1. Get Organized.
So maybe this sounds weird, but other than a few boxes in an upstairs closet and the mess in the garage, {that I cannot control} I really don’t have anything left to organize. Weird, Huh? Getting rid of a few things each week and donating them to the thrift store has been crazy helpful.
2. Run, walk or crawl a Marathon, half marathon, 10k, and 5k race this year.
I’ve been thinking about this particular goal quite a bit lately and trying to decide if I really want to go through will all those races. Not because they would be difficult {because HELLO, I’ve been known to sign up for a marathon the night before the actual race} but because of the monetary expenses involved. I’m just not sure I want to spend $200-$300 this year on races when we’ve got so much else going on. We’ll see.
3. Remodel our Master Bathroom, Master Closet and Monkey Boy’s Bathroom.
Cameron is here today working on the bathroom again. I have no idea what he’s doing, but he’s sure nice to look at. 😉
4. Finish Every Room in Our House.
5. Turn Spare Bedroom into a Cozy Home Office Space for myself.
6. Create a Vegetable Garden.
Yesterday I spent the morning transplanting cabbage seedlings to the back garden. With a little luck, I should be harvesting a boatload of cabbage in late July. Unless of course the HOA sees it and then, well who knows.
7. Build a Path into the Hillside for Easy Access to the Upper Garden.
8. Limit my personal spending to $100 a month.
Last week I spent $ shopping at the thrift stores and this week I gave in to my sweet tooth a bought a giant tub of Red Vines for $8.69. So far in March I have spent $42.44.
- In February I Spent $32.52
- In January I Spent $84.33
9. Purge… Weekly. Find 10 things each week to donate to the thrift store. Hats, fairy wings, sandals, St. Patrick’s Day stuff and a lab coat all made their way to my Goodwill donation bag this week.
10. Read 1 book a week. – My goal is to read 52 books this year
I just noticed I forgot to write up a post on the books I’m planning to read in March. Originally I there were 4 books I was going to try and get through in March. But since this is going to be a crazy month with the remodel and gardening projects, I know I probably won’t be able to read all four books. So I’ll wait and do my book post next month instead. The first book on my list though is Wild by Cheryl Strayed. Have you read it? The reviews are really good.
11. Slow Down.
After a couple of weeks working on smaller primitive hooked rugs I’m back to working on my larger entry way sized rug. This one is going to take a while because of it’s size but I’m hoping to finish it by the end of the year.
12. Canning
I sampled some of the most delicious orange carrot marmalade from Stonewall Kitchen while I was back east last week and I’m going to try and duplicate it at some point this summer because it was just that awesome. Stay tuned!

I have read _Wild_ and enjoyed it. I saw the movie, too, but preferred the book. Let us know what you think!
You might also enjoy _A Walk In The Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail_, by Bill Bryson.

LOVED Wild Also loved, loved, loved A Walk in the Woods. That is one of my favorite books! Parts of that book are so funny, you will have tears streaming down your face as you read it! Walking the Appalachian Trail is on my bucket list – even though I’ll have to do it in bits and pieces. I also enjoyed A Walk for Sunshine which was also a trail journal.
You know, maybe instead of doing all of those races, you could just add up all the miles you’d cover in those events, and either do the equivalent in 5Ks or 10Ks OR just walk or run the equivalent on your own… Maybe you could even plan several group fun runs to take place in your neighborhood! 🙂 Wonder if there are covenant restrictions on group runs?

Regarding Goal #6. Imagine the look of the “Drive by Committee” when they see your post “setting-up-a-vegetable-stand-in-your-driveway” (sorry I couldn’t find the link).

Maybe I can butter them up with fresh produce? Probably wishful thinking.

You are doing very well on your goals and very impressed. I have read Wild and loved it. so much that I dream of hiking at least some of that trail. I have made an Orange carrot Marmalade before and it to was yummy. You’ll have no problem making it.

You can run your races unofficially and still meet your goal. My husband and I like to do 5Ks, but the fees get oppressive. So we will sometimes just gather at the park with a couple friends and run our own 5K. It’s not quite the same experience as a public race, but it meets your goals and saves money at the same time.

Wild is a beautifully written, emotionally moving memoir. It is sometimes painful to read but that discomfort makes the book more rewarding. Cheryl Strayed visited my town to speak to a literary group. She flew in early and spent HER day teaching a writing clinic to incarcerated teens. She is one amazing lady. Enjoy the book!

Don’t give up the run/walk/crawl goal! Set dates for these events and use MapMyRun to map out your own course and do it for free! I’ll even mail you a race bib and medal!!
Yes, loved Wild! Listened to it on Audiobooks while training for Portland Marathon. Very inspirational. Do it Mavis!

I am curious as to the dimensions of your entry way rug. It’s certainly going to be gorgeous!
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Vicki, it’s about 25×40. 🙂

I think it would be gloriously delicious fun to organize, plan, and participate in…The Pink Flamingo 5k! Everyone must dress as a flamingo and donate one pink flamingo for yard art. I’m sure the race route would go right by all those Nosey Neighbors yards.
