Stay Healthy!
I made a salad last week but I was so excited about my indoor lettuce, I forgot to take a picture of the actual salad I made. And it was a total beauty too. Oh well, maybe next time.
Gardening has been on my mind lately, mostly because I’ve been thinking about the people who were around 200-300 years ago and how hard it must have been during the winter months food wise {among other things}. I mean really, the sheer amount of food they would’ve had to put away and preserve must have been constantly on their minds.
Especially if they had a large family!

Keep My Husband Busy
The boat is in the little barn, the snow sticks are in the ground, the faucet covers are on, the snow blower has been tuned up and is ready to go…. now all we need is SNOW…. and to get the floating dock up out of the water. 😉
C’mon husband… hop to it!
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2021
This year’s honey do list:
- Build a new set of stairs down to the water. The old set… it’s not exactly useable.
Build a firepit near the edge of the property.{DONE!}Build a picnic table near the birch trees for summer lunches{Done!}Build 4 or 6 garden boxes for his little lady{we did raised beds this year instead}}- Build a boatload of birdhouses for the {soon to be} bird sanctuary
Create a garden path/walkway for the front garden{DONE!}Remodel the bathroom in the hallway{DONE!}- Install some sort of driveway border
- Install a workspace for me in the basement for dying wool
Install a fence in the front for Lucy{DONE!}Build a set of 3 bookshelves in the dining room for me{DONE!}Install a trailer hitch on the car{DONE!}
Things We’d Like to Buy
The best purchase this year I think has been those white Adirondack chairs from LL Bean. Not only do I love sitting in them, but I also like looking out the window and seeing them all around the fire pit. They’re so welcoming!
Now, if we could only get those floors refinished….
A dinghyClothesline- Archery Set {every camp should have archery!}
Kitchen table and chairsSideboardBench for the entryway- A full size washer and dryer set {the house came with a small stackable w/d set}
Deck chairs and a patio table set{Going the picnic table route instead}A set of 4 Adirondack chairs for the fire pit area{I LOVE these chairs!}BBQ{He bought a Blackstone Griddle instead!}2 More Kayaks
Unplug As Much As Possible {but still keep the blog, FB and Instagram}
Instead of paying $11 for a movie ticket or a monthly subscription to something…. we invested in a 50 pound bag of cracked corn for winter. Yep. Because seriously, that’s what you do when you live in the boonies on what is basically a wildlife preserve and you have a flock of 2 dozen turkeys that come to visit you everyday.
- Goodbye Facebook {Done!}
- Goodbye Amazon Prime {Done!} $119 a year

I started watching Foyle’s War yesterday and so far so good. I was able to watch a few episodes of the series a few years ago but never got to watch the whole thing.
So I made a request at the library and would you believe they bought the whole dvd set {8 seasons!}? How cool is that. The episodes are pretty long {100 minutes} and there are 29 episodes so I’ll probably be watching this through the end of the year.

I really enjoyed Foyle’s War. I watched the entire series. It was really nice of your library to buy the set. The characters are well developed. My favorite episode was later in the series. It was well into wartime rations and there was raffle for some type of vegetable (I can’t remember if it was a carrot or turnip). The excitement of everyone hoping to win that vegetable. (And, there was only one). Enjoy!
Susan says
Foyle’s War is sneaky. At first, it seems just sort of interesting and gentle, and suddenly … you’re hooked! Super engaging and fascinating to weave the “homefront” perspective of wartime. I very much enjoyed the series, too!
Tracey says
Love your made in Maine suggestions. May I share one that is always a hit with the men in my life?

Their front pocket wallet changed the trajectory of my husbands aching back.
Have a lovely thanksgiving everyone! I really enjoy the community you’ve created for us, Mavis. ❤️

I agonize over window coverings for so long that it actually took me 5 years to get anything on my kitchen windows. Your Roman shade tutorial inspired me to make Roman shades out of burlap and I couldn’t be happier with them! I did modify a little and made unstructured ones so the stick wouldn’t show through the burlap but yours were definitely my starting point.
Laura says
Wondering why you still haven’t procured your archery set?
suzanne says
What about simple woven bamboo roman shades. They’re classic, affordable and come in hundreds of colors. You can have them lined or diy. I mount them outside the window frame and higher as I don’t want the stacked hang cutting into the window opening.

Fwiw, Hulu Live is going up to $69.99, but will now include Disney+ and ESPN+. This is pretty expensive, but as it’s the only entertainment we pay for – one son pays for Netflix and Prime and the other son is a Sports Communications major and dh is a diehard UGA fan, it’s a necessary evil.
Barbara Dougherty says
Ummm, Florida girl here. I think I know what the snow sticks are for….but then again maybe not.
Would love to know.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Thanks
Bobbi
Gigi says
It’s so the snow plows know where the edge of the road is. Usually on corners or bends.
GrannyB says
Also so you know where your driveway is after the snowplow goes by. Of course Mavis will be snuggled inside with a cup of hot chocolate, but the HH could be gone on on a run for almond milk, rice, or who knows what and will need to be able to find the driveway once he returns!! 🙂
Holly Sieger says
Texas girl here wondering the same thing:)
LindaT says
We put ours around the gardens so the snowblower knows where they are in the snow
Amanda says
That’s so awesome of your library to buy the set! My library has never turned down a,purchase request I’ve made. The head librarian told me they have an allotted about of money per month and if there are no patron requests they have to use it anyway. They prefer to provide the community with what they desire. Libraries are terrific!
Amanda says
I apologize for the typos. As excuse, my phone just finished an update and I am 40 now so change flummoxes me.

I keep meaning to give you a Maine made business to check out. Elves and Angels. It’s a very small family owned business that makes beautiful, heirloom quality, wooden pieces for kids- doll houses, play kitchens, shelves, and more. I know it’s not something relevant to your stage of life but wanted to pass it along.
Mary says
We enjoyed Foyles War especially the earlier seasons. We have Hulu plus and it is going up to 69.99 as someone mentioned above. It is the only thing we have and my husband loves sports and I love the cooking shows. We were disappointed in the rate increase.
Jennifer says
We were the same way, but we had DirecTV for years and it was much higher. Our son can watch it when he goes back to school and dh keeps his TV on SEC Network all day long and as he’s disabled, I’ll keep it because it makes him happy.
I googled snow sticks because I thought it was a measuring stick!!
Surovec, Samantha says
I was thinking of you and your love for all things Maine today when my husband and I drove past an all things Maine fresh seafood, etc and cafe in central PA( of all places). Just wondered how far you can drive fish on ice from the Maine coast and have it still be considered fresh?
Candy says
A Maine book for you, We Took to the Woods by Louise Dickinson Rich. She’s written several but this is my favorite and one I reread every winter.
Kate says
I read this earlier this year due to a reader suggestion. I enjoyed every minute of it! It’s worth tracking down!
Jules says
Doyle’s War is my all time favorite. I’ve had it on my Christmas list for years.
Marcia says
I am currently reading mysteries (series originally started in the 1990s) set in Alaska.
Kate Shugak series by Dana Stabenow.
It’s pretty amazing, and definitely goes into the amount of food they have to “put up” for winter, like hunting caribou and moose and putting them in an outdoor “cache” (safe from bears and wolves) and having root cellars for carrots, onions, and potatoes.
Also, picking various wild berries for the cache, and canning items also.
Amy W says
For Black Friday, basic Hulu (with commercials) will be only $.99/month! Not too shabby! 🙂
