if I could do it outdoors.
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Tonya,
We have the Camp Chef cookstove link: https://amzn.to/2Z3fknG and I LOVE it!!! It makes canning so much more enjoyable to be able to do everything outside. I use both enamelware pots and lobster pots depending on the size of the jars I’m canning.
Susan in SoCal says
I have both the polka dot reindeer and the candy cane ornaments you have pictured today and I have to say they’re beautiful. Not on the tiny side for sure. I love them. They are true quality ornaments.
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks Susan. š
