Keep My Husband Busy
You know you’re getting old when the highlight of your day is standing around the advent calendar together in anticipation of what’s behind the little door. 🙂
It was a slow week. It snowed, but it didn’t stay around long enough to shovel. The HH was going to build birdhouses, but said he’d rather wait for a warmer day {today}. He did haul in firewood and mail my packages for me, so there was that… but I didn’t really have any big projects to assign him this week.
Husbands… you’ve got to keep them busy or they’ll start watching cat videos and calling you into the room to watch them.
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2021
This year’s honey do list:
- Build a new set of stairs down to the water. The old set… it’s not exactly useable.
- Pull up floating dock and ramp
Build a firepit near the edge of the property.{DONE!}Build a picnic table near the birch trees for summer lunches{Done!}Build 4 or 6 garden boxes for his little lady{we did raised beds this year instead}}- Build a boatload of birdhouses for the {soon to be} bird sanctuary
Create a garden path/walkway for the front garden{DONE!}Remodel the bathroom in the hallway{DONE!}- Install some sort of driveway border
- Install a workspace for me in the basement for dying wool
Install a fence in the front for Lucy{DONE!}Build a set of 3 bookshelves in the dining room for me{DONE!}Install a trailer hitch on the car{DONE!}
Things We’d Like to Buy
The HH bought a second fan for the woodstove and it has made a big difference in pushing the warm air throughout the house.
A dinghyClothesline- Archery Set {every camp should have archery!}
Kitchen table and chairsSideboardBench for the entryway- A full size washer and dryer set {the house came with a small stackable w/d set}
Deck chairs and a patio table set{Going the picnic table route instead}A set of 4 Adirondack chairs for the fire pit area{I LOVE these chairs!}BBQ{He bought a Blackstone Griddle instead!}2 More Kayaks
Unplug As Much As Possible {but still keep the blog, FB and Instagram}
This week I transferred all my little paper dye packets into 4 ounce glass spice jars to make my life a little easier. I have been rug hooking {and dyeing wool for over 20 years} and I have no idea why it didn’t occur to me to do it sooner.

Down to 962!!! I did it!
I have no idea why I was hanging onto this picture rainbow chard growing my {3 houses ago} garden. Maybe it was because I miss growing it for the chickens? Also, LOOK at the soil. Isn’t it beautiful?
Clean Out My Closet
I didn’t get rid of anything in my closet this past week but I was researching some base layer wool pants {TOTALLY NOT TODDLER PANTS because they would be worn under jeans!} and was creeped out by the “size recommendation” by Amazon.
For several reasons. #1 being that I have never purchased a pair of pants/shorts from them.
I rarely buy anything from Amazon these days and when I do it’s for things like boxes or ribbon that I absolutely cannot get at a comparable price anywhere else.
My House Projects For This Year
I don’t think I want the plate rack after all. I think I like the idea of a plate rack but the little scuff marks on the white wood from the plates going in and out all the time would make me a little crazy.
- Figure out new window treatments for the back of the house
- Come up with a game plan for the kitchen remodel {for 2022} {working on it!}

My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish

Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}Start a lasagna garden- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border{Done}Clean up and prune the area that faces the road{Done}Install a vegetable garden{Done}Install a sunflower patch{decided for a row along the side of the barn instead}Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall{Done}
Reach 10,000 Sales on Etsy {as of this morning I’ve made 9255 sales on Etsy}.
Only 745 to go!
It was another good week in the shipping department and I am slowly but surely inching closer towards my goal each day. Here’s hoping there will be a lot of last minute shoppers wanting wool, ornaments and garden markers.
I also listed a few wool bundles and hearts on Etsy last night.

Have a great one,
~Mavis
Kim says
I’ve always wondered how you keep your legs warm wearing jeans. Jeans are NOT warm, in my opinion. Would the wool be itchy? Have you tried fleece lined leggings under jeans?
That plate rack is pretty but it takes up a lot of wall space.
Mavis Butterfield says
No, the merino wool pants are not itchy at all {my husband has a pair and loves them}. I’m not a huge fan of fleece as I tend to overheat when I wear it.
Mel says
I used to wear regular leggings under jeans in winter. Really any extra layer helps, but it’s not always the most comfortable depending on the cut of the jeans. But I’m ALWAYS between sizes in things like jeans, so they don’t fit me well to start, and I often have to stick with just leggings instead. The leggings are typically warm enough on their own though.
I think I’m closing out my goals for 2021. I got through the garden ones, the organization ones, the health ones, and some of the house ones, but I had to skip the rest (things like painting and some fun stuff) due to the year we had. I have some big goals planned for 2022 that I’m looking forward to sharing though.
Jeanine says
Have you tried Pro Chem Wool dyes? I have Pro Chem and Cushing Dyes. I keep the Cushing dyes in an old Cassette holder in alphabetical order. The Pro Chemical dyes come in a jar, so I just write the color on the jar lid. I keep all my dyes in a drawer so it’s easy to see what I need.
I like the idea of the plate rack, but it would be a drag to keep clean. And lastly, I love the wood stove fans. And how’s the firewood holding up?
Have a great day! I plan on rug braiding a special order and watch the rain today.
Bettina says
Good morning Mavis! I have a question for you. Can you freeze lunch meat? Like you, we are empty nesters and we are not getting through all of a pack of lunch meat before it goes bad. If we could break it in half and freeze it, that would be a huge money saver.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes we do that! I use freezer bags when I do. 🙂
Toni Wood says
Yes you can freeze lunch meat. We’re a military family and when living overseas all our “fresh” meat and processed meats came in frozen. It taste just fine. We’re now empty nesters and often freeze half a package.
Bettina says
Thank you!
Alice says
I think your husband should adopt a kitten so that he has all the real life adventures! We did that in 2020 and so did my parents! That little kitten has done wonders for my parents and they love that little cat dearly. My son just adopted the little sister of my parent’s cat and he enjoys that little kitten and the kitten just loves him.
Jody says
I wear silk long john’s under my jeans in the winter (wet Pacific Northwest) and they make a huge difference. Plus, they’re very light weight.
Janis says
Mavis, When it gets really cold here….I wear cuddle duds under my jeans. They are sort of silky but wash really well.
Bettina, I have frozen deli meat several to times and no one could tell a difference.
Michelle Mack says
Dyce Head Lighthouse, my husband lived in the house next to it. He used to throw GI Joe off the lighthouse with it’s parachute. Penobscot bay has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Nancy D says
Haha that’s hilarious! Thanks for sharing!
Marlene Wurtzbacher says
I just finished reading A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline, as an E book from my local library. It is fiction but based on Andrew Wyatt meeting Christina Olsen and the relation he had with her and her family while using their house to paint in. I highly recommend it! Now I am obsessed with finding out more about Andrew Wyatt and also hope to visit the Olsen house in Cushing, ME one day.
Katherine says
Check out https://www.32degrees.com
They have 3 different weights of base layers for women. I have been very happy with my purchases, both for cold and hot weather.
Laura says
I bought the 32 degrees long johns from Costco. Tops and bottoms. I just came back from Europe where it was really cold. These worked great. They’re very thin and silky. They really kept me warm.
Richelle says
I have base layer tops from Cuddleduds and 32°. Just got a pair of Meriwool Base Layer 100% Merino Wool Thermal Pants from Amazon ( $60) in a mens small. I tried several sizes, men’s and women’s, but ended up keeping the men’s small because they have a higher waist (the womens small hit below my bellybutton and felt like they would slide down). They’re the best for the price I’ve seen. I also have fleece leggings and fleece lined pants, both of which have been great for working from home in the winter months.
Melinda says
Your Christina’s World book reminded me of a novel I read a few years ago by Christina Baker Kline, A Piece of the World, which was based on the painting. I really enjoyed it.
Jim Doolittle says
Hi Mavis,
Sue and I tried the “Copycat Panera Cream of Chicken and Wild Rice Soup” recipe on that chilly blustery day we had last week. It was TREMENDOUS, absolutely the best I’ve had ever.
The only issue was only one helping each :)! It will be on the list for Christmas week though. We hope you guys are doing well!
Mavis Butterfield says
That soup is SO GOOD, especially on a cold day. Wishing you two all the best. 🙂
Christie says
You and the HH should add a cat to your household! 🙂 They are fun and very entertaining!
Sue says
I bought one of these stovetop fans from your link a few days ago and today I opened the box and set it straight on the woodstove. I love it! I had a similar fan (different brand) years ago that wouldn’t turn the blades unless the fire was super hot, and I rarely run that hot a stove. Your version started turning as soon as the stove got warm, and when I went out for several hours and came back home to just a few embers left in the stove, the fan blades were still turning! Thanks so much for recommending it!
Mavis Butterfield says
We love ours so much, the we now have 2!! Glad you like it Sue.
